Hydrangea?

So we have a somewhat tight budget for our wedding, and I cannot see paying $80 + for a bridal bouquet. I want blue hydrangea, and am thinking of just ordering a few stems from a flower shop that quoted me $10 a stem and making my own bouquet. I want to know if hydrangea will hold up well enough for me to do this, or if there is another similar flower that will work better or might be cheaper. Also if anyone else has done something similar, if you could post pics? I have fake flowers for the bridesmaids bouquets (don't worry, they are all ok with this and not offended if mine is the only one made of real flowers). Any help would be appreciated.

I used hydrangeas in my bouquet and they held up great. Although, my florist said they soak the bulbs IN water the night before, otherwise, they tend to shrivle up half way through the day.

I had white hydrangeas with green button mums and wine colored daisies... and my bouquet still looked great the following day.

I also used them in our centerpieces and as loose flowers in a couple of arrangements. I think if you treat them with the water like my florist did, they will look great.

Here is a photo of my MOH and I.

  • Thanks for the tip, and the bouquets look beautiful, as do the both of you!
  • As a florist, I come across a lot of brides who want hydrangea bouquets. Just take the time of year into consideration for this. Hydrangeas do wilt and they wilt FAST in the hotter months of the year. If you are planning to get married in a hotter month, you should put some water picks on the end of them to keep them hydrated at all times and keep a spray bottle around when you arent walking down the isle, also be sure to cut off any unwanted leaves that may be hogging all the water.

Good luck on your beautiful day!
  • i have looked around at reviews for silk flowers and i am getting light blue silk hydrangeas from afloral.
