Guests asking how much to give us for a gift?

This has come up a couple of times already and I'm really not sure how to respond. A couple of friends have asked me how much cash they should give us for a wedding gift. Both time I have responded that a gift isn't necessary and that we are just happy they will be celebrating with us. The guests have then replied "well obviously I'm going to give you a gift, but I don't know what the correct amount is." At this point, I've just been like give what you want/can afford. Has anyone had this happen to them? How would you respond?

I don't remember anyone asking me this. I think you said the right thing - whatever they want to/are comfortable giving.

They are probably trying to "cover their plate" but how you handled it was good.

No, I don't know anyone like that. Your friends sound young. Your answer was perfectly acceptable. Someone who pushes the issue should be bean dipped.

Yea I thought it was very strange and I would never ask someone that. One was my fiances cousin who is 21 and another is my friend from college who is 27. Just wanted to make sure what I said was appropriate. Thanks!

You said the right thing to them. If they keep asking I'd just keep repeating it. How weird that they're asking you what you want...they should ask someone else if they really can't come up with an appropriate amount themselves! You already did the right thing

I wasn't asked about a cash amount but I have been asked what do you really want off your registry. I handled it similarly, I said that a gift wasn't necessary and if they want to give something that anything they choose will be wonderful.
