Riding the Stairs

I'm trying to figure out people's fascination with escalators.

My desk faces the bottom of the escalator in the store I work in and I see people doing all sorts of things on them.  A few weeks ago, there was a young, unspupervised boy who rode up and down for a good 30 minutes; each time he would strike a different pose as he went up or down.  Even his fascination, at that young age, made more sense than the teenagers, though.  When school's out, I always know because I have abunch of teens just riding up and down the escalators, talking and obviously having a great time going absolutely nowhere.

So what gives?  What is it about riding up and down, always ending in the same place with no thrills or variations in between that is so dang entertaining?  I thought teens had no attention span because of video games.  Am I just old now?  I won't even go into the grown folks that are scared to get on and freak out at the top.

    DED!

A few years ago, I was with H and my parents at an aquarium. at the very end of the exhibits, you take an escalator back down to the street level to leave. They are very narrow escalators - only wide enough for one person. As we were walking over to go down,  we see this kid (about 3-4yo) trying to run up the down escalator. his parents are saying nothing to him / making no attempt to stop him. i comment (loudly) that i can't believe someone would just let their kid play on the escalator - he could get hurt. no sooner do i say this than the kid does a faceplant, and falls down about 3 or 4 stairs. i start cracking up laughing (as does the rest of my family). kid is not seriously injured, just shaken up. the parents give me dirty looks and make some comment about the "mean lady" making fun of their kid.

You know I watch that show, I Survived. One of the events that someone survived was an escalator at a ballpark failing and people got chewed up, burnt, maimed......those things are not to be taken lightly. Granted, that was a massive mechanical failure, but it underscores how dangerous they are -- like farm equipment.

These are the same kind of people who hit the floor and yell at it when their kid falls while learning how to walk.  True story, a former friend of mine was watching her son while he was just learning to watch, he falls and starts crying so she walks over, hits the ground and says "Bad ground, you hurt my baby!"  I couldn't stay friends with someone that stupid.
