Talk to me about waxing

I just made an appointment to get a brazilian for the first time tonight and I'm totally nervous. Is there anything I need to do before I go? What should I expect? Is it terribly awkward or painful? I need you guys to tell me it's going to be okay...or tell me the truth I guess.

Haha the truth..... IT HURTS. Like damn. I took ibuprofen an hour before, and I wish I had taken hydrocodone. But I would do it again. My waxer did not make it awkward. It was okay. I wish she didn't rip the whole front off all at once, the mons, but I didn't cry.

  • I get my eyebrows waxed regularly, and have since I was 18. But waxing my lady area gets a big fucking HELL NO. It hurt so bad. I will never do it again.
  • I used to get brazilians all the time. The first time it was admittedly terrible, but no one warned me.

Take some ibuprofen before you go and ask if they have numbing spray/cream right when you arrive (it can take several minutes after application to take effect).

Fun fact that I would only ever admit on TK: in college, I was a model/dummy/whatever for a Satin Smooth class for estheticians on brazilian waxing. You know you're a poor college kid when you'll do that for a free wax!

It doesn't feel good to have it done - for me, it's a special occasion-only type deal.  Right now, I can't think of any occasion special enough to do it, haha.  I like it after it's done, but not enough to maintain.

  • I get Brazilians every month. Love them. It's not fun, but it's not unbearable. The worst for me is ingrowns - I would buy an ingrown hair reducer thing - I use this -

for a few days before and a few days after my wax. For me, the Brazilian hurt less than a leg wax. The embarrassment of it is worse than the pain.

Also FYI, if you do the full-on Brazilian, you get on your knees and elbows and they wax your asshole.

  • I get a Brazilian once a month/every six weeks. The first time was the worst time but it gets easier! Depending on the time of the month, it can hurt more also. Take some ibuprofen and "try" to relax. My waxer made me feel comfortable in an awkward situation so that helped too.
  • I actually kind of love brazilians. yes, they hurt like crazy, but the pay off is soo worth it. They're so expensive here ($100! Jeepers), so I haven't gotten one in a while. Shaving sucks.
    image
  • I get them done monthly as well. IMO, it doesn't *really* hurt like some people say that it does. The spots that hurt the most for me is my bikini line. I would recommend taking some ibuprofen (400 mg or so) a few hours before your first time.

My waxer uses hard and soft wax. I think that the hard wax might work better if it's your first time. Make sure that you have enough hair to wax...around .25" to 1" is optimal.

No friction (ie sex) for at least 48 hours after you've gotten your wax. You might want to wait more if you are still sensitive or bruised. I get a full Brazilian and I've never had to get on my hands and knees; there are different ways for them to wax your asshole.

Wear seamless panties to get waxed and for a few days after getting it done. The seams/lacy fabrics can rub against your skin and cause ingrowns.

Oh, and don't be shy. These ladies see labias all day long and they aren't judging you!

  • It definitely hurts but I will say it wasn't as bad as I expected and the pain basically was gone 10 mins later.  Get some cortisone cream for after if your skin is red.  Remember to breathe during it and take an ibuprofin about 40 mins before.

  • I get a Brazilian every 4-5 weeks. The first time sucks. Really sucks. Horrible. But it gets a lot easier after that. Just don't let yourself STOP and then have to go through the first time all over again - that was my big mistake. If you find a place you like and your waxer, it isn't super awkward. Just remind yourself they do this all the time.

Do you have European Wax Centers near you? That's where I go and I love it.

  • I've been bad about sticking to my schedule, but I get Brazilians every 3-4 weeks because my hair grows crazy fast. It obviously hurts, but I don't think it's that bad. Plus, the pain is over as soon as they are done. I've  never needed to take any kind of Ibuprofen or other pain reliever before or after.

I will advise that you not go the week before you start your period. I went the day before I started once, and that is the only time I have had the pain last beyond the waxing itself. I spent the rest of the night walking around like I had just got off a horse!
  • It's going to hurt. A lot. But y'know, grin and bear it. It'll be reddish for about a 1/2 a day, take some ibuprofen before you go. That'll help. Wearing underwear for the first week or so is going to feel SUPER weird.

And my waxer, for a full brazilian does NOT make me get on my hands and knees. I just lay on my side and she does the rest. I've heard of waxers making you get down into doggy style though. Ew. But hey, it's no body parts she hasn't seen. Don't be embarrassed.

    image
  • I have gotten several brazilians but have decided to stop because I get really bad ingrown hairs. It just isn't worth the pain for me.

I do get my eyebrows done every 4 weeks, though.

    Daisypath Anniversary tickers
  • PPs have pretty much got it covered.  I used to get it done every month.  The more you go, the easier it gets.  FWIW, I would much rather get a full brazillian than my armpits done.  I got my armpits done like twice and it hurt so fucking bad.  Never again.

    Tips:

Don't go the week before or during your period.

Take ibuprofen before you go (give it a half hour-45 minutes to set in)

Don't take hot hot showers for 24-48 hours after getting it done.

Reduce friction (no sex, seamless panties, etc) for 48 hours afterwards.

    Use ingrown hair cream.

Don't have any lotion on when you go, i.e, go clean and dry.

Don't be embarrassed.  She sees this stuff all day long.  If you are really uncomfortable, you can ask for a towel that they will fold over for each area.  It's really just an illusion to make you feel better about being so exposed, but it can help lessen any embarrassment you might be experiencing.

    image
  • I go about every 7 or 8 weeks. I've been doing it long enough now that my hair has really thinned out and takes awhile to grow back enough for me to want it waxed. The first time sucked...but on a pain level it wasn't beyond bearable or anything....and once you start going on a regular basis it sucks less. Some parts hurt more than others but overall it just sucks less if you do it regularly.

I've been seeing the same waxer so it's less awkward...no more awkward than going to see my ob/gyn really. She doesn't make me get on my hands and knees...although I did see a waxer one time who basically had you scoot right to the edge of the bed and then go in to doggy style for your butt if you wanted that done. It depends on their style I guess...

Ingrowns suck. I dealt with them for like the first year when I first started waxing but for the past year they've really started to get a lot better. I rarely have a serious ingrown now. There's plenty of stuff out there that helps to relieve them though. Your salon will have some options or you can go with the stuff recommended by PP's. I find it's especially helpful when you use it those first couple of days.

After a wax I usually feel super sensitive too and tend to avoid having sex with H...it can be really uncomfortable sometimes but by the second day I'm fine.

  • @tcnoble yeah, that's where I made my appointment. I picked the location and the specialist with the best reviews on yelp, so hopefully she'll do a good job?

  • I'm sorry. I can't believe so many people actually subject themselves to that. All the pain, irritation, ingrowns, and spending $100 on it? Hell to the no over here. I shave about once a week (that region) and it takes 3 minutes and no irritation. And even if I get lazy and skip a week DH couldn't care less.

It's around $60-70 in my area, but my girl only charges $25.  It's not always that expensive.

I don't shave well.  I've only been doing it recently to save money, but once I can go back to waxing, I will.

I pay $35/month. I used to get a ton of irritation from shaving. I'd have to shave way more often than once a week. Brazilians only irritate me for like 12 hours. And using the ingrown stuff, I rarely get ingrowns.

I actually didn't think getting waxed was that painful. I mean it hurts, but I was expecting it to be so unbearable. I've had kidney stones and lots of tattoos so I guess my pain tolerance is different? Who knows.

I also didn't feel as awkward as I thought I would. The chick I used to go to was really chatty and friendly and made me feel totally at ease so I didn't really think of the fact that my lady bits were totally out in the world for her to see.

In summary: Not that bad, and totally worth it.
    image
  • I don't get brazilian waxes, but I've gotten regular bikini and full leg. For me, lower leg hurts a lot more than bikini.

Take a pain killer beforehand and try not to go around your period, when everything's more sensitive. It's painful, for sure, but it's not a lasting pain. I've been tweezing my brows for years, so when I went for my first wax and she did the first strip, I was like, "Oh, THAT'S all this is?" It IS painful, but I think it's easy to build it up to be much worse than it is.

From my own experience, I have a few recommendations:

    1) If you can get a wax when your hair is about a quarter of an inch, that's the best length. Any shorter, and you're not going to get all of the hair. Much longer, though, and you're more likely to break the hair at the root instead of pulling it out. It's not any less painful, and the hairs that break end up growing back just as fast as if you'd shaved.

    2) It can be really tempting to shave after the hair starts growing back in, but what's going on is that your hair is all on different cycles. If you wax regularly, eventually all the hair ends up on the same cycle, and so you end up being hairless much longer, and it's easier to resist the urge to shave.

    3) Don't be afraid to be straight-forward with the esthetician. Did they miss a spot? Politely let them know. And don't be like me: if they pressure you to take off more hair than you want, be firm and say no thanks. (There's on esthetician where I go who I won't see anymore because every time I've seen her, she takes off more hair than I've asked for. The first time, she said it was because I'd mentioned it was my anniversary, so she was going to throw in a little extra. The second time was for my wedding; not only did she tell me, "It's your wedding, it's important!" but she charged me more for it. And I hated it. I still hate it; it's been three weeks and my mons is still half naked. I cried when I got home and wouldn't let my now-husband see me naked for two days because I was so embarrassed by how I looked.)

I went when I was ON my period and I survived.

No doggy style. The lady just had me pull my knees to my chest and did the back that way. I got really red and swollen and itchy back there only after the wax. Everywhere else was fine... Thank goodness it was a week later when we were on our honeymoon. But that was so uncomfortable for about 5 days. Idk what happened.

  • I waxed my own vagina a few times and I prefer shaving. You have to grow it all back out to wax again and just nah brah

It's going to hurt and you won't die!

Some people's hair patterns and textures are different. I have a cow lick on my labia and I could never get all the hair off with shaving and waxing takes care of it. I definitely don't spend 100 on my waxes; I go to one of the best places in the city and it's 55 before tip. H doesn't care if I skip a month getting waxed; I am the one who prefers it over shaving.

Yeah I honestly get more ingrowns and irritation from shaving than I do from waxing, even when I use brand new expensive blades and that special gel shaving stuff. (FYI, shaving with KY gel, the sex stuff, gives you a SUPER smooth shave)

I get SO MUCH more/worse irritation and ingrowns when I shave. It also takes me at least 10 minutes to shave my bikini line. And a regular bikini should not cost $100.

My husband's preferences are completely irrelevant because it's none of his business.

Anyone else just let their hair grow? I'll wax my vaginal zone when men I sleep with start turning up with bald balls. Actually no. Then I will start finding less weird men.

Why else would you get it done? You can't see it yourself so your SO seems like the only reason to get it done?
I didn't realize people had such a hard time with shaving and getting ingrowns.

Waxing destroyed my skin, now I get sugared, still hurts like hell but so much easier on your skin.  I get Brazilians every 5 weeks.  The longer you do them, the easier it gets.  First time is always the worst.

Be sure to get a good exfoliation glove that doesn't hold bacteria and a good ingrown prevention serum (I use serious serum, LOVE IT!) Exfoliate daily and apply the anti-ingrown formula and some lotion  daily and you will very, very rarely get ingrown hairs.

I love, love, love my Brazilians.  The chaffing problems I used to have, gone.  The rash I used to get on my thighs in the summer, gone.

But  the best part, let's just say...when's it's easy to find the front door, that bell gets rung a lot more.  I swear my O's got bigger and better after I started sugaring.

I have been doing this for years, even long before I met my current BF (almost 4 years together).  His attitude is "your body, your decision.  But I do appreciate it".  He always goes up the street to the pub and has a cocktail waiting for me when I am finished.

And, shaving just causes razor burn, ingrown hairs and major rashes on the bits so it is not an option for me.
