OWB honeymoon suggestions?

I've fallen in love with the idea of an Overwater Bungalow type resort for our honeymoon. We'd like an all inclusive, but that's not a deal breaker.

The issue is, the one's I've found are about 25 hours of travel time away (Bora Bora/Maldives). We were thinking of 7-10 days, and didn't want to spend an entire two days of our honeymoon in airports.

My internet searches aren't really finding me answers. So I was wondering if anyone knew of any, or have gone to any resorts that are closer to the US? Maybe in the Caribbean, or travel tips to cut down on travel time?

We live in Pittsburgh, PA so we have access to an international airport, but obviously we are also willing to fly from here to NY or LA.

TIA :)

Re: OWB honeymoon suggestions?

  • What type of budget are you looking at?

Flights to Tahiti from LA are 8 hours, so with 5 hours to LA, you're looking at 13 hours each way. It's not great, but it's not terrible. Most OWB resorts, especially in Tahiti, will not offer an all inclusive option. Some in the maldives will, but they are typically more expensive than anything you'll find in Tahiti. Fiji's LikuLiku Resort has OWBs and has meals included, but flights are longer and they do not include drinks.

There are options closer to the US, but the same level of luxury will not exist. Most are in Central America and are rustic. The only place that will even be close is Cayo Espanto in Belize. It is all inclusive but it's over $1000/night. Hence why I mentioned budget. Sandals is working on OWBs in St. Lucia, but I am not aware of the completion date.

  • Thanks for your reply! I'm not really sure of a budget, I guess it depends on what's offered. I was thinking under 10,000 for the whole trip. Is that reasonable?
  • It can be doable. I didn't see what time of year you are traveling? Your money will go further in the South Pacific in our winter months. As for Belize, your money will go further just in airfare! Flights to Tahiti run at minimum $1200pp from LA-Tahiti, interisland and domestic extra! You can snag flights to Belize for half of that.

  • We did Bora Bora from NJ and the flight lengths weren't bad.  If I had 10 days, I'd definitely do it.
  • Just as an FYI on OWB at Sandals.

The first to be built will be in Jamaica at sandals Royal Caribbean. They hope to begin with in the next 60-90 days with no completion date announced as of yet.

As for the ones at the Grande in St. Lucia, not any time soon. They had them approved by the government but then there was a government change and they will now have to go through the process again.

I haven't looked at it recently, but I remember it having OWB in places in Central America.
  • I'm looking to travel late June-July (wedding is June 26 2015) @kat1114 I did go to that website, but a lot of the hotels on there don't have their own websites so I was hoping for feedback on anyone who's gone there. Thanks though
  • June is peak season in the south pacific, so you'll probably have to keep it closer to 7 nights rather than 10 if you want an OWB in Bora Bora. Other islands have them, but since Bora Bora is the icon, they are the most expensive. Each island and resort is unique and offers a different experience at different price points. Your best bet, if you want to head to Tahiti, is to work with a Certified Tahiti Specialist. You can find one on tahiti-tourism.com or you can Google "Certified Tahiti Specialist" or "Tahiti Tiare Agent".
