No ushers for us?

We're toying with the idea of saving money by not having ushers.  Its not a huge wedding - 250-300 people.  Do you think guests will figure out how to seat themselves without ushers?  What are the pros and cons?  I'm thinking the sides may be uneven anyways so maybe having ushers could help even the sides out.  Not sure...we need advice!

Re: No ushers for us?

  • Thanks for all the helpful advice, everyone!
  • Yep, you don't need ushers....and anything over 150 guests IMO is a large wedding.

  • I've been to weddings with over 500 people.  One was as big as 800.  IMHO those were *huge* weddings, so I can take the OP's point.  I consider 250-300 to be really big :P

I don't think ushers are necessary, I think it's really a matter of preference.  At most weddings I've been to, no one has acted as an usher and the one time the GM's did, I got kind of annoyed because the etiquette apparently is that the GM escorts the woman and the man walks behind and I didn't want to be escorted like that.  I've always managed to find a seat on my own.  We might have them, but I don't think it's necessary at all.
