Where are yuo getting married / where is you BM from?

Not going to lie, I got a speeding ticket in NY (I'm from Canada) and I paid that thing right away. I'm too much of a chicken to "wait and see what happens." haha

If she got pulled over for speeding/burnt out tail light/anything, she'd likely be taken into custody right then and there.

Will she have to show her passport at boarder crossing? I'd be worried if there's a warrant out for her arrest boarder control would have that on record and when they scan her passport it would come up as flagged.

If she has a warrant, those things go state wide.  If she gets pulled over in her own county and they run her license, she will still get arrested.  Tell her to grow up, pay the tolls and that staying away from your wedding doesn't protect her anyway.

    Yep..   technology is amazing right?

PS.  If the warrant is for something as simple as toll violations, there is a good chance any cop would cite her and give her a notice to appear and then release her.  No matter what though, it is dumb to have an outstanding warrant over something so stupid.

At least knock over a liquor store or something.

$20,000 in unpaid tolls? I just can't even imagine. Isn't a toll fee like 50 cents (or at least it is around here). Even if she commutes on a toll road every day, how long would it to take to amass that much of a fine?

The longer she waits, the worse this will be. I know every state is different but I worked at the county court house for a while and in Illinois if you show up at the court house or call to schedule a court date they will quash the warrant and not arrest you. She can ask the judge for a payment plan (she may have to show proof of her income and bills so the court can determine how much she can afford to pay each month) and walk away. I know this has nothing to do with your wedding, but she needs to get this taken care of ASAP. And all PPs are correct (at least in IL..) warrants are state wide and another county can pick her up just as easily and she will be held in that county jail and wait for the warrant county to pick her up. And even if she is a passenger, some cops are d!cks and will ask for ID for everyone in the car - especially if she's intoxicated. But ignoring this will just make things worse. When her license expires she won't be able to renew it, they could suspend her license (if a warrant's been out this long they may have already), if she's driving a car with a suspended license then they could impound the car, it could affect her job (obviously depending on what she does for a living), if she leaves the state for any reason and gets picked up there she could get an additional charge for fleeing (which is a felony in IL) - my point is is that she needs to take care of this so she can sleep at night.

And be a worry-less bridesmaid and you can be a carefree bride!! Good luck to both of you!

P.S. - If cops tear in and bust your wedding - please post the video. :)

<div>Wow 50 cents down there?!? We have some over $3.00!!! But regardless of the toll amount, in IL if you don't pay the toll in x amount of days they add a $20 fine and I'm sure it multiplies the more time that goes on. This plus court costs and bonds and whatnot and that'll add up faaaaaaaast. In the several years I worked at the courthouse, I never saw a fee that large for something so small though. </div>

If she contacts the courts, they usually waive a lot of the fees in order to get paid. So I doubt she'd actually have to pay 20k. But, if she ignores it, it'll only get worse, not better. Jails are too overcrowded, they aren't going to seize her and throw her in the clink if she goes voluntarily to the courts trying to take care of it.

And she owes like 20k or something. Anyways, I told her all this and now she's freaking, so maybe she'll find some way to resolve it. I keep visualizing the cops busting my wedding even though I know that can't happen. It's a funny visual though.

[QUOTE]Cmgilpin is right that if she has a warrant it is statewide, and may even be active in neighboring states, so not going to your wedding is stupid and pointless. Everyone saying they won't arrest her over something so minor and will just cite her is dead wrong though. My sister in law and I have both spent six plus hours in the fine custody of state police, in two different states no less, over arrest warrants for single tickets that were both under 100 dollars. Both cases were actually clerical issues and the tickets HAD been paid, which they were able to determine with a single phone call. But they still had to take us into custody, process us, let us bond out, and put it before a judge to clear it up. Police officers do NOT simply give citations for outstanding arrest warrants no matter how petty the crime.

Warrents are actually flagged nationally by your drivers license. Doesn't matter if she is in Alaska and has a warrent in Florida, if she gets pulled over, it will immediately flag it up. Also, 20k is quite a lot, and they can actually garnish wages and tax refunds to pay this, so tell her to call the courthouse NOW. Often they can waive some of the fees, and set up payment plans to repay them. Also, if she ever has a credit check or background check for a job, renting a place, buying a car, this will flag it. I'm sorry, but your BM needs to sort this out now.

I think the bigger issue right now is that your BM needs to figure out how to get this all set.

Does she think she can dodge this until it's time to pass the fines onto her offspring?   FFS, she needs to take some responsibility!

Ah that makes sense. So it's sort of like paying a bill late in the sense you get "late fees" added on.

And OP: I agree with other posters that your BM's first concern should be getting her legal issues straightened out, not figuring out a way to dodge the cops. Seriously. This is not going to go away.

That is beyond crazy...what an example of a small thing escalating into a nightmare! Perhaps she could wear a disguise and travel to your wedding hiding in the trunk of someone else's car?
  • Options
So she's already been arrested and brought to court over this before ... so she thought completely ignoring it and hoping it would just go away was a good idea why?

I'm not really informed on Texas law, but I'm pretty sure that there's a good chance PP are right, she can be picked up in another county if there's a warrant out for her. Someday she's going to have to do something like renew her driver's license, or get pulled over for speeding somewhere, and it's going to come up that there's a warrant out for her, and she's going to get arrested on the spot. I'm honestly kind of surprised that nobody's just shown up on her doorstep to just take her in already, especially considering her past history on dealing with this situation.

As already metioned, she can still attend your wedding, she just needs a "designated driver".

Doesn't this affect her credit? Your BM might want to remember that if/when she needs a loan or wants to buy a house.

True.  I had a client in NJ on a speeding ticket who was held in maximum security at the county jail until he was done with court up here & extradited to Florida.  The warrant was out of Florida for unpaid child support but was enough to make him a flight risk & have him housed with rapists & murderers.<div>

She needs to call that county court to find out what she needs to do to make right & get rid of that warrant, She gets pulled over anywhere in your state and she's looking at jail time. Heck, even if she's in a car accident and it wasn't her fault, they are going to run her info & she'll end up in jail. She needs to call the court & find out what she needs to do to get this off her record & make things right.

She's either naive about being able to be arrested in any county or is using this warrant as an excuse not to be in & at your wedding.

I dont know if anyone already addressed this because I just skimmed the rest of the comments because this was a red flag. I dont know how police do it in other parts of the country but I work in law enforcement in my area and the police tend to run everyone in the car not just the driver. Especially at night. So maybe she should stick to a taxi

Did your BM just drop this on you when you asked her to be a BM? Or have you known about this for some time? Either way, I think the most important thing is to be a friend right now. You need to honestly sit down with your BM (or get her on the phone) and say that you are worried about her future. PPs are right--she will not be able to register a car or renew her driver's license until all of this is straightened out. And that's the least of it. She could really get taken into custody at any time. If she doesn't fix this, she has much more to worry about than missing your wedding. That should really be the least of her concern right now.

LOL Because "kidnapping" is SO much better.
