Re: Pinterest Snark

  • We will have mason jars, but there really wasn't much way around them being involved since that is what our reception venue serves drinks in every day. Also, I have cabinets full of them at home since I pack meals in them for FI to take to work for lunch, and for his breakfasts/dinners when I am OOT (I am currently still splitting my time between 2 citiesc each week). It was an easy "already purchased" option for vases, especially since the site coordinator told me not to use anything tall or skinny that would blow over easily since it is in an open barn-like pavilion and is often breezy. I decided to space beads out on some copper wire and use it to attach cameos with old family photos to them. Each vase and votive has a pic from each of our families on it. I loved that I have tons of old pic of my grandparents from the 30's & 40's.
I'm sure that's going to look awesome.  Plus, you already use Mason Jars, so it's kind of your thing. :)

This was a suggestion on my Pinterest.  I can't believe this is a thing at receptions.

I'm not going to lie. FI and I found one of these at Goodwill for 99 cents. We bought it for the purpose of being our Honeymoon Fund jar. HOWEVER, it's in our bedroom and it's for US to put money in. Like, emptying out the pockets at the end of the day. "Oh you have change? Put it in the honeymoon jar!" I did jokingly offer to dump the change out of my mom's purse (she always has a ton floating in the bottom) when she came to visit to make it easier for her to carry her purse. LOL.

  • Ok, so it seems pretty clear everyone hates the honeymoon fund jar. I wasn't going to do that, but I did see something for guests deciding who gets the cake in the face ( I realllllllllly DON'T want to do this, but it's the only thing my fiance has insisted on even before we were engaged) by putting coins or bills in a jar labeled "bride" and "groom". I figured it would guarantee I wouldn't get the cake since his buddies would love the opportunity to "embarrass" him. Thoughts? Still too close to this honeymoon fund idea and therefore tacky?

In my opinion, I'd say yes. While in theory, it's cute,it's still asking guests for money.  Maybe if you used poker chips or something like that.  Just a thought.

I agree, tacky. I'm not a fan of smearing cake in anyones face but if you're going to do it using poker chips is far better.

  • You know what I put in Mason jars?
    Green beans.
Yep. Mason jars as food storage.
It's like the cutest effing thing ever. I should put that shit on Pinterest and blow everyone's mind.
Using mason jars for their intended purpose?

Get out of here with your logic.

I"m not a fan of cake in the face either. If I wound up with cake on my dress, I would be seriously pissed.

The last wedding I went to she got him in the face with cake. The wedding was at hist parent's house and the cake was all over the patio so people were stepping in it and dragging it everywhere. I spent a good 20min of the reception cleaning up cake off the patio so the MOG didn't have to do it and you could tell that he was trying not to get pissed when he walked in to clean off. I don't care who gets it in the face, I think it's tacky.

    EDIT-------box

I completely agree - cake smash is trashy and, to me, it says a lot about what kind of person the bride or groom is. I've only seen it happen once and that was definitely the case.
  • Re: the OP, not only is it tacky, but who carries cash these days?

BUT. Since the thread got a little OT with mason jar conversation, just wanted to pipe up that using mason jars as wedding decor does not mean they are no longer usable for their intended purchase - just toss the flowers, put 'em in the dishwasher, and then you can load up the brine & cucumbers again to make some tasty pickles. It's not a "waste" as someone mentioned.

Full disclosure: not only I am using mason jars, but they have burlap AND lace, because my MOH was a bridesmaid in another wedding and that bride wanted to get rid of all her crap. So like 50+ predecorated jars were bequeathed to me for free. And with a $5k budget I said PLEASE AND THANK YOU FOR THE PINTERESTY JARS! However, if I hadn't had that bounty, as a family of gardeners and canners we have plenty on hand, so I may still have gone that route.

All that said, decor is not a huge concern for me due to lack of giving a shit as well as budget, plus we're doing wildflowers rather than more intricate flowers arranged professionally. So my motivation to be unique when it comes to centerpieces was pretty low haha.

I think one of the other things that drives it is that it's very, very easy to buy them in bulk. You can spend months going to various thrift stores or homegoods stores looking for cute mismatching vases, or you can just buy 48 mason jars for $60 at Walmart in one trip. Lazy brides FTW?

Indeed! I just raided my cabinets. I had tons. I'm just going to buy flowers in bulk from a wholesaler and make non-fussy arrangements. i refuse to spend $40-$60 each for that many centerpieces that will be dead in 2 days anyway. That's a whole lot of honeymoon fun (beer) money!

Same here, my mason jars are free.  My MOH threw a western themed birthday party for her dad 2 years ago and used them for that party.  She offered them to me to use, so since my wedding is a bit on the rustic side, in a barn.   My favors are also in 8oz jam jars, because they're easy.  And, my grocery store has a seasonal sale on them that's cheaper than anywhere, so if I buy on a weekend, I get double fuel points on it too.  Score!

What an awful idea. I don't want to see anyone smashed in the face with cake.

Hah! I know I rarely carry cash.

Yah, I guess it did kind of go in another direction there.  If someone is already into Mason Jars and will use them, then it suits them and I would probably think it looks cute at their wedding.  It's a waste, I guess, if someone has no intention of ever using them again and just had them because PINTEREST!

Totally makes sense in your case, and I probably would have too!  :)

That sounds like it will work well together.  I'm sure it will look gorgeous!

Haha! I'm the epitome of lazy when it comes to this shit!  There is no DIY for this chick!  LOL

  • I've been seeing nothing but mason bars on Pinterest ever since my FMIL pinned one idea for me. I'm making paper roses for the bouquets and (maybe) centerpieces, which brought up a mason jar idea.

I'm probably going to go with the idea to spray paint old cans to look like copper vases and put the roses in those. However, whenever I look up colors or ideas for that, it gives me spray-painted mason jars. Surprise surprise!
  • Not gonna lie, I got some ideas from Pinterest. Ideas that I could build on!

Like hair ideas. I wasn't sure what to do, so I went for ideas and showed a bunch to my stylist/BM and she's gonna go with those plus a few of her own ideas.

My centerpieces are candles, and I got that idea from Pinterest but I did things that weren't from there. Just ideas.

Also invite ideas. My whole wedding isn't lace - my dress is - but the invites were kinda that lacey idea. I kept going to that. The girl who made my invites {locally made because a girl I know has her own business!} went with the ideas I kept coming back to and made them really gorgeous!!

I'm not for stealing Pinterest ideas, but I do enjoy getting tid-bits of ideas to build on but stealing the entire idea? Wow no. I consider that theft tbh
  • Drink recipes, I get drink recipes from Pinterest. I had originally gone on for wedding stuff, but I was like, Really? So I started searching for booze. It's much more enjoyable and fun. Also, cookies and cake.
I use pinterest for home decor ideas.  I probably use one percent of all the items I pin, but I do use some of them.

I use approximately zero percent, but man, my dream home and garden is pimped out.
Some of the gardening stuff is actually useful. 99% of it is gardening porn and FI and I sigh over it. But I do recommend the search for booze, some stuff you would never have even thought of.

Does your dream home have an indoor lazy river?  Because I'm pretty sure that was the first thing I ever pinned, back in the beta-testing days of pinterest.

Pins I've used; How to clean your washing machine.  Store cleaning supplies in an over-door shoe storage hanger.  Store cables, remotes, and chargers in an over-door shoe storage hanger.  And, a couple years back I was unemployed over Christmas.  I spent a lot of time crafting christmas ornaments I found on pinterest.

And now I want a lazy river in my house.

The gardening ones are really good, and I have used several of them (stacked terracotta pots up a length of rebar, anyone?), as well as pinning for info's sake.  Crochet patterns, yes... refreshing a sweater with some artful cutting and sewing... I guess maybe not ZERO percent.

Does any one else get the pop-up ads for an LDS match site that say things like 'because no one wants to spend their life in the singles ward' and 'because no one wants to grow up to be a crazy cat lady'?

...and I'm over here like 'damn, I want to be a crazy cat lady'...

I haven't seen the ad, but a friend of mine, who converted to LDS in California after her divorce (to be fair they were very open and welcoming to her and her 3 kids), met a guy on the LDS dating site, and they got married like 2 months after they met and she moved to Utah where he lived.  They seem to be doing OK, but she said the LDS people in Utah are kind of not nice to her and her family.

The only things I know about LDS are that they're into geneaology and prepping for the end of the world.  I'm a big fan of these.  I actually read several LDS blogs back when I was unemployed because both these topics interest me because I'm a freak.

This I know because they have a really good repository for all of North America. My grandfather used it when doing our family tree even though we are Canadian. If anyone touched down in North America in the last 300 years, they have records of it and they can help you search for your family histories abroad as well.

When I was in high school I had an LDS friend, and her family had an actual basement (which was super rare in California), with an entire "panic room" complete with enough canned and dryfreeze food to last a few years.

Also I'm pretty sure Ancestry.com is owned by LDS folks.
