Seating chart/name cards

Not quite sure how to do this. Even though our reception is small with only 48 total seats available, we do need to do a seating chart. Do we create a chart with names and also name cards at the place setting? Can we just make name cards at the place setting? Do we make cards that they pick up that direct them to the table with the place setting card too?

Please advise. We're still 2 months out so plenty of time, but I just am not sure how to approach this!

I agree with @geebee908. Put the table number in the corner of the escort card and put table numbers (either cards or some other visible means) on each table. Make sure the tables are in sequential order so they are easy to find.

It's best if you just assign tables and not actual seats. It doesn't matter if Joe is sitting next to Bob as long as Joe and Bob are at Table # 4.

Ditto PPs. Assign tables, not seats. I always find it awkward when I'm assigned a specific seat.

We did a seating chart because a. then we didn't need a separate table for the cards, b. it seemed like less work than making a billion little cards, and c. it was much easier to set up. For a smaller wedding, it may not be such a pain to make individual cards. (We also did a buffet, so there was no need to note the meal choice on the place card.)

Thanks all. Ran this by my fiancé last night and he thinks it will work. His father is our only concern, so FH will talk to his stepmom and grandma about bookending his dad when they sit down at the table.

As for meal choice, @ahoywedding our reception is at a restaurant and people select their entrees at the dinner, so no need to note meal choice.

You could do either a seating chart or cards or both, but if you do a seating chart by itself, depending on the layout of your venue, your guests might end up crowding around the chart trying to figure out 1) what table they're seated at and 2) where the table is. If you have cards, you eliminate at least the first one if you put signs or other indicators on the tables of which table is which.

I'll need to check with our venue but I believe we have a table outside the doors of the private dining room which would be perfect for the escort cards. Thanks for the tip on the seating chart @jen4948, I think escort cards will be the way to go.
