Getting in Shape

Here Comes the Whale

So, has trying to lose weight made anyone else feel hopeless and super frustrated?

I've always felt like I could stand to lose a few pounds, but with my wedding just 3 months away I'm SUPER worried about it. My friends keep saying "Oh, it doesn't matter how you look, when you look at the photos all you'll see is how happy you are" and I want to say "Um, no...I'll just see fat."

I feel like there's no way I'll look good on my wedding day and at this point I'm so depressed about it I feel like I don't even want to try anymore.

Anyone else ever feel like this? And any tips on how to stop being such a Debbie Downer and actually enjoy the last 3 months of planning?

  • I think you need to learn to have confidence in yourself and in the way you look. You need to be comfortable in your own skin. If you're uncomfortable and not confident that WILL come across in photos..same is true of the opposite.

There are steps you can take to tone up and lose a few lbs before your wedding if you're willing to put in the effort....but no one can motivate you but yourself.

Also, no one can change your debbie downer attitude but yourself as well. Maybe tomorrow you can wake up and look at it as a new day and a fresh start. Goodluck!

  • I think the first thing you need to do is make goals for yourself... There is no set solution for this and you will not lose it with all the megative thoughts in your head. You need to decide what you want and make SMART goals for it. You have three months and this should be a great time for you...

Focus on what you want and change your attitude. I make a board of what I wanted and quotes to motivate me... It helps me and look at it whenever I feel terrible. It turns me around and makes me remember what I am fighting for.

  • Thanks ladies! I hate to be such a whiner! The worst part is that I'm usually pretty comfortable in my own skin, but the wedding has been bringing out some insecurities.  I guess the idea of having everyone stare at me all day freaks me out, haha :) Not to mention I used to be one of those people who could eat whatever they wanted and not gain a pound, but once I turned 30 I swear a switch flipped and every calorie shows.

I did download an app called FatSecret which tracks all of my calories and exercise. I'm hoping that once I get used to eating smaller meals I won't feel hungry and grouchy all day long. I'm going to check out MyFitnessPal, too.

Thanks for the supportive posts, I appreciate it!

  • I agree with you that that's bs. If you don't like the way you look, then you don't like the way you look. Seeing yourself smiling in pictures won't change that.

But ultimately you are the way you are because of the choices YOU have made; and only you can motivate yourself to change your diet, sleeping, and exercise habits  to fix that.

Being a debbie downer could EASILY have something to do with your diet. When I eat like crap, I feel like crap. My emotions are crap. Your food directly affects your attitude. Eating more raw, whole foods can help adjust that.

But I will tell you that it's a self-fulfilling prophecy right now. You are beating yourself up and depressed, which puts stress on your body. That releases cortisol (a horomone in your body) which will slow your metabolism and hold on to fat (when your body feels stressed it feels like it needs to hold onto all calories and fat it can) It also keeps you from sleeping well. And guess what happens when you don't get quality sleep? Release of cortisol.
    Yup.
    Cruel cycle.
It's time for you to adjust your attitude. Tell yourself that you are you because of you, and it's time to improve you for you.
Food logging is a wonderful thing.
Strength training will speed up your metabolism, stop some of the cortisol release, will help you sleep better, and will give you sexy muscle definition to show off in your gown.
Strength training and cardio will both help you watch yourself progress, which is always a great feeling and will pick you up.

    You have three months.
    THAT IS SO MUCH TIME!!!
    Get at it, girl.
  • Thank you!! That makes me feel better :)

I should also add that I quit smoking 3 months ago, so that may have some residual effect on my mood (and even eating). So even if I'm a bit pudgy, at least I'm not smoking anymore!

I'm glad I found this board,  you gals are great!

  • ummm yeah. That's a HUGE deal! Lol
I'm sure that is a huge factor into your mood lately. Even when you don't want to, eat well. Tell yourself how much happier you'll be tomorrow if you eat well today.
Food logging will also keep you distracted and having goals like that will help you stop focusing on the lack of smoking because your focus is on a better body for you.
Join in on the accountability thread, and hopefully you'll stick around.

  • I'll definitely check it out! Thank you!

  • These ladies have given you great advice that I can't top - all I have to add is:

When (and you will) you have a bad day eating wise or you didn't do the exercise you planned to - don't let it derail you. One bad day is all it is - don't let the one bad day and guilt about it turn into two bad days, three bad days, and then a bad week..... etc.

Good luck! Start today! You'll be happy tomorrow that you have already started the battle.

I have to second firsttimerluck here and the point about stress and a self-fulfilling prophecy. If that's you in your profile thumbnail, you are hardly a "whale" by any stretch of the imagination. I think if you get your confidence under control, the rest will follow.

When I quit smoking (3 years ago this month!) I went into a mild depression and gained 15 pounds.  I am a smaller frame person so for me 15 is A LOT of weight to gain.

I realized after a several months of feeling like crap, that no one could change this but me.  I started eating healthy and working out.  I lost that entire 15 lbs. and some!

My best advice would be to hold yourself accountable for the actions that make you feel the way you do.  If you skip a workout, or eat something you know you shouldn't eat recognize what made you do that and turn the negative action into a positive action.  For example:  I eat when Im bored.  As soon as the thought enters my mind to walk over to the pantry to needlessly snack on something, I drop and do a few pushups.  When I'm finished if I still want a snack, I choose wisely.

    Good luck OP!

  • Thanks everyone!! I'm looking forward to joining in on the accountability boards! Time to stop feeling sorry for myself and start getting my butt in gear!!

  • make sure your exercise and activities are FUN!!!

Dance around the house while you clean/dust/vaccum.  Dance while you cook fresh ingredients for dinner. Keep happy/motivational music on all the time!

Go for a jog/walk with friends instead of talking on the phone with them - or hit up the mall to just browse/walk.

if you watch any shows, make sure you have light weights next to you. when commercials come on, do some arm raises, or cruches, or pushups or SOMETHING.

I use the niketrainingclub app and LOVE IT.

Hubby and I also randomly dance at least 4x per week. He'll put on a fun song (Bruno Mars - 'locked out of heaven' lately) and we'll just jump around like goofballs. we're both laughing and out of breath by the end, and its a good way to stay energized throughout the day.

...as far as the motivation/image/attitude.  Keep thinking of all the GOOD you are doing for your body.  You're making yourself healthier and setting yourself up to have a more successful and fulfilling life. if that's not awesome, I dont know what is.
Who cares if you lose 5 lbs or 50 in 3 months. you're doing GOOD THINGS. Keep doing them.
