[QUOTE]This is so annoying.  I can understand once or twice but that is rediculous.  A teacher today left early because she was having a bad day.  I can't believe anyone would use this as an excuse but she did and just left and got a sub.  It pissed me off beyond belief.  Everyone has bad days suck it up.  (also this teacher is out all the time)

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Is this fonked up to you? : Oh, don't do that!  I feel really lucky all the time!  This has nothing to do with the OP, but I find that when I encounter people or situations like this one I just remind myself that I just have to worry about me and that if more people just worried about themselves and not everyone around them the world would be a happier place!  It sounds so immature to me, she gets to do this, but I don't it's not fair or she gets to spend 75k on her wedding and I don't.  It makes me think of my 3 year old niece stamping her little foot telling me it's not fair that she has a bedtime and I don't.  I'm happier (than I was before) because I just think of how lucky and blessed I am in my own life.

Good for you. I was sorta kidding anyway. It was more a comment on your response to Ricks. I get the point you're trying to make, but I think it would have been great to say this to her instead of coming off a wee bit patronizing like you did. <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-undecided.gif" border="0" alt="Undecided" title="Undecided" />

  • Sucrets are you all getting hit with the teachers' cuts? I don't know much about it but is it that bad?

  • I think if you get stuck with her again, I would then say something to your professor on how you feel it would affect you and your grades.

Until then, i think most teachers either turn a blind eye, or they don't want to spend the time trying to investigate.

In your OP you didn't ask for help.

If you want advice on what to do then.. if you get her assigned with you for a project tell the professor you are not comfortable with that since the last project you did with her you had to do all the work or because of her frequent absences.  If you have to work with her, try to split the presentation into half you present this, she presents that.  Then she can fail on her own.

My old district in NY is getting totally screwed and a TON of teachers are losing their jobs.  If the budget doesn't pass (the community votes on it in May), most music teachers will lose their jobs, including my bff who has been there for 6 years.  It doesn't sound like a lot, but there are actually lots of people that were hired after her since all the baby boomers are being offered great state incentives to retire.

It doesn't seem to be as drastic down here, though.

    Very true.

Sucrets, that is good that it isn't bad over there. I hope your friend gets to keep her job!

  • If there's anything I've learned after four years of navigating the complicated politics of a grad program, it's that first of all, the faculty notice a lot more than you think they do, and second of all, the best way to get through it all looking good is to focus on yourself and forget everybody else. Think about it. Every time she misses a test, the faculty member in question has to consider writing a second exam (we always have a different makeup to prevent cheating), schedule a day for the makeup, and then wait to hand back everyone else's exams until the makeup is completed. As an instructor, I can say it's a huge pain in the ass whenever someone misses a test, and I definitely remember the students who do. Trust me, your faculty members do notice that something is going on.

The second half is that it's never good to complain about another student, unless it definitely effects you. If you get assigned to work with her again, go ahead and say something, but otherwise it's best to keep to yourself.

Last year, we had a girl come into the program who made lots of huge mistakes right off the bat, including being at least 15 minutes late to almost every class and being at the center of a bunch of controversies. At the time, I thought she was setting herself up for something bad, but all of the professors seemed to like her, and then I started to like her, and then I forgot about it. Suddenly this week I found out that she's been asked to leave the program. This kind of stuff does add up.

  • Sounds like you need to kick her in the beaver muffin and tell her "get a doctor's note for that!"

Sorry, I just wanted to use that. When I read a post with Fischy using that term last week I laughed about it for days.
