Need opinions on cake design

So, my wedding is at a rooftop lounge in Manhattan.  My invites have the NYC skyline on them, as will my escort cards and table numbers.  I am going over my cake design now, and was planning to have a black silhouette of the NYC skyline on one of the tiers of the cake.  Another tier will have a metallic foil effect.  However I am wondering if this is going to be skyline overkill and if I should go with something more simple like this:

Then I still get the metallic foil effect I like (our colors are mixed metallics with all white flowers), plus the white flower ties in with our floral design as well.

Thoughts?

Re: Need opinions on cake design

  • Personally I vote for a more simple cake since practically everything else has your theme. I think when you take a theme and make every object a part of it, it reminds me of a kids birthday and not an adult wedding.
  • The simpler the better.  I really like the cake you posted and I feel like adding a skyline to one of the tiers is going to take it from modern elegance to, not really cartoonish, but less elegant (can't really find the word I want to use).

  • Thanks for the input.  Just for comparison purposes, this is sort of like what I wanted if I did the skyline cake, except the middle tier would just be gold metallic, and the small top tier would be the black dots that show up in the 2nd tier here.  There would be no flowers.

Also, if I do the 1st cake, do you think it would look too cluttered to have a cake topper due to the big flower on the side?  If I do the 2nd cake there would be no flowers or anything so I think a cake topper would work.  (We got one of those wooden peg doll B&G cake toppers from etsy).

  • I think both cakes are beautiful. If you do the first, i agree a cake topper would not look right on it.

  • I think both elements together would be a lot. I personally like the metallic. I've not seen that done before and it's really pretty

We used that exact picture to do our top two tiers, with no flower, and we will use the bottom (the dimensional layer) of this one for our bottom layer. We are doing the black ribbon probably no bow though.

ETA ok I just re-read your post the dimensional part probably wouldn't work since you are putting a skyline on the cake I read it as the skyline was behind the cake. Reading fail sorry...
  • I love the inspirational cake photo and wouldn't do the skyline. Especially since you'll be able to see it. It sounds amazing... I've been to several weddings in similar NYC venues and they are simply breathtaking!

  • I love the cake originally posted, and I love the cake BuckeyeinChicago posted.

    Either one would be fabulous.
Skyline isn't needed if you're actually going to SEE the skyline.

  • Your venue sounds fabulous! I'm trying to figure out which venue it is :)

I like the cake that you posted first. I think it looks very chic and beautiful. Not to mention yummy. I think since you will have the actual skyline, you don't need it on the cake. I also want our STD's and possibly invites to have the skyline as well!

  • @pinkcow13 we are getting married at The Skylark.  It's a new venue and only holds 80 for a traditional sit down wedding dinner plus dance floor, so it's not well known for weddings yet.  But it works for the size of our crowd and I'm super excited that it will be a place none of our guests have been before.

I will PM you our skyline invites--we had them custom made by an etsy designer and they are fabulous to work with.

  • Wow, that venue looks awesome! And I see that the catering is done by Abigail Kirsch, I hear that they are amazing. That is definitely going to be an amazing wedding, and I love that it is a new venue, so your guests will experience something new. I know I would be super excited!

Thanks, I would love to see the invites! I was actually going to ask where you ordered them from :)

Yes, the catering was one of the major selling points.  We are deciding on menus now so I'll probably have some more posts on here soon to help with menu selections.  :)
  • I agree, the foil & the skyline on one cake would be too much. I like simplier cakes. There is something to be said about simple elegance.
  • I prefer the foil look and would forgo the skyline on the cake.  That particular cake would not look good with a cake topper, IMO.  Some other metallic cakes:

  • If the theme is elsewhere in your reception decor, I'd skip it on the cake and go simple elegance.

  • I really like the cake you posted.  It's perfect for a NYC wedding...very urban chic.
  • I just went to the Skylark website and now all I want to do is nom.  Please tell me there will be mac and cheese cupcakes with frizzled kale at your wedding.

  • Lol, actually my wedding already happened so no more need for opinions on cake design.  But yes, @JCbride2015 we had mac and cheese cupcakes at cocktail hour.  When I finally get the darn disc back from the photographer i will upload food pics (and what we settled on for our cake).
  • Did you keep the first picture for your wedding cake? Our wedding is in April so I'm eager to see the luster and silver done on other cakes too!

@traditionallyuntraditional - No, it turns out that to do the first cake look, we would have had to use 24k goldleaf (yes real 24k gold--required because to be edible, you need the pure inert form of gold) which would have been a lot more $$$ than we wanted to spend.  Without the goldleaf the simple design of the first one wouldn't have looked as nice, so we reverted back to the skyline design.  To keep somewhat of a metallic effect that wasn't as expensive, they did the middle layer with a gold "spraypaint" effect.  You can see what it looked like below.

  • Oh I like that a lot it turned out really well! I like the luster gold look it's really nice too! To be honest I didn't ask my cake lady how she does the metallic thing we are going with silver though so maybe it's not as expensive although our cake is a bit more costly than the average and she even gave me a discount.
  • Zombie thread, gonna close.  (But glad we got to see the end result!)
