Chinese Red Envelope

Hi there!
My husband and I are attending a Chinese wedding in NYC and the bride and groom are requesting a red envelope. I know that is is a preference for cash but we were wondering if there is a customary amount. We are already travelling quite a distance and staying overnight (expensive hotel) so money is pretty tight. Any advice? I'm not sure if there are particulars that are expected so I thought I'd ask.

    I'd say treat it like any other cash gift, and just give what you can afford (taking into consideration that you're also spending money to be there). Try to avoid amounts with the number 4 in it though (e.g. $40) in case they're superstitious. 8 is a good number though.

    Avoid the number 4. Traditionally number of 2, 6, 8, 10 is good. Usually it is the amount that would covering your meal. Closer friends would give more, close relatives, like aunts and uncles give a lot more. I got $1000 from my aunt.
