How far is too far for a second line?

Trying to decide on venues still, and we want to second line between the ceremony and the reception. About 1/3 of our small group is elderly or underage, so a second line out after the reception to the bars would leave too many people out.

We will probably have our reception at the Musee Conti Wax Museum, and I'm not sure if we will have our ceremony there or elsewhere.

We will be hiring a carriage for our parents who wouldn't be able to handle the walk.

If you have the ceremony at your reception site, you could always second line around the block and then come back to the site.

I like the WAX for the reception, but I'd really like a courtyard or garden or outdoor place for the ceremony.  I think in the long run it will be a lot easier to have both events there.

Our 2nd line will be 7 and a half blocks form the church to the reception venue.  We've walked it about 3 times (in sneakers and in heels) to see if it felt too long and it seems fine to me but I have no idea what the norm is down there.  If it matters, the police officer we spoke to about our permit, called it "long".  I don't know-- doesn't seem long to me.

He may have called it 'long' because they tend to move kind of slow...so it may take a while.  Out of curiosity, how many officers did you have to hire for your group?  I am curious as we are still vaguely considering a second line, though I think our budget may not allow it now that an unexpected $1800 cost has popped up!  I know they require an officer per certain number of guests, but I just don't know how many guests that is!

I read that second lines are typically 5 to 7 blocks. I am interested in having one as well. Any ideas of how soon you should get a permit and how I can go about doing so...is there a form I can get online somewhere?

You have to contact Sgt. Powers at the nopd, phone number 504.658.6201 The cost of the permit is $50.25 and $100 per police escort. The number needed is dependent on how many people, but I think they usually send three as a default. They don't approve the permit Tom two weeks prior, sometimes later. To avoid confusion, it is best to physically go to the office, pay, and get a receipt. If you are OOT like I was, just make sure to get it done as soon as you get to Nola. Ofcourse, send the application in at least 3 months before the wedding date, you can fax or email. The station address is : 715 South Broad Street

Queen Jane is right, they seem to default to 3 officers (especially if you have over 50 guests).

I've been faxing/mailing the application in since September with no kind of confirmation.  Last week when I started getting antsy since the wedding was 3 weeks away my Wedding Coordinator Extraordinaire (cannot say enough good things about Elyse Skansi!) she went and confirmed for me that we were on their calendar.  They said we can pay with cash or money order on the day of.

I am having our second line from the St. Louis Cathedral to the Wax and it is about 7 blocks.  I just put info in several different places on my wedding website letting people know this is the plan and stating that if they will have trouble making that walk (a slow walk), please let us know and we will help with transportation arrangements.  If my elderly grandparents are able to make it to NO for the wedding, we will have a car or the limo take them to the reception.  If there are others, we will figure something else out.  But overall, I don't think it is "too far" for those who are physically able to walk.
