Second Weddings

IS it ok to wear a long dress for your second go-round?

I have been looking for a wedding dress online...found one I really like, but it's long....not sure if it can be altered....it's perfect.  I didn't wear a wedding dress my first time around and I was looking for simple this time around...thoughts?  and i am going for ivory...not white....

Re: IS it ok to wear a long dress for your second go-round?

  • Absolutely!!!! I wore a long dress and I think most people do.

  • May I ask if it was a formal wedding dress?
  • I wore a long formal puffy white gown with bling on it. I chose not to have a train, but that was bc I didn't want one, not bc it was a second wedding.

Wear what you feel good in. GL! :)

It was not a formal wedding dress, but I did not have a formal wedding. I was married on a beach with no guests (I eloped). Had I had a formal wedding, I would have worn a formal wedding dress. The dress should match the formality of the event, not the number of times you've walked down the aisle.

I wore a long, white, and formal dress for my second wedding!

I've never heard anything about them not being appropriate for second weddings.
  • Fifty years ago iit was taboo to wear a traditional white wedding dress at a second wedding.  It was also taboo to have a large traditional ceremony.  Couples were supposed to be married quietly.

That has all changed, thank goodness!  You can have whatever kind of wedding you want, and you can wear whatever you want to wear.  Traditional white wedding dresses are now common and acceptable at subsequent marriages.  The only slight nod to tradition is that second time around brides don't usually wear a blusher veil that covers their face, and the bride is not "given away", though she is escorted down the aisle.

Go for it!  Have a lovely wedding day!

  • This will be my second wedding and was previously married for 31 years so I'm also an older bride. I wasn't going to wear a traditional dress either until everyone here said wear what you want! I'm wearing a fit and flare dress in ivory

  • Yes, you can wear whatever you want. I wore a traditional, white long dress when I got married the second time.
  • The only time I side eye the big formal gowns is for vow renewals, not second weddings. Wear whatever you want!

  • I'm an older, second wedding bride, too. I browsed online and went with my best friend shopping, having decided I was looking for more of a Mother of the Bride or modest bridesmaid dress in some color nowhere close to white...I was conscious of the "old" rules. Well, I walked out with an ivory, tea length, Oleg Cassini gown. My bridesmaids loved it on me, it fit perfectly with no need for alterations...and truth be told, I always regretted that my first wedding was a city hall affair with my ex's best friend as a witness and a borrowed (blue print) dress. Now I can afford something more and we're going for it!

I did have one bad moment, not totally over it but I will be. My dress had come in when we went to pick bridesmaid dresses out, so I tried on again. A woman across the very large dressing room called over how beautiful the dress was...but was I the bride or the MOTHER (emphasized) of the bride?! My daughter told me later she was going to tell the woman off but she held her tongue. I was honestly shocked speechless, and very self-conscious.

  • For my 1st wedding, I was 28. I wore a simple, cream-colored long gown. The wedding was small & low-key.  For my 2nd wedding, I'll be 47. I intend to wear a fancier, champagne, long gown. It fits the tone of the ceremony & the venues. I prefer champagne because it looks better on me - not because I'm old. My 21-year-old future stepdaughter wants to be my flower girl!

SO, in summary: rules are made to be broken & anyway, today's modern brides often mix the traditional with the unconventional. That's what gives your event personality. Enjoy!

You are not breaking any rules.  Rules are there for a reason.  For instance, you must receive your guests after the ceremony and offer them food and drink.  (This is called your wedding reception.)  This is a rule and it should NOT be broken.
Enjoy your wedding.  Your plans sound perfectly proper, to me.

  • Don't even let that rude woman bother you. Who cares what she thinks? Enjoy your dress and your wedding. It will all be lovely. I'm an older bride too (58), and after much looking, I'm wearing a long wedding dress that I love and my partner loves on me.

My feeling is:  it's my wedding, it's my day, it's my dress and it's my choice. Go with what makes YOU happy!

I love that your future stepdaughter wants to be your flower girl! That is so awesome! I saw a photo on Pinterest recently where the grandmothers were the flower girls. It was so sweet.
  • This is your wedding and you get to do whatever you want!!

This will be my second (and his) marriage. My first marriage was an elopement and I did not wear an actual wedding dress. His first marriage was the huge blowout traditional church wedding and he hated it.

This time around we both know is it for us and we are doing it exactly how we want. I plan on buying a gorgeous dress myself :)
  • I am 42 and getting ready to enter my 2nd marriage October 2016. I was 17 and pregnant when I got married the first time, so we had a simple ceremony in the officiant's home with our parents and siblings only. I am marrying my first love, my first boyfriend, my first everything. We are celebrating our love as we wanted to when we were 15, and everyone was saying we were too young to be so serious. Eventually, he moved and there was no facebook then. When he finally came back for me, I was gone. We are celebrating! We are showing each other off! We are saying screw you to everyone who said we shouldn't be together when we knew in our hearts we found our match. I was married to my first husband for 24 1/2 years when he just one day asked for a divorce. Then, I see my first love. The timing was incredible. I don't know why, but now, I am truly blessed. I'm celebrating! We are celebrating! No one can stop us.  We will celebrate because it is our first wedding to each other. It takes second place to nothing.
