I haven't done my practicum experience yet. I am scheduled to do it this spring/my last semester of my program. Part of my fall semester is going to figuring out where I am going to do my practicum. I also need to figure out what I am going to write my capstone paper on!

4. My favorite thing about my university is that it is in a quiet college town with unique things to do.

5. It's in a small college town with limited fun things to do haha

6. I sort of wish I went to a school with music therapy so I wouldn't have to get a second bachelors next year, but if I had, I would not have met my FH

Currently Vocal Performance, thinking about Choral Conducting for my Grad

3. If you are doing research for a thesis, what is it about and why did you pick it? (We all love learning so feel free to expand)

No Thesis right now, but I'm going to need to do some serious research reports in the next year. One on Renaissance and another on 20th Century musical periods.

4. Favorite thing about University?

Since I transferred from a large Big 10 University to a smaller satelite school for sure the best has been class size as well as the professors I've had. None of my profs at my larger school seemed to invest time in their students the way the profs I have now do.

5. Worst thing?

Commuter school mentalities. This was once a community college basically, and some people come into this school with that mindset or people will hear where I'm getting my degree and think I'm not a serious academic.

6. Anything you wish you did differently?

Honestly, I wish I'd not listened to my parents and taken music classes like I wanted to in the beginning. I didn't even audition for the music school because they discouraged me from doing so due to not being able to find a job when I get done.

7. Are you planning on getting/have a job in your area of study?

Yeah funny story. I already work two jobs in my field and I'm not even done with undergrad. I've been teaching voice and piano at a local music school for about 3 years now and then I've recently taken a Music Directorship at a local church. On top of that I'm the choral librarian for the choirs at my university. So all that my parents were concerned about happened to be pretty unfounded. People say musicians can't make money haven't met the right musicians, because we can get work if we're willing to put in work.

I thought it would be fun to hear about what people study/research in while going to school. Another Poll!

1. Undergrad or Grad?

Grad degree. Pursuing my Masters of Science

2. Major?

MS in Recreation Therapy with a concentration on gerontology and teaching. My undergrad was also in Rec Therapy.

3. If you are doing research for a thesis, what is it about and why did you pick it? (We all love learning so feel free to expand)

I just started my program, so it's a little far in the future, but I already work as a Recreational Therapist in geriatrics and that is my concentration. I will probably do something along the lines of the effects of therapeutic recreation interventions on newly transitioned older adults in long-term living care. To expand a little, I'd like to take a look at if TR interventions have a decrease in depression, and increase in socialization and overall health for residents who have either just moved in to a nursing home or assisted living facility, or who have transitioned from one level or care to another. I already know in my heart that there is a huge difference in the health of people who participate in TR as opposed to those who don't, it's just a matter of proving it.

4. Favorite thing about University?

I am doing my grad program at the same place I did my undergrad, and was convinced to come back by the professors there. They want me to teach a class in the program, but I need to be Master's level first. I am very close with the professors at my school. They are such an inspiration, and great mentors. They are the reason that I am at my current job. Working with them is a true honor.

5. Worst thing?

Long hours... My job is very physical and social... I'm on my feet talking to people all day. So at the end of the day I really can't wait to get home and hunker down with the cat and the boy in front of the TV and center myself a little bit. Going straight to 3-4 hours worth of classes after work is not all that fun.

6. Anything you wish you did differently?

I wish I would have gone back a year ago... I'd just be one step closer to graduation.

7. Are you planning on getting/have a job in your area of study?

I am already a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) and have been working as the Director of Therapeutic Recreation at a retirement community for over a year. Before that, I worked as the Activities and Volunteer Coordinator at an Assisted Living community.

I'm working on my second undergrad, as of yesterday. I have a BS in Animal Sciences. Turns out there's not a whole lot of jobs in that field, so now I'm getting a BS in nursing. At least I've already taken a lot of bio, chem, etc.

No thesis, though I'm considering getting a master's in nursing eventually. I think being a nurse midwife sounds awesome. Though I'll probably work a couple years before getting a master's because I learned the first time that education doesn't count for that much if you have 0 work experience.

Things I love? I love learning I guess, and a challenge. Something competitive like nursing in particular. I like striving to be the best in my class.

Things I hate? I can't really ever relax. When you're in school, there's always something you SHOULD be doing. You can always study more. At least with work, I can leave it at work for the most part. As a student, going to class is only a small part of my day.

Things done differently- I wish I'd taken school more seriously the first time around, and that I'd picked something else. But then I needed to make those mistakes and take time to mature to appreciate this second chance, and the AS thing was fun while it lasted.

Job in my field? Naturally, though part of what attracted me to nursing is there's a lot of options. If/when we have kids I could drop to part time, do 3 12 hr shifts, something like that. And I wouldn't be too surprised if I eventually ended up teaching or doing research rather than being directly in the field.

That it is going to be over someday!

5. Worst thing?

I am working full time and getting my law degree at night so I am missing out on a lot of the on campus organizations and opportunities.

6. Anything you wish you did differently?

Done better on my LSAT and gotten into a more prestigious program.

7. Are you planning on getting/have a job in your area of study?

I really, really hope so

I would like to clerk for a bit and then maybe go into medical defense work.

1. Undergrad or Grad?

Senior year of undergrad (although only third year of college - I'm graduating early). My applications for graduate school are due in February.

2. Major?

Communication Sciences and Disorders. Essentially pre-speech therapy.

3. If you are doing research for a thesis, what is it about and why did you pick it?

I'm currently doing my Honors Thesis on spelling development in children. We are dividing children into spelling ability levels (poor, average, superior), analyzing their spelling mistakes by linguistic feature pattern, and then proposing specific interventions for each ability level group. It's really exciting!

4. Favorite thing about University?

I love learning. I look forward to going to class and learning about different aspects of my field.

5. Worst thing?

I should have minored in Linguistics. I didn't think of it until last semester and now I don't have time. It would have been really cool.

6. Anything you wish you did differently?

I chose to go to a program very far away from my family, fiancé, and friends. I should have chosen a program closer so I could go home a little more often and be a little less homesick. But I do love my program.

7. Are you planning on getting/have a job in your area of study?

I won't be able to really work in my field until after I graduate from grad school. I am a paid research assistant in my department during the school year. During the summer I work as a caregiver for a disabled adult, as a child care worker for a family support organization, and as a cook at a bar.

3. If you are doing research for a thesis, what is it about and why did you pick it? (We all love learning so feel free to expand)- Gender, power, and pedagogy: An investigation of formal sexuality training and its perceived impact on multiple dimensions of young women’s sexual health.
The results from my results indicated that both the extent of education and the approach were related to sexual self-concept, but accounted for a small percent of the variance. Qualitative information derived from open-ended questions reflected a “strong and pervasive sense of dissatisfaction” with formal sex education among these women, and frustration with the abstinence-only-until-marriage approach and the feelings of guilt and fear associated with the presentation of female sexuality in typical sex education programs. Their voices offer rich suggestions for changing the content, presentation and timing of sex education for young women.

I chose this research topic because it was way out of my comfort zone. Every piece of former research or thesis contained context regarding autism spectrum disorders and children. This was very different for me.

4. Favorite thing about University? My professors really motivate my research and my plan on furthering my education and career. I am obsessed with this University. I cried like a baby when I graduated with my undergrad. I am so glad I came back!

5. Worst thing? Exceptionally long classes. My classes are approx. 4 hours long.

6. Anything you wish you did differently? I took a year off between my undergrad and my grad. I wish I would have gone straight through

7. Are you planning on getting/have a job in your area of study? I currently hold a B.S in Social Work with a minor in Psych. I currently work as an Autism Therapist. My current goal is to complete a pHd in Clinical Psych with a major concentration for children with autism spectrum disorders.

2. Major? Interdisciplinary Studies-Multimedia Marketing and Computing. It's a mixture of Marketing, Visual Communications, and Computer Science

3. If you are doing research for a thesis, what is it about and why did you pick it? Thankfully I don't have to do a thesis!

4. Favorite thing about University?

Having 27,000 acres to escape on to destress

5. Worst thing?

Having to live in the dorms

6. Anything you wish you did differently?

Worked more in different jobs. I've kept the same work study job all four years and I wish I had diversified myself a little bit more.

3. If you are doing research for a thesis, what is it about and why did you pick it?
Not quite there yet.

4. Favorite thing about University?
I love my on-campus job! It's flexible, pays well, and I am treated with respect.

5. Worst thing?
It's a big school so it can be hard to get out there and create a social life out of nowhere.

6. Anything you wish you did differently?
I wish I would have dropped my additional major in French sooner. I've found a great minor in an area of study that suits me better. It's great!

7. Are you planning on getting/have a job in your area of study?
I've got two years left and then a year of student-teaching so it's going to be a while before I'm in the job department.
