flying paper lanterns

Does anyone know how to find out if its legal to have flying paper lanterns as a send-off (do I need to check with the city/fire dept/etc?)?  If you've seen the movie 'tangled' then you can get an idea of what the lanterns would look like

    Maybe call up the local fire department?  We did this for a friends wedding last year.  The only way we were allowed to was if we went to the end of the pier over the ocean.  It was beautiful and the photographer got some great pics of the bride and groom sending some off.

    Ditto PP.  A lot of states lump them in with fireworks in regards to regulations.

    I think they're lovely, but AFAIK most residential areas don't allow them.
