Wedding Recap and Withdrawal

Married Ladies: What was your reception timeline?

I have a 5-hour reception and I am trying to plan the timeline but it is driving me crazy!  So what was your timeline?  And what do you wish you would have waited to do or done sooner?

Thanks so much for the feedback!!

There is no 'right' answer. It's whatever works for you depending upon what things you're incorporating. Your DJ or coordinator should help you on this. We had a pretty simple reception, not a lot going on, so it went quickly. We had a large block of dancing, which was awesome. We actually finished up so quickly that dinner wasn't ready yet. We had to wait about 15min, which was fine. We used that time to do table thank you's on one side of the room. That meant we only had half left to do during dinner. Worked great!

    6:15 grand entrance & dancing
    6:30 first dance
    6:35 mother/son
    6:40 father/daughter
    6:45 B&G thank you's/prayer
    6:50 dinner
    8p cut cake
    8:15 open dancing
    9p ice cream bar
    10p last dance

  • Our wedding was just 13 days ago! Here is what I wished I had done differently:
My husband's family went straight to the reception hall after the ceremony. We planned on getting pictures with them but we got so caught up in the reception we ended up not getting the pictures. I wish I had made a picture schedule to give the GUESTS I wanted pictures with so the GUESTS would have known when to be there for pictures.
I didn't think we needed a formal reception line but I realized that we were so busy that I didn't actually get to walk around and talk to all or even half our guests. There were people that drove a long way to be there and I didn't get to speak with them personally.
I didn't have a plan to get my make up & purse from the dressing facility to the reception so I didn't have any lipstick on after we ate.
It took more time than I anticipated to decorate the gazebo and reception hall so several things that I bought and really wanted didn't get put up.
I sat down with a full plate of food but guests kept coming to our table and talking so I only got to eat half of my food and I only got 1 bite of cake! Even though I tried to make a concious effort to eat, it didn't happen. Try to Eat!
Here are a few things we did right:
For a 4pm wedding, I scheduled my hair for 11am and makeup to follow. If possible, get ur nails done before hair appointment or even the day before.
We scheduled the groom's men pictures at 2:30 while the bride's party were getting ready.
I talked to the DJ and photographers before I went to put on my dress dress so I knew our music and pictures would happen as I wanted so I wasn't stressed about those. Give whoever is in charge of putting the reception together a vendor phone number list so they can call about any late people or issues for you. My photographer and cake decorator are cousins. The cake wasnt there when I went to get dressed but my photographer was able to call her and I knew my cake would be there. Huge relief for an already stressful day.
Try to look around and just drink in all that is happening. I even looked around as the preacher was speaking bc I wanted to see our wedding dream coming to life!! Take the time to just be in the moment so your have memories of your great day.

    GOOD LUCK!!

  • I think the less you plan, hopefully the more relaxed it will be and th emore things might flow.  At least that is what I am hoping LOL.  I am constantly fixing my timeline.

  • We had a basic "order" in mind. After the ceremony and second line, our DOC prompted us when to dance, cut cake, etc, but this is what we wound up with:

11am arrive at venue, arrange tables how we wanted them
    1pm hair and make-up start
3pm photogs arrive, do getting ready photos, bridals and detail shots
    415pm groom and gm pics
    5pm ceremony
    520 - 545pm second line
545pm "cocktail hour" followed by buffet (I am not sure what actual time they started the buffet, I would say maybe about 45 minutes after cocktails began, but I could be way off). We started table visits at this time
730pm first dance, father daughter dance, then resume table visits & mingling
820pm cake cutting followed by dancing
    10pm end reception

  • Anyone who needs my timeline, just PM me your email... it's an Excel document so I can't post it on here. But I'll send it to you!

7:20 - First dance, followed by everyone dancing.

8:05 – Bride will change into sari.

    8:15 - BOLLYWOOD!!!

8:45 – Bride will change into third dress.
