Travel agent- necessary?

We are getting married in Hawaii next year, it was going to be just the two of us but now it looks like MIL and her hubby plan to come as well. They will also be bringing our two kids- they were going to watch them for us. She insists on us going through a travel agent.. but we aren't staying at a hotel (renting a cottage through airbnb) and also will not be doing any guided tours.
Would it really save us on just airfare??

Re: Travel agent- necessary?

  • If you are only in need of airfare, then I say to just book it on your own. TAs earn their salary by receiving commission from hotels and tour companies, but airlines no longer pay commission. So, the TA would charge you a service fee for booking the flight. If it was a complicated international itinerary, it might be worthwhile to have the assistance, but to Hawaii, it's not worth it.

  • I would think you would be fine booking on your own.  We aren't even using a TA and we are having about 30 people at our wedding.
