When are Engagement pictures usually taken?

I'm having some difficulty regarding planning on when to do our Engagement pictures. We've been engaged technically since October 6, 2012 but have yet to do any photography relating to the occasion. I always thought engagement/ wedding photos went hand in hand! Am I right about this?

    Not necessarily. We didn't do any engagement photos, but if you want them, I suggest doing them soon. I always feel like if you wait, it's kind of like having an engagement party months and months later. you know?  


    What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

    We didn't do them either, but we almost did.  I don't know when the typical time is actually.  I think whenever you want to is fine.  Of the few friends of mine who took them, one took them within a few weeks before the wedding, and the other took them about six months after getting engaged but has not set a date and has no immediate plans to.

    I don't think it matters, really. We did a 20 minute session a couple months after we got engaged, since I wanted them for Save the Dates. 

    However, you might want to wait until you book a photographer for the actual wedding, since many of them will throw in a complimentary engagement shoot with their wedding packages.

    We've got our photographer im pretty sure. I am so stressed out about all of this! I have little support too...

    If you're stressed about engagement pics, skip them.

    I don't think it truly matters honestly.  Most of the girls I know used them for save-the-dates.  We originally had ours scheduled back in November, but my FI came down with Bell's Palsy so we put it off until Spring.  It was still plenty of time to use them for save-the-dates and other uses.

    We did ours in November (June wedding)so I had some for my save the dates. I've seen people do them a month prior to the wedding too, and some opt not to do them at all. Many photographers will sometimes have an engagement shoot as part of your wedding package too.

    We got engaged in July of 2011 and married in August of 2012. We did our e-pics in October of 2011 because we wanted Fall photos on Mackinac Island, MI. We could have done it later and still used them for STD's but we didn't want Winter pics.

    We got engaged in May and took our photos in November.

    We used ours for save the dates, so we had them taken in February. We also really wanted pictures with our dogs, and I wanted to make sure the photographer melded well with both of us.

    We got engaged in January, wedding is this August and we got our pictures done a couple weeks ago. We wanted to wait until Spring when everything didn't look so dead outside. Our friends just got theirs done and are getting married in Dec. It really depends on what you want I don't think there is a right or wrong time. We wanted them because we don't have many nice pictures of us together.
