jumping the broom? i need advice

My fiance is multi-ethnic and I'm an Italian girl. We really want to incorporate important parts of our heritage into our wedding ceremony and he as expressed an interest in jumping the broom. He was raised in an African-American family and loves that tradition.

I am all for it- I just don't know a thing about it or where to get a broom.

Please let me know how this was incorporated into your ceremony .. where you get a broom ... etc!

I love the blending of our cultures and our families and I don't want to offend anyone by doing it wrong?

Is he still in contact with the family that raised him? Couldn't you just ask them?

we had the broom brought to us at the end of the ceremony. our officiant read aloud about the custom. we also had info on our program. you should be able to find a broom at michael's or hobby lobby, depending on the time of year. i didn't have any luck, so i made one myself. there are also sites where you can buy them decorated. also check ebay. like a pp said, check with your marriage site. some folk might not care for the origins of the custom. if you want any more info, feel free to send me a PM.

When I've seen it done, someone brought out the broom at the end of the ceremony - in one case, it was tucked under the MOB's chair and she just pulled it out. It was set down in the aisle in front of the couple, the officiant said a few words about the tradition (putting it in the program is a nice idea, too) and then they just jumped over it.
