Including 4 kids in ceremony

FI and I are looking to include our kids in the ceremony.

4 year old boy
12 y old girl
13 y old girl
15 y old boy

The only thing we've really agreed on so far, is that the little one can act as ringbearer.

We are trying to stay away from having bridesmaids/groomsmen, at least, for now.

Any other suggestions on how we can incorporate the kids?

  • You could have the oldest boy and girl be ushers and the 12 year old do a reading.

Outside of roles, you could have them be part of the processional (walk with their grandparents or together), have them sit in the front row, give them corsages/bouts, let them come along to "getting ready", have them sit by you at the reception... stuff like that.

Bridesmaids and groomsmen would be the obvious choice. Or they can give a reading?

I know, but we're trying to stay away from that.

Readings are a good idea too.
  • My 2 children (13 and 15) are walking me down the aisle, and then will stand with the rest of the wedding party members. Neither of them feel comfortable with speaking in front of a crowd so readings were out. They are excited to "give me away" to their stepdad (I don't love that symbolism, I look at it more that the kids and I are a packaged deal).
I like the idea of them escorting you down the aisle!

I was thinking of having the older boy walk with me too, but I don't think there will really be a "walk".

The 2 girls are pushing to be flower girls... and that may be what we're going to do

We won't be having a processional, it's going to be a very small private wedding.  :)
  • Are you having a ring exchange? The oldest could be the one to present the rings.

So, if the youngest is ringbearer, the oldest would take them from him and hand them to us?

Yes, and its pretty common for someone other than the RB to present the rings.  I haven't seen a wedding where the RB actually has the rings on a pillow coming down the aisle- they're usually in the best man's pocket.

Yeah, this should answer it. I think it's best to let them do what will make them happy and what they're comfortable with. If a 12 and 13 year old want the opportunity to be flower girls, let them.

If you're not having a processional, what do you envision your ring bearer doing?  The ring bearer generally carries the "rings" (in quotes b/c they don't usually give little kids the actual rings) down the aisle during the processional.  If you aren't having a processional at all, I guess I don't see the point?
That's true I suppose... FI just has his heart set on seeing his son do it.

Does his son want to do it?
  • If they want to be flower girls, and your FI wants his son to be a ring bearer, and your son could walk you down the aisle, and you don't know where you're getting married, why not just have an aisle? It doesn't need to be a cathedral, just a way for people to enter the space.

LOL his son still thinks getting married means kissing. I don't think the kid will care either way... and honestly, I personally think he's just going to run down screaming daddyyyyyyyy and be a pain about the whole thing... in a cute way, of course... making everyone laugh.

Until the kid starts whining to his dad to entertain him in the middle of our vows... at which point, I'll no longer be laughing.  :D

We have no kids tonight (we only have zero kids in the house twice a month) so we're going to hash some things out without being interrupted. We've been talking about bits and pieces here and there, but now's our time to have a couple hours of really getting into it.
