Ethical Catering

Hi Chas Brides!
I just got engaged and am starting the planning process. I already forsee an issue with finding a caterer since I am a vegetarian and my fiance is not. I am a vegetarian for ethical reasons, which my fiance respects (and he tries to get his meat from certified humane sources when possible), but we've never had to order "ethical meat" for a large group before. It is important to my fiance for there to be meat options for his family at the reception, but I don't want to put my money into the factory farming system. Does anyone know of a catering company in the Charleston area that gets their meat from farms that are certified humane?
I would be thrilled to hear from anyone with ideas of where to start!

Re: Ethical Catering

  • I'm not sure how easy it would be to find a caterer with whom you could be positive that the meat you would be serving would be 100% humane BUT what if you purchased the meat from somewhere else and had your selected caterer prepare it? Or if you could even purchase an already prepared meat dish from a provider of humane and ethical meat? Here is the link to Whole Foods, a market in Mt Pleasant SC that prides themselves on working with a Global Animal Partnership that work to protect the welfare of the animals. http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/about-our-products/quality-standards/animal-welfare-standards I hope this helps to get you looking in the right direction!

    <div>Thanks! All great ideas.</div>
  • Most of the catering companies we met with used produce and product from local farmers so there is a good possibility that you may be able to find out where they are getting the product from and check it out for yourself.
  • me and my fiance are both vegetarian/vegan, but wanted to serve meat for our guests.  rich has a lot of experience with vegetarian as well as other catering.  he is using local cheeses, eggs from his own chickens, local fish, greens from his garden, and ethical local free range cow for our one beef dish.  we have both worked with animals out entire life and ethics is a huge issue for us.  he has been great with all of it and has made us very comfortable with everything.  you can check out his website.
