1920s theme?

Hey ladies! So I want to incorporate the 1920s into my wedding since I think it would go perfectly with the venue we picked for our Nov 3 2012 wedding. As much as I like the 1920s I dont want my bridesmaids in flapper dresses and go too over the top with the theme. I was wondering if anyone knew some subtle ways to incorporate the era into the decorations and whole vibe of the wedding. We are having our wedding at historic mansion so we have many different rooms to work with. Also any ideas on some good color schemes that will work well for a november vintage wedding. Thanks soo much :)

As far as your colour scheme goes, this really depends on your rooms.  You don't want something that will look awful if your room is already a bold colour--and you say you have a lot of rooms to choose from.  Is there a neutral or complimentary colour that will work with all of them?  Sometimes golds, creams and classic black works with everything.  I love pastels for a 1920s theme--like gold and mint green, but that might not be your thing.

Also, I wanted to add that 1920s doesn't automatically mean flapper.  Just like 1930s isn't automatically old hollywood.  Some of the every day fashions from that era were lovely, and not so risque.  For your maids (or yourself) look for a drop waist dress that comes to the calf or knees, and if the dresses are unstructured, that's even better!  Check this link out for inspiration:

  • Oh, yeah--the gold/taupe/black sort of thing would be a great foundation for some color touches. That sounds great to me too.

And also agree on the pastels. My grandmother's ring that I use as my engagement ring is a lovely light aquamarine. It came to me from my mom in the original pink art deco box.

The typefaces for the 20s are very distinctive and would look great on invites. And some deco frames for table numbers and that stuff would also be cool on any color scheme.

It might not work as well for the 20s, but I found myself going to IMDB and looking through movie stills of the period for inspiration too.

Such as: http://www.imdb.com/year/1920/ And look at the movie pages. Maybe also the Lillian Gish pages/photos.

  • A great way to add to the theme is with music. How about playing some 1920s music in the background during dinner? There are a lot of great 20s CDs available. I really like some of the songs on Nipper's Greatest Hits.

I would also look up Art Deco styling. In the 1920s geometric shapes were really popular, and so was Arabian/Egyptian stuff. Potted palms can give a swank 20s vibe and are pretty cheap. I've seen them at Walmart and Home Depot.

You definitely don't have to do flapper dresses to fit with the theme. In the 20s most dresses were waistless, long, and had a somewhat slim fit. If that wont look good on your girls, an empire waist might look somewhat 20s, too.

If you are having a bar, cocktails were becomming very popular at the time, especially drinks like martinis.

  • I am doing a 1920's inpired wedding in October 2012. The colors we chose are off white, black and dark purple to offset the yellows and oranges of the season. I'm not sure how much you have planned, but I found a great set of letterpress invitations that inspired the theme at GoldenRectanglePress.com. The design is called Gatsby and it would fit perfectly with any 1920's inspired wedding. Best of luck!
