Can my Fiance and I walk down the aisle together?

Back story: My parents haven't decided if they will attend the wedding or not. Last I heard, my dad mentioned to my sister that if I specifically asked him, he would be in the wedding party. Long story short, they told me they would have to think about attending when I announced my engagement back in January (FI talked to my dad about two months prior to popping the question so they knew, it was courtesy to call them since they didn't attend the proposal). If they have since decided to attend, they have not told me. I guess I have to go and ask them again....which I think is interesting since it was them who were undecided, not me. Anyhow....

True Question: If my dad does not attend, or attends but does not wish to escort me down the aisle, would it be okay if my FI stood at the alter with his BM in the beginning, my BM and his GM walk together down the aisle, doors close, pause, doors open, my MoH is behind me (train police)....FI sees me, pause, FI walks back up the aisle to me and we walk down to the alter together?

I'm not against walking solo, more than strong enough emotionally to not need anyone to escort me or give me away (which my maternal grandpa was planning to give me away should weather allow him to attend).

Just trying to think of Plan B, C, and D haha.

Plan A: Dad decides to attend and escort me...possibly even give me away

Plan B: Grandpa escorts me and gives me away

Plan C: I walk solo, no giving away mentioned in the ceremony

Plan D: FI walks up the aisle and we both walk together, no giving away mentioned in the ceremony

So in the end ladies (and possibly gentlemen), are all plans kosher and proper? I am not looking for people to pick one plan vs. the other but more to make sure that Plan D is something that can be done if it came to that.

  • Haha, funny how it turned Plan D into D: . Ironic :P

  • You can have whomever you'd like walk you down the aisle, or you can go alone.  If you want it to be a parent, Grandparent, sibling, cousin, friend or your FI then ask them.  If you want to go alone, you're in the clear too.  All of your above plans are fine

    Yep, this.

  • You don't need to be "given away". You can totally leave that part out of whatever you decide. Good luck.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with your FI escorting you down the aisle.  The person who escorts you is not the same as the person who "Gives away the bride."

When I was married, my father had died, and my uncle escorted me.  When the question "Who gives this woman..." was said, my Uncle responded with "Her family does."  If you want to have this in your ceremony, any member of your family could say this response from their seat.  It can also be skipped completely.

Thank you :). I asked my father over the weekend and he said he would be willing to walk me down the aisle but not give me away. I will talk to the pastor and ask that it not be in the ceremony....or I am sure the rest of my family will speak up if it had to be in the ceremony.

    Thanks everyone!
  • I guess religious weddings has someone giving away the bride ...

For our wedding, bridesmaids and groomsmen walk in and part off.
    Then FI and his mum
    then my mum and I
My dad isn't around, or else he would be.

But honestly, go with whatever you guys wanna do :)

    To the bolded: Not always.

I personally would skip this, but if the bride wants to do it, it's up to her.

Oh really? I didn't know! I always saw it with weddings that were typically religious. Good to know, thanks :)

It is entirely optional in most protestant churches.  The word "obey" does not usually appear, either.

  • Its a new age where walking alone or with a fiance is totally acceptable.

My finace and I area, and are using a phrase of giving ourselves to each other not our parents giving us away.
