NWR: Abandoned Kitty!

So, I was wlking down the block this morning to get my DD coffee before work (I work from home), and on the way there, spotted an adorable little siamese cat eating cat food out of a big cardoard box. Someone had written "TAKE ME HOME" on the box. I stopped to pet him, and he immediately started purring and rubbing against me. I went to get my coffe and stopped to pet him on the way back. I immediately checked my lease the second I got home. It says "No cats or dogs" or else I definitely would have taken him in. I don't know what to do - I can't find info about any local shelter, and I almost feel like he'll have a better chance of being adopted by just sitting out in that box. Arrrgghhh - why would someone do that to their pet!?? Any advice??

  • I agree with Linger. Plus, he could jump out of the box and wander onto a road. Definitely call animal control.
  • It's nice out right now, about 70 degrees, and he's in the shade.

Ugh, I want to go get him and have him sit on my desk while I work. There are so many windowsills to sit on - he'd love it in here! I would just hate to have him go to a shelter where he'd be euthanized after a few days, especially when I think there's a decent chance of someone else like myself seeing him and taking him in.

  • google a no kill shelter.
  • Update: Just called the only nearby no-kill shelter, and they don't have room :-(

  • Try a rescue group.  If they're full, just keep kitty until they have room for him/her.  No breach of your lease because technically, you don't own the kitty.

I fostered for years in an apt that didn't allow pets :)

I agree with this. You can't just leave it on the street.

  • See if there is a siamese rescue near you
  • I agree that you can't just let it stay there but since it's kitten season, most shelters are going to have a hard time taking him. Siamese rescue is a good bet, as is taking him in yourself short-term. Good luck! I dread this happening to me because I'm sure I'd wind up with another kitty...

  • Whatever you do, don't just leave it out there. Even if it's only 75 degrees out, it may get hotter. Plus, like PP said, the cat can run out into the street. Just before I got to my friends home last night, her neighbor's 9mo puppy was hit by a car & unfortunately passed a few hours later. They didn't have it on a leash & it ran around the corner. The kitten could go anywhere & since it's so small, it may be hard for a passing car/truck to see.

It IS a breach of your lease, OP you need to decide if you want to risk it.

Kitten season?? Never heard of that and makes perfect sense since I might have kittens under my deck

<div>they just mean a lot of kittens are being born around this time.</div>
  • Call animal control ASAP.  Hopefully she will get adopted... but, even if she doesn't. What's a better solution?  To have the chance of adoption at a shelter, or get smushed on the street?
  • Go get the kitten and post a heartwrenchingly adorable picture of it to Facebook... maybe you'll discover you have a friend that would be willing to give it a good home
  • Went out to check on him about 2 hours ago. Cat, food, and box were all gone. I'm hoping that means someone decided to take him in! I agonized all morning about bringing him in here. I had a cat at my old apartment (which also specified 'no pets'), but the landlord was never around. This landlord has had to come into our apt. for a number of different reaons multiple times, so I don't think i'd be able to keep the cat a secret for long :-(

Luckily, we're probably moving into a new place in Sept. and I will make sure I can have both a cat and a puppy there!

<div>I know - it's crazy. I know circumstances change and this cat's family may have found themselves unable to keep him for whatever reason. But he looks healthy, and is very cute and friendly - surely with a little effort they could have found someone to adopt him? I'm just crossing my fingers that someone else quickly saw what a lovely cat he was, and now he's hanging out in some cozy air-conditioned living room <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-smile.gif" border="0" alt="Smile" title="Smile" /></div><div>
</div><div>My BF told me I should have brought it home for a few days, and if we couldn't find someplace for it to go, I could just put it back outside. I had to explain to him that when I bring an animal home, it's forever!</div>

I hope someone good took him in. Stories about abandoned pets make me sad and remind me of a kitten we used to have. She was a rescue that a local woman found in the street during a rain storm. She couldn't keep the kitten but brought it to work with her and started calling around to some local places and one of the places she called was my aparment complex, I heard about the kitten from one of the office staff women, who was also nice enough to waive the exra pet deposit, and I went right over to pick up the kitten and take her to the vet. She had some medical issues, probably from being outside and alone so young (she was only about 1 month old) and after only one year she got very sick and we had to put her down, but she was one of the best cats we ever had, and she was FI's favorite.

So hold on. You just left it out there? You didn't find someone to take it if you can't?

<div>that is how i found my cat. i was working and a customer came in to tell me. we got them in from the cold and they were given slim jims by the people who left them. i was like.. really?.. there's a dollar store next door to us! it was crazy.. luckily they all got adopted from us workers.</div>
  • I would find a shelter to contact about the poor little guy. Or possibly see if a friend can assist somehow?

  • *points to siggy* These 3 were found literally ON the Garden State Parkway a few weeks ago-somebody dumped them on the black top and drove off, my parents found them cowering in the shoulder and took them. There was no shelter open to bring them to at the time (8pm), so my parents brought them home, and quarantined them in a bathroom and decided to keep them there until either a home or shelter was found for them to go to. My parents already have 3 cats (As well as 4 dogs ... and my parents have custody of my sister's 2 toddlers), and they just couldn't keep them.

DH and I wound up taking all 3 in the end, but if we hadn't, they would have stayed with my parents until some other living arrangement could be worked out, just to ensure that they weren't out on the street.

If the cat's still there, tomorrow, OP, seriously, call Animal Control. They will find a safe place for the cat to stay until a more permanent housing situation can be made.

*I felt sorry for my husband before I met him. Take a number.*
