Ways to Tie in Japanese Culture

My boyfriend is second generation Japanse-American and I work at a Japanese college (in America) we are looking for ways to tie in the Japanese culture.

We are thinking of having a tea ceremony the day before
Also we are thinking of making 1000 paper cranes
And I will wear and obi

However, does anyone have any other ideas.

Re: Ways to Tie in Japanese Culture

  • My parents are from Taiwan (which is heavily influenced by China and Japan), so I will be incorporating some of the culture into the decorations for my wedding. Here are some decorations that I considered or will be using:

paper or bamboo fans as wedding favors
paper lanterns for reception decor (can be hanging or used as centerpieces)
orchids in bouquet or reception decor
origami in little jars as non-edible wedding favors
cherry blossom branches for ceremony or reception decor
a pair of mochi or daifuku as edible wedding favors

Some things that are Asian-themed but I'm not a fan of are using mini Chinese take-out boxes or chopsticks as favors. If the chopsticks are elegant, then maybe, but those take-out boxes are kind of ridiculous (they're also Chinese-American so that wouldn't fit with Japanese culture). I did see some ideas where they hang the paper cranes onto mobiles and the Japanese bride wears a western-style white dress but with an obi. Definitely research more ideas, don't rely too much on Pinterest, and ask your FI's parents! :)
