Church wedding, no pastor?

Just curious-- our original officiant was the pastor at FI's church. He has since left that church, and it currently does not have a pastor. We are still getting married at the church, but our friend who is a JOP will be marrying us. How do you word that? Is it still honor of your presence since it's in a church, or pleasure of your company since a non ordained person is performing the ceremony? (We already have our invites printed, but I'm curious as to what is actually correct?)

Re: Church wedding, no pastor?

  • The church has given permission for this?  I am amazed!
If the wedding is held in a house of worship, you "request the honour of your presence".

They probably don't want to inconvenience people who already booked their weddings there…..especially if they are collecting a fee for the use of their facility.

  • I was very surprised, too! We had already paid them before the pastor left (just the cleanup fee for the rehearsal dinner and ceremony); FI is a member there, so no fee for actually using the church. We confirmed after he left, and then once again this week that it was OK to have our friend do it. The invites say "honor of your presence" since we ordered them awhile ago, I was just curious as to what was proper.

The location of the ceremony determines the wording, not the nature of the ceremony, or who officiates it.. You are fine.
