Wedding guest attire

My guest is a groomsmen in a wedding next spring early March. The bride states that the wedding will be formal, late afternoon 5:00 and the reception will be at a formal ballroom type place. Because of height issues I plan to bet a dress made and this is pretty close to what it will look like. The split will be just above the knee and the sleeve will be lace. Is this appropriate? I can't tell what it's made out of, but the fabric looks slightly cheap in the photo.

What kind of look would you like to go for here? This dress (with a lower slit of course - honestly, I'm not a huge slit fan in general) is fine, but it's not my cup of tea.

Thank you both. It's not really my style either, but I'm wanted to try something new. Typically i play it pretty safe and conservative. It will either be in black, navy, or eggplant. Not this papa smurf blue.

I wanted something sexy classy. Now I'm second guessing the dress all together. I really appreciate the honest feedback. I have never been to a formal ending other than my own so, I don't really know what to wear.

By height issues, do you mean you are petite? I would check out the evening wear section in the petite dept of any major dept store and you will find many options.

I think what you've described (making the slit just above the knee and a lace sleeve) with the dress in a darker color would look MUCH better. I really dislike the style in the bright blue. I think navy would look good.

I have the black Ralph Lauren one shoulder dress Maggie suggested above. It's really flattering and sexy with close fit and the slit. However, it's also classy because your top is covered and can really only see the slit when you walk. I have a lot of long dresses and it's by far my fiancee's favorite. I wore it to a Navy ball. I'd suggest that one anytime. I love that dress!

This isnt classy to me. To be honest, this dress screams Kardashians. The fabric looks like a jersey material, which would be really clingyy. Personally, I would try to only emphasize one aspect of your body, whether that be a big slit, low cut top, or tight fabric over your butt. Just not all together.

Someone wore that middle one to the work gala we attended a couple weeks ago, it looked even better in person.

OP, the dress you posted is not my style at all, and "classy" would not be one of the first adjectives to come to mind if I were asked to describe it. The alterations you have mentioned would look much better. PPs have offered some very pretty suggestions if you are second-guessing, though.

I have been reading through all the comments and have been clicking on all links posted. I will have to say as soon as I saw this one that Doeydo posted, its a beautiful dress. I just am not too sure how comfortable you are with the back part being so open but I say its one pretty dress.
