  @banana468, I totally understand where you are coming from. My mother was hospitalized several times before her death 15 years ago. She told my brother and aunt that she didn't want to bother me so not to tell me. Finally, my aunt called and told me how ill she really was. I lived 12 hours away by car. I was devastated. I understand the need for privacy and not hovering around the hospital but even routine surgery can have complications so I think adult children should know when a parent is ill/hospitalized. I guess this assumes a good relationship between all parties. 
  
  I hope your mother has a quick recovery and you can go visit soon.
