Snarky Brides

Could I have your opinions, please?

Happy Thursday, everyone!

I was hoping to get your opinions on something.

My H and I had a tiny budget for our wedding, with little to spend on photography. We were able to get a photojournalism student to do our pictures for a good price, and she did a good job, but the results are...less than spectacular. Definitely got what we paid for.

So here I am, working on a mixbook album, and I feel a little silly. I mean, we had a wonderful day full of beautiful memories, but will we--and our families--look at the album and think "Look how happy/nice/fun!" or "Why did we even have these printed?"

Would you side-eye a niceish album with mediocre pictures?

  • We were in the same boat.  So I made the best album I could on Shutterfly.

But really, you should make it the best that you want/can.  We're all hoping to have these albums forever after all.

sidenote:  I'm planning on sucking it up, saving, and spending the $$$ when we have a kid.  I'm gonna get badass maternity photos taken to make up for the sub-par wedding ones.

That sounds like an awesome plan.

And you are both right. I love everything that was conveyed in my pictures. So what if I don't have some nifty couple-silhouetted-against-sunset or wedding-party-jumping-in-a-field shot?

<div>I've none of those.  I've got missing relatives.  As in, I know they were there but if you just went by the pics you'd never know. </div><div>
</div><div>Biggest wedding regret: not making a photog budget a high priority.</div>
  • Me too, anna. I had 8 family members show up (it was in his hometown, 3hr drive, no hard feelings there) but have no record of 4 of them.  And FIs best friend from birth was there, and we don't have any pictures of her either. Or his dad's GF.

There's also something weird going on with my dress, that I had no idea was there until we got the pics back.

Just typing this out and getting some commiseration is helping quite a bit.

  • Bunni, I love your sig picture!

I'm going to let you in on a little secret; I had a big deal formal photographer for my first wedding with lots of posed shots. They were lovely. But other than the one my mother hung on her wall, we never looked at them again. (and we have an awesome divorce, btw - we're actually great friends now) Our home was filled with photos of the kids.

This time, I'm planning more of the casual, impromptu shots like the one you have. To me, they tell a story - much more than traditional portraits. Don't get me wrong, I like them too, but my preference is capturing moments instead of posed pics.

If I were you, I'd create my album, relive the memories that each picture envokes, and be glad that you did a good thing for a student photographer by helping her build her portfolio!

This does sound great. you can also do anniversary pictures in different locations to make a killer book.
  • Did anyone else take pics? Have you seen any candids that your friends/family might have taken? They might have some shots that fill the void (show people that haven't turned up anywhere in the other pics).

  • Thanks!

We have gathered quite a bit from other guests, but those people still haven't turned up. But, one of the missing aunts did take pictures, and offered to send me her copies the last time I saw her. Hopefully they will show up in that bunch somewhere :)

<div>No one took pictures at our wedding besides the photog.  I was shocked.  I've never heard of such a thing.  I think our families are bizarre.</div>

<div>It's gonna be epic.  I'm thinking a summer wedding this time.  On my birthday.  I'mm saving for the dress now.  You don't think 8k is too much to pay for a backyard wedding dress do you?  I can always cut corners on the reception food to afford it.</div>

  • Anna - the obvious answer is Pot Luck.  I'll bring a crockpot of pumpkin macaroni and cheese.

I have the same regret.  I hired a friend as our photographer.  The price was right, and he really did get some good shots, but we also didn't get any of the family shots I wanted.  I did get some pics from friends/guests, but I really wish I had spent more $$ for a more experienced photographer.

  • I think you could save money by printing lots of pictures of food and putting them in pretty frames on the tables. I'd only give cheese strings to the guests who bring me presents.

  • Thanks!

AND ... I've decided that my brideslaves will pass out said cheese strings upon collection of the gift. I've put it on their duty lists ...
