New Jersey

thanks gov. christie

for making my future a little more uncertain by cutting school aid and budgets and making my district pink slip all non tenure teachers and not have an idea of whether or not i will have a job until june. this is perfect timing as we have just set a closing date for our house and getting married in 5 months!!!
seriously - this couldn't happen 5 years from now or 5 years ago?

Can I thank him?  NJ teachers are HIGHLY Overpaid, underworked, and overappreciated.  Our state Budget is screwed cause of the teachers and police unions that keep our state broke.  Teachers outside of Jersey make like 20-25K yet in NJ they start at like 50-55K.  They get tenure after 3 years, which is ridiculous, it should be after 20, and they retire at 55 which is ridiculous.

Teachers have been immune to the economy, they should all have taken huge paycuts and had their pensions cut in half, if not eliminated... just like the rest of us.

And half of the NJ police stations should be shut down, they can use the sheriffs department for crimes, cause if there is a significant crime that is who handles it anyway.  The average cop in my town makes $140K including overtime, that is the biggest crime where I live, their pay.

hmm brad, a little insensitive, don't you think? i don't know what you do, but spend just 1 day in any classroom teaching and you would realize that the job is not just 181 days out of the year and 7 hours a day. teachers outside of NJ make 20-25K because cost of living is lower, not by that much, but still lower, than living in NJ

I never comment on this but seriously brad, I don't think you have a clue. People that think like this make me so mad. Teachers NEVER get paid for their overtime, while they certainly work well beyond the school hours. I always get to school over an hour before I have to, and take home a ton of work..which is what I am doing while my non-teacher friends are out at happy hours.  I also do a ton of work on the weekend. I put out my own money for the students, to buy school supplies classroom activities, etc., and my school gives me only $75 a year for supplies--while I spend hundreds on them to make sure that they are getting what they need. This is not just me--this is typical for teachers. Maybe not how much $ they spend--but it's not an easy job.

As far as tenure, yes I have it, but no I do not think that everyone should. I do see some people that do the bare minimum which is not in the best interest in the children and is honestly kind of pathetic.

And as far as how much money I make...it's still not enough because I have to work every summer just to pay the bills.

So I say screw Christie and cutting school money.
  • edited December 2011
you SHOULD work the summer, cause a teacher isnt a full time job it is part time, no one should be able to survive on a teacher salary alone cause it isnt a full time job.  A teacher in NJ should start at around $25-30K and get tenure after 20 years and have a maximum salary of like 60-70K and that is after like 20 years of work.  And they shouldnt retire until 65, like everyone else, none of this I retire with a full pension at 55.

It isnt as bad as the cops, who make $140K a year, and retire with 6 figure pensions, but it is still bad and needs to be fixed.  60% of property taxes go to schools alone, that is insane.

@brad...i am sorry you are such a bitter person. when you choose to have childrem remember it is those overpaid teachers that deal with your children 185 days a year 7 hours a day and more. those over paid teacher go out of ther to make your children meet their academic potential those over paid teacher not only educate children academically but socially and morally too i earn my pennies as a teacher and deserve everyone i dare you to walk into a classroom of over 20 children for one day,and then tell teachers that they are over paid.
  • edited December 2011
I love the children argument, I know at least 10 teachers if not more, none of them went into it to educate children, they do it cause the pay is high, the benefits are insanely good, the hours are ridiculously good, the summers off and all the holidays, get off your high horse.

WOW Brad you are a wanker roll today aren't you...

I don't know what OP said in response to you, BUT, do you know how many evenings teachers work and weekends?  Conferences, Grading Papers, Doing plans, etc...I hope you never plan on having kids because this will ruin districts and what you say, WILL RUIN districts.  As well as I hope you have a guard dog and an alarm system because the cop thing is insane...

By the way I am not a teacher.
  • edited December 2011
so you have no problem with the FACT that the average cop in my town which has little to Zero crime, makes $140K a year???  Or that a teacher in my area starts at $50-55K a year, when they are in class 5 1/2 hours a day, half a year, and all the crap about teachers working at home and weekends isnt true.  I know about 10 teachers, the most they do is grade papers in their PJ's at home watching TV, that isnt work.

No, you get off YOUR high horse. I've kept my mouth shut over all the other crap you've pulled on this board, but it ends right now. I've wanted ot be a teacher since I was 5 years old, and it never had anything to do with all this so-called time you think we have off. You would never be able to do our job, because you're too arrogant and inconsiderate. I am a teacher and I pay for my benefits. I work summers. I work before school, after school, and on weekends either doing school work, teaching school program, doing lunch duties, etc. . During the day we are nurses, moms, friends, social workers to in my case 26 students. You have no idea what we deal with, and clearly you wouldn't last one day in a classroom. Get your facts straight...

    and Uppereast is 100% right.

I also hope you tell your friends what you think about their jobs...

answer the question brad, what exactly do you do? you obviously bash other occupations because you hate yours and wish you could have done something else with your otherwise mundane life.

and with the whole kid thing, you will prob be the type of parent that doesn't give a crap about their kid so their kid will come to their "overpaid, underworked, and overappreciated" teacher and look to them for guidance and support because their dad doesn't care about the work that they do

For those of us for are NOT teachers in NJ, can you tell us how much teachers make in public schools in NJ? Can you give me a range from starting salary to experienced teach with tenure?
  • edited December 2011
Like I said 3 times, dont give me the you dont know what I do crap, I know at least 10 teachers.  My mom, my sister, my aunt, 3 friends, a few cousins, a few coworker's wives.... etc.  They all laugh about how good they have it and how easy teaching is.  My sister teaches in Paterson, in 3 years has tenure and makes $60K a year.  Just the fact that they have a pension is ridiculous.

I would have to make $200-250K a year just to be equal with a teacher with all the time off, holidays, benefits and pension that a teacher makes, and I will now use everyones favorite word, but you teachers are too IGNORANT to realize how good you have it.

Yea and maybe these teachers you know are the crappy ones who dont put any effort into what they do and truly don't deserve their tenure.  Because not one of the outstanding teachers in my school ever say their job is easy.

I did not take my job because it was an easy profession and wanted good pay.  I could have chosen many other fields where the pay is better &  the expectations are less.

    So screw you.

I come from a family of teachers (including my mom, sister, brother, etc.) & they all work EXTREMELY hard on a daily basis (including summers, weekends, evenings) to get their job done & help students. Maybe YOUR family doesn't work hard enough for the amount they are being paid, but that is certainly NOT the case with all teachers. Just because some people are not doing the job they should be doesn't mean all teachers should suffer.

If you think people should be paid for the effort they put in, fine, but then I suggest you tell your family to give a portion of their salary to teachers who do put in the necessary time to help students achieve their goals.

Let's just do some quick math, NOT INCLUDING OVERTIME, cause most professionals dont gets paid overtime.  And I work more overtime than any teacher can imagine, last 2 months 70 hours a week working 7 days a week, havent had a weekend off in 2 months......

So the average teacher in this area starts around $50K, I have been working for 8 years, so lets assume a teacher after 8 years, with increases and a master's degree to even out my professional license, makes $80K a year, which is pretty conservative.

now a teacher is in class for average of 5.5 hours a day, I work without overtime 9 hours a day MINIMUM.   so I work without overtime 60 more than a teacher, I also work 260 days a year, compared to a teacher's 185, so letst adjust a teacher salary for that

$80K times 1.6 for average work day is now $128K a year

then lets adjust for 41% working less days a year than me,

    $128K times 1.41 is now a salary of $180K a year

Now let's adjust for their RIDICULOURSLY better benefits health and dental, so that is another 10-20K a year, so let's say 15K

Now that is $195K a year in salary, and that isnt with their pension, so that is another $25-30K a year that I would have to make to equal your pension, so let's be conservative and add $25K

    now a teacher's equivavlent salary is $220K.

and after that I can be fired any day for no reason and a teacher cannot so you can add whatever you want to a teacher's salary to factor in the value of their job being secure, and you get somewhere around $250K a year.

I'm not a teacher. My sister is, FFIL is, a bunch of friends also - some in NY, some in NJ.  I know the pay scale and the time and effort they all go through. It's a full time job, not part time.

I just want to tell you ladies, that this isn't worth the aggravation it's causing.  Just let it roll off of your shoulders and be happy that you are enriching the lives of many students.

so you are saying a teacher of 8 years WITH a Master's degree doesnt make $80K.  Cause I am pretty sure with that level of experience and a Master's that is the pay scale, if not a little light on the pay scale.

My mom has been working her entire life as a teacher, is certified k-12, has her masters, supervisor certificate & is at the top of the pay scale & only makes around 80k....this is 80k for 35 yrs experience.
