Just Engaged and Proposals

What now?!

Hi everyone! So FH and I already picked our date, and we're in the process of booking our venue. The wedding isn't until September 2014..but I really want to be ahead on things! What do you all think I should do now??

Re: What now?!

  • Congratulations! Since you've started booking things, I'm assuming you've made up a budget and rough guest list already too. If you haven't, do that asap! Other than that, there's not much you can do until after the summer, apart from booking other big vendors like your photographer, DJ, caterer (if your venue doesn't cater).
  • Ditto Tiny Speck. We set a budget and made a potential guest list before we looked at venues.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • Agreed - budget literally determined every decision we've made so far.

I booked all the "big" venues around a year out - venue, caterer, florist, photog. Everyone else I'm kind of taking my time on and shopping aorund.

  • Budget and guest list were definitely the two main deciding factor of many aspects of our wedding!

  • Congrats! My FI and I got engaged 2 months ago, and are getting married next August. We've already booked the church, hall and photographer. We're shopping around now for a DJ. Once we have that booked we're going to take a break.

  • Congrats on your engagement! We had *so* much fun planning our wedding! Enjoy every second! :) We started with looking for a ceremony site & venue, and got their available dates once we had narrowed it down to the two we wanted. We didn't have a specific date in mind otherwise, so we picked one based on the dates that were open with both our venue & church. :) That was pretty much the very first thing we did. As far as bookings go, besides the church & venue, we quickly got to booking a DJ, photographer, decorator, & florist. They book up incredibly fast & I wanted to have first choice vs having to go with whoever was free. (We also wanted engagement photos done, & went with the same photographer). We booked our cake company early to save the date, but didn't make any specific choices until closer to the time. Our videographer we booked about 9months before our wedding date, & transportation we had booked 5months prior. The other services I mentioned above were booked around a year, or a little over a year to go before the wedding. As far as choices & things to take into consideration, maybe start with a guest list. I'm assuming if you have a venue in mind, you likely have a rough guest # in mind as well. Not only will this give you an idea of how many people you'll have, but lots of other decisions and bookings are based on a number of guests. After, maybe consider your wedding party? How many ladies, how many guys etc? Maybe start looking at wedding dresses, shoes, jewelry options etc. What is your vision? :) Umm, not specifically in order, but you'll want to start thinking of wedding colours, a potential theme if you want one, decor, (centre pieces, linens, decorations in general), wedding party attire, invitations/rsvps/save-the-dates, etc. There's so many fun things to think about that will make your wedding totally 'you & your FI!' My recommendation to get started is to follow TheKnot checklist. It really kept me organized & aware of things I needed to get done and when I had to get started on whatever task it was. I really really loved having it! Good luck to you! Enjoy the whole planning process as much as you can! All of a sudden it's all over & you're like me right now, counting down the final days until the wedding! :):) *J

I'm also getting married in sept 2014! Woot! We live in a big city and the church we want to go to asks that you reserve a year in advance due to the popularity. We only had two choices in sept 2014, and that was 3 months ago... So it really just depends on what you want. If you want it held at a popular spot, I would get going on that ASAP. If you aren't sure, then I think you have at least 5-6 months to finalize everything for the ceremony and reception.

Finalize a budget, plan your guest list, and plan and get the other vendors that you want.  Try to get as much done ahead of time as you can so that you won't be stressing out as the big day is coming and you don't have a cake yet!  Also, if you are going for a full on bridal gown (you never know these days) I also suggest you start shopping right away so that once you pick one, it can be ordered in with enough time for alterations.

  • I am also getting married September 2014! We have booked out ceremony/reception venue, set a budget, made a rough guest list, discussed a caterer, booked a videographer, are in the process of booking our photographer, picked out bridesmaids, and picked wedding colors.

I also have started trying on wedding dresses in stores to get an idea of what style I want, as well as bridesmaids dresses.

Like most others have suggested, I would start booking all big vendors, and start getting ideas for what style of wedding you want. Pinterest should be your best friend right now!
