New Health Care Bill

Anyone else excited about being able to stay on their parents insurance even after they are married? My fiance got booted off his parents insurance when he graduated high school so he hasn't had insurance for 2 years( he didn't go to college right away). Now with the new bill he can get on their insurance whether or not he is a full time student or married. This will save us sooo much money. I know some people won't agree with us staying on our parents insurance since we will be married and should be able to support ourselves, but it would only be until I finished my program in school and was able to get a "real" good paying job (about eight months).

Ugh...I meant to ask this in your other post. How old are you?

    Seriously?

Well, I think that although socialized healthcare might not be the best thing, I am happy that no one can be refused insurance for pre-existing conditions. I know that the disease my fiance has (one round of the medicine he has to take each month is $40,000) would exclude him from getting insurance through most ways without it. Now he would be able to get insurance and we wont have to pay through the nose to keep him alive.

That is really the only reason that I am glad with the bill because I know that socialized medicine does have a hell of a lot of glitches, which make me nervous. As far as staying on your parent's health insurance after you're married....really? Thats's why you're so excited?

Well, its actually more serious than just saving money. He has a liver disease and because he has not had insurance for two years, has had no way of monitoring his condition. He only works part time, goes to school full time, and we have no idea what kind of job he will have after we get married and what kind of insurance they will provide. We had been actually planning on getting our own insurance until my dad mentioned the new health care bil how he had already intended on me staying on it until I finished school- it was his offer. He wanted to offer that to me because he cannot help out with paying for the wedding, so this would be his contribution. Otherwise, we are honestly doing everything ourselves-buying our own furniture, paying our rent, paying for school, and the entire wedding. This just takes a major stressor off our shoulders. And it is only temporary.

Next time I would start with that part. Otherwise you come off as a spoiled little girl who wants mommy and daddy to pay for everything. Just for future reference. I hope your fiance gets better because I know how hard it is to have to deal with a sick guy. My fiance was in Tarzana medical center for 2 monthsm UCLA medical center for about 3 months, and a physical rehab center for about 2-3 more months. If we had to pay for that ourselves we wouldnt be able to and he would have died, so the pre-existing part is amazing to me.

I was excited for this bill because I thought it would help me out (I'm still in grad school and only working part time). Instead I got royally screwed over by my parent's health insurance. They kicked me off a month before the bill went into affect because I turned 23, told me I could go back on in September no problem, September rolls around and they say sorry you can't go back on until the subscription renews again in August 2011. I had use student loans to pay for my health insurance through the school because it was too late to try and apply for HealthyNY at that point and I did not have an extra $2000 just laying around to give them.

Jeez some people are so judgmental on these boards! I was excited about the new health care bill too because I'm in grad school and working as a nanny and my FI graduated from college a year ago with a teaching degree, and thanks to the lovely economy he can't find a full-time teaching job with benefits, so we'll take the insurance where we can get it....please people, try to be a little more understanding and not jump the gun on writing people off as "spoiled."
