Snarky Brides

XP to E, but I need your help!

I am directing Guys and Dolls Jr. at my middle school.  But I'm not just the director, I'm the director, musical director, choreographer, lighting/sound designer, technical director, costumer, all in one!  ::headdesk::  I'm in the process of finding costumes for the girls for Bushel and a Peck - I have 12 Hot Box Girls who need to be dressed identically, and I found this costume:

I love it.  It's adorable, it's not too short, and in various sizes, it fit all the girls.  So I placed the orders and now I've run into problems.  They ran out of stock (it's one warehouse that ships to all of these costuming companies) and I currently am in possession of 3 larges and 4 mediums.  Ideally, I'd have 5 larges and 7 mediums, but I can make it work with 4 smalls, 4 mediums, and 4 larges based on the sizes of my girls, or with 3/4 larges, 5/6 mediums, and 3 smalls.

I need help finding more of this costume.  I'm in contact with an e-bay distributor to see what sizes he has (he says he has 10 costumes but if they're 10 smalls it's no good to me), but I either need to find this costume or find an alternative.  The biggest problem I'm running into is that this is middle school, and the costumes I'm finding are RIDICULOUSLY short/slutty.  The problem is that the costumes HAVE to match (gee, sound familiar anyone?) because they're backup dancer to Adelaide, who I have dressed in a Dorothy costume.  I *could* reverse the dresses, but I can't find Dorothy for under $30 that still appropriate, and it needs to be at the $30 mark because the girls are paying for their own dresses.  I had found the red riding hood ones for $23, and that included shipping!

I could really use some help, and I'd appreciate anything I can get.  Do you know someone with the costume, gently used?  I'll consider anything at this point.  Please help!  And thanks.

  • I hate to be a buzz kill, but my mom would have killed me for wearing that in middle school :( I do love it, but I wonder about the crowd you are asking??

Yup.  That doesn't really seem appropriate for a middle school aged girl to me.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

  • I get that it will be longer on a middle school sized girl and that they probably wear more slutty costumes than this for Halloween.  I think the corset and thigh-highs are what pushes it over the edge for me.

Just out of curiosity, why are they wearing these costumes for Guys and Dolls?  I'm not familiar with the junior version of the play--is it different? I'm just wondering.

I think our choral director/director of the musical hits up different distributors, but since you're already talking to the company that distributes to everyone, I probably don't have too much to offer. :(
  • We've had the girls try on the costumes in person, which is how I know sizes.  I've seen each of them in the costume. They cover everything that needs to be covered and then some, which is one of the reasons we're ok going with this costume.  This costume, on most of the girls, comes to their knees.  This is why I AM having so many issues finding a costume, most of them are far too inappropriate.  I've sent back SEVERAL costumes that were far far too short.

  • What's a Hot Box Girl?

Also, I think that costume might be a little too sexual for a middle schooler.

  • Have you tried any Ricky's stores? (I don't even know if they are still opened this late - but if they are, it could be greatly discounted)
  • Nates - it's for the scene with Bushel and a Peck.  We've ordered the dress, and we're using the capes with the mission band - we're definitely NOT ordering the tights, and the girls will just wear character shoes.  And yes, on a middle school girl, it's very appropriate.  The parents have seen what we're thinking about and are on board with it.

  • Gotcha.

Ricky's is a huge costume retailer in our area (me and GPB) and the costumes tend to be very nice/upscale/expensive.  They probably work with the same kind of distributors you do, though, I'd imagine.
  • Maybe it's the picture and the model's pose that's turning me off. if the parents are ok with it, who am I to say anything?
    imageimage
  • And the costumes will be a really great quality.  So if you can find something, the quality plus sale prices might be worth it to the parents.

<div>It's pretty similar - they cut out My Time of Day, Take Back Your Mink, More I Cannot Wish You, The Crapshooters Dance, and Sue Me.  A lot of dialogue gets cut as well.</div><div>
</div><div>Basically, the Jr. versions of shows are like the full versions, but they cut out as much sex and violence as possible while still keeping the show going.  Which means I still have some kissing and fighting to stage.  I feel bad about it, especially because I didn't really choose the show and was kinda handed it!</div>

  • Well, I just checked the Ricky's website.  They don't have it.  I may call them in the morning to see if they have anything in stock that isn't listed.  In the meantime, any one know anybody who was Red Riding Hood for Halloween this year, or have any ideas for alternative costumes? Undecided

  • I love guys and dolls, I have to say it. But why not have the girls wear back dresses with feathers or something? I mean, it is a "dumbed down" version...
  • Where on LI are you?

You should just rent from a local theater.  It'll be WAY cheaper.  I can give you names if you need them, I've worked in theaters in Suffolk and Nassau.

  • I also think you should see if you have some moms who know how to sew.  The girls could buy their own black bodysuit and you can have someone make a gingham skirt SUPER easy.  You might need to buy the cape, but you might be able to find someone who can make that, too.

I've been in your position for MANY years and parents are your greatest resource.

Also, does your HS have a costume closet that you can pick through?

Can you PM me and tell me what district you're in?  I used to teach in the central Suffolk area.  Heck, I'll put you in touch with my former costume designer and see if she has anything you can borrow.

Our HS rented for specific things, but you never know what's in a closet that someone donated.

Have you heard of CM Performing Arts Center?  I'll PM you my friend's name and email...he does the costumes there and at a few other places, I think.

  • It would be a long shot but try joining a freecycle group for your area. There might be someone willing to give up an old costume or let you borrow it.

  • As usual, I'm coming way late to a thread. That's what I get for trolling Zappos for a NYE outfit at the last minute.

Sai, have you tried Norcostco? They're a theatrical costume company, and they have literally the biggest warehouse I've ever seen filled with costumes and props and other theatrical goodness. I would try Ricky's first, but they're definitely a good source to look into. They rent and sell, and if you happen to know the manufacturer of the costume you can probably call and ask if they have it.

The full name is Norcostco Eastern Costume, and they're on Route 46 West in Fairfield, NJ. Website: Clicky
