Immediate Family DW, Party Upon Return

Hi all!

Please help with some best practices for our special day. We are having an immediate family only DW (small 15 minute service on a beach, nothing formal) and a big party upon our return, which we are hosting.

We wanted to avoid having a party, but friends and family are insisting we have a celebration of some sort. Our thought is to keep it casual with a taco guy and full bar, without traditional elements such as first dance, cake cutting, etc.

Our parents want to throw us a shower, but it goes against traditional etiquette since no one outside of our parents and siblings will be present at the actual ceremony.

What should we do?

  • Just decline the shower!

DW is fine. Though you do need to host anyone who attends after the ceremony.

Celebration party later is fine. As long as the guests know you are already married and you aren't re-enacting your wedding, enjoy!

    No to the shower.
  • Decline the shower, your party sounds perfect! Don't include any elements that hint of wedding (vow "re-do," wedding party, etc), but it sounds like you're hosting it well. And tacos are always a good idea!

Do make sure that whoever attends your DW is hosted with at least a meal after the ceremony (I know punch & cake receptions are proper etiquette for at home weddings, but I feel like guests traveling to a DW should receive a full meal).
  • Decline the shower. The party sound fun!
  • Now THIS is what a destination wedding should be!  Great planning!
