I'm looking for a venue that's affordable in Central or South Jersey

  First, congrats on your engagement! Have you picked a date?  If you haven't, you should figure out what month/year you're looking at so when you contact venues, you can tell them exactly what you're looking at date wise.  That will help them, help you.  You will save $$ having a Friday or Sunday reception....and maybe even a little $ on a Saturday afternoon reception.

  
  

  I'm not sure what venue will do 150-200 guests with in a 1200-1600 budget.  We searched high and low for something that was affordable on our budget (we have about 18k of our own money to play with).  What you need to do is figure out how much you're looking to pay per person.  NJ is considered one of the most expensive states to have a wedding in.  

  
  

  Are you sure it's not 12,000 - 16,000?  If that's the case I'm sure you can find a nice venue w/in the 50-70pp price.

  Congratulations on your engagement! soontobemrsbuccheri is absolutely right! My fiance and I have a budget we are working with and were devastated when (we thought) our dream venue was out of our budget. After speaking with the wedding coordinator about potential months and days of the week, we discovered the venue was actually in our budget! Ask the venues you look at which months are considered "off season". We are getting married in November, which is "off season" and our date is on a Sunday, which is a lot cheaper than a Saturday. During my search I came across a venue called "Raven and the Peach" located in Fair Haven, NJ. http://www.ravenandthepeach.net/ It is a restaurant but has a space where weddings can be held. It is not a traditional wedding hall but I thought it was unique and considered it for a venue. I never saw it in person but my guest list consists of 150 people and I was told everyone could be accommodated. Their price per person amount was very reasonable.   I also know of a barn you can rent at Bayonet Farm in Holmdel, NJ. http://www.bayonetfarm.org/rentals.htm . You need to provide your own caterers and may need a tent because the barn might not hold that many people, but it is something to consider.
