REPOST: Does my make up artist need to be Black?

So I posted this the other day but it has mysteriously disappeared, thanks to the Knot's technical difficulties! LOL

I saw a few answers that said no, but some ladies said yes and had their reasons. There was also a post from a knottie in Los Angeles that had someone. I wanted that MUA information too..

So ladies.. please answer again.. does she or he need to be Black, and why or why not?

Re: REPOST: Does my make up artist need to be Black?

  • Not necessarily.  It's a matter of personal preference and if you think he/she won't make you look washed out, ashy, too much make up, etc...

Mine was Black and I was happy with her but she also does White women's make up too!  But then again, I don't wear make up daily so I would want a Black person to do mine cause I would like to believe that they know what they are doing, but that could be seen as a generalization.  Not every Black hairstylist I've been too could touch my hair again, you see what I'm saying?

Sorry, not sure I was any help. Embarassed
  • No but make sure they know how to work with ethnic skin ask for some pictures of their clients

  • No. Mine isn't/wasn't... never is.

    See my face?

    BEAT!

To me (and this is just my opinion) black MUAs just seem to over do it a lot of the time.

  • My MUA is black...but its a gay "him".... I imagine a white "her" could do just as well as long as they have experience with people of color

My MUA said the same thing.

She's black, btw, but she's also doing makeup for two hispanics in my group.

  • No, a true MUA can do all skin types. I don't wear makeup except for special events so I just go to my local MAC. My favorite MUA's there are actually Hispanic and Asian.
  • I guess TK ate my last post to you on our local board. I sent you a referral on there. I'll post it again. IMO, I don't think she has to be black. I only wear make up on special occasions and the mua that did mine for my sister's wedding wasn't black and she did a good job.
  • Mine is white and is experienced with all ethnicities.

  • I don't know what mine is but I've spoken to her references and all of them were extremely satisfied.

I broke the cardinal rule, but my hair stylist isn't black but besides my grandma nobody has done my hair like her. Just be sure the person you're hiring can work well with your tone and preferences.

<div>That is SO cute! I actually posted the first time that the MUA doesn't have to be Black but that "hair is a different story." I stand corrected.

</div><div>I think that MUAs are flexible and good ones know how to work with anyone.  Having said that, I'm the one with the expensive MUA in Los Angeles. Her name is Monique Powers (<a href="http://www.moniquepowers.com)." rel="nofollow">http://www.moniquepowers.com).</a>  I'm tryna be more BEAUTIOUS than ever on the big day... </div><div><img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-wink.gif" border="0" alt="Wink" title="Wink" /></div>
  • Your make up artist should be hired based on what he or she can do. Once you have gone to several places and actually had them make you up go with the one you like the most. So try black make up artists and white make up artists, even spanish or asian it doesn't matter, it's who does the best job and who you feel made you look your best. Make a list and visit all of them maybe weekly until three weeks before the wedding that way you can try them all get reviews on how you look and make a decision. I wouldn't tell anyone who did your make up just let them critic it and then you will pick the best artist regardless of race.  Experience matters.
  • I keep reading that MAC doesn't photograph well.  I was going to try them out so who else would you guys recommend?
