no, a unifying field theory of algebra doesn't exist.

Dude came in, asked if we could help him w/ a math formula.

Sure, what does he need

"The algebra formula"
"for what part of algebra"
"all of it...I need the formula tht solves all the algbra problems"

He didn't believe me that it didn't exist.  And he wasn't especially happy that, in 15 minutes, my tutors couldn't make him understand all of algebra.

Did he mean the quadradic equation? I felt like that was magical back in algebra class.

nope, he was taking math classes to low to be at the quad. equation level.

    He was a bit 'off'.
He kinda just wanted to come in at 5:20 last night and have all math make sense by 5:45 w/o any work, using a book, or writing anything down.

I always have a calculator in my purse...
but still do 90% of it in my head.

Or else I ask the Mr. because he does it in his head faster than I do :-P

But when you're taking the gmat you DO need the quadratic equation and you DO NOT get to use a calculator. I'm dying. This practice book is seriously murder.

Well, that is the bonus of being a degree-less slacker.

I don't think we got to use a calculator for the GRE and I did OK.

I'm not really big on calculators for higher math anyhow...more for the 'whoops, addition error' that kills me.
(I can do math; I"m out of practice at higher math but I can do it.
But if it hadn't been for partial ctedit?  I'd have been SOL.  Because I really do lousy at remembering the details.
There's a reason there's a shortage of people w/ ADHD in math fields.  Stupid 'careless errors'--I forget my - signs and everything goes to pot)

As a current statistics student, Math Sucks.  I make stupid sign errors all the time.  Chi chart?  Huh?   I haven't used any of the higher math I learned  in HS and don't forsee using it 30+ years later after I finish this degree either.
