Has anyone dealt with the parks lottery system?

I am trying to plan a small wedding with a budget of 5k and probably 60ish guests. It's going to be November 1st this year so I'm trying to find a nice place for both ceremony and reception indoors, and I'm thinking it will be best for me to find a place that allows open catering (and drinks). So far, it looks like shelter houses rented through parks and rec are my best bet but.. I'm really nervous about this whole "for weekend dates, you can reserve the friday of the week before but if there's someone else it's a lottery" thing. Am I misunderstanding this or do you really not know for sure if you have your venue until the week before (if you're hoping for a weekend)??

Has anyone dealt with this? I am basically ruling out all of these places because of this uncertainty.. especially considering I am having out of town guests, and it will be extremely inconvenient to change the time or place a week before the wedding because I didn't win the lottery. If you have other suggestions for places that DON'T use this kind of reservation system, but still will work with 60 guests and under 5k that would be splendid.

  • Parks shelter houses can be a great location.  I'm not sure which city you're looking at, but in Columbus, you can rent a shelter house and guarantee your date.  I've attached a link fyi .... give them a call, and I'm sure they'll help you.

I can't speak about any of the suburb parks, but I'm sure they have helpful people too.

    good luck
  • When I spoke to them a few months ago they said you can book exactly 1 year out.  I think the lottery comes into play if two people request the same date.

I'm on an almost identical budget and guest size, and we went with the Hoover Y Park Optimist lodge. It's very reasonably priced, and they allow any outside caterer, and BYOB.

  • ohnyong Forgot to mention, I think the part about the weekend dates taken on previous Friday is because they aren't open for calls/reservations on the weekend... so like if you wanted a Saturday or Sunday, you could call the Friday before (a year in advance)
  • I did not use them, but I have really only heard the lotto being used for North Bank Park. They have a line for the lotto for it. The other shelter houses seem to be in a lesser demand.

You should look in to their rules on alcohol - you have to get a permit and an approved beverage contractor. There are a number of BYO locations besides Columbus R&P's shelter houses. Let me find my list *trots off*
