Dress timelines, help

As much as I'd love to go to boutiques to shop around right now, I know it would be pointless for me. I have been losing weight and will continue to, all the way up until the wedding. (May 2015)

Because of this I know picking a dress won't be the easiest. What is the very latest you can usually rush order a gown? If I end up waiting until closer to the day and just buy off the rack, how long do I generally need for alterations?

It depends on the manufacturer. Almost all popularly priced gowns are made from orders to China. David's Bridal makes their own gowns in their factories there. DB is set up to sell you a dress off the rack more than bridal boutiques are. What size do you think you will need? Plus sizes tend to be harder to find than average sizes. Thank you! I've been doing pretty well so far. If all goes according to my goal, my guess is I will be a 12 by the time the wedding rolls around, which would be a 14 in wedding gown size? I'm okay with buying used gowns as well.

With a May, 2015 wedding, you should shop by November at the latest, and that will already eliminate some designers. You could shop at Davids Bridal up through about February.

You can get alterations done in about 3-4 weeks. But, line up the seamstress before then.

I honestly love maggie gowns without the price tag, and was hoping to try on samples in the boutiques closer to the date. Then come home and see if I can find used ones in my size on Craigslist or borrowedbride (or whatever it's called now).

I had my first fitting the second week of August for a Sept. 8th wedding. As long as the seamstress has you on the schedule, you'll be fine.

Keep in mind they can always take a dress in 2-4 sizes (depending on detailing and structure of the dress).

maggies are expensive but places like vows bridal outlet aka tlcs hit show i found the gown bridepower.com sells maggies at discounts but they are older maggies

Nothing wrong with off the rack, older Maggie's or other designers. As long as your taste is not super trendy, many bridal gowns from a few years ago might be for sale much cheaper and its not like most of them go out of style. I got an Essense of Australia gown off the rack for 800 from their 2012 collection. It has to be taken in 2 sizes but my seamstress does that all the time.

This. I saw an episode of Say Yes to the Dress that one bride bought a dress then lost 100 lbs. She had the dress altered to her size and it ended up looking great.

Thanks for all the tips. I don't know how safe I'd feel buying a gown that needed drastic alterations but I'll keep it as a thought. I would love to go dress shopping, that's one of the things I'm most excited for.
