Mother/Son Dance - help!

FI and his mom are both fairly shy and don't particularly want to dance together at the wedding  - can we NOT have a Mother/Son dance and still have a Father/Daughter dance without it being awkward?

If we do have a Mother/Son dance, what are some non-cheesy songs that are also quite short?? Ides?

Has anyone ever done Mother/Son and Father/Daughter at the same time and not separate dances?

You can definitely not do the mother/son dance if both parties are uncomfortable with the idea. I have been to a lot of weddings, and I don't recall it being a popular thing until about 10-15 years ago. I've also been to weddings where the father/daughter dance started, and then about a minute in, mom & son were invited up to dance as well. My husband and his mom danced to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" by Israel Kamakamiwo'ole. Any half-decent DJ should be able to skillfully phase out a song before it completely ends if they'd like a shortened version.
