Wedding Woes

It's...Wednesday!

Happy Valentines, Gal-entines, Ash Wednesday, Mardi Gras hangover day, and last but not least, Hump Day!  ;)

DH caught my cold.  He's been salty AF all week and this helps none of it.

DH's cousin proposed to his GF either last night or this morning.  :D  YAY for another Conn wife in the family.  We are all a fun group.

I need to put together my kids Valentines gifts while they're at school.  I might run out and get Mr. Cranky-pants something, but we'll see.  He's been such a pill.

DefConn gets his new frames today.  :)

Re: It's...Wednesday!

  • Valentine's isn't a big thing for us; H isn't in to it, so he specifically asks me not to get him anything. Actually, no he asked me when my back feels better to move some things into my office and pick a list of houses I want to see.

I'm back at the office at least for a little while today. I'm on the mend but still uncomfortable so we'll see how long I last in crappy office chairs.

  • Those are cute @kvruns. My kids loved that quack quack book.

My my kids are out the door with their valentines and said little boxes in tow. My daughter's is just a shoe box (from shoes grandpa bought) colored with a sharpie and some stickers from a Home Depot build. Whatever. I'm starting to hate the one upping and all the little shit toys and candy they bring home almost every day.

6let asked what I got Dh. I told him I'm going to tell him I love him. 6let was unimpressed. Whatever. The kids are getting a book and a cookie.

Dh dh and I are going out to dinner alone Friday. McCormick and Schmidt's here we come.
  • @mrsconn23, yay for engagements!
@trixiejess, I would have done the same.  This day is unimpressive to me.
@charlotte989875, hope it's not too too uncomfortable. Glad your back in the swing of things
@kvruns, I love when you post pictures. He's so cute!

Nothing to glamorous today. Yesterday I went to our tax specialist (Jackson Hewitt) and told her I didn't want to enter all my H's trips/lodging/meals since last year the girl at HR Block said it wouldn't matter since he didn't meet the minimum. She looked at his taxes last year and was like "nope. He benefited from those last year".  If H sits down and enters this on his own, it will take 4 weeks.  If I do this, 4 hours.  So guess who has the honor of entering a years worth of trips into a log?

I didn't give H his Vday gift  yet.  I'm going to subway to pick up cookies and I want them at their freshest, so probably tomorrow when he comes back from work. Subway cookies are the best.  OR - if I'm lazy tomorrow, maybe steak 'n shake drive thru.

  • I asked DH last night if he'd be upset if I didn't get him a card.   He said he didn't get me one.   Score one for a couple on the same wavelength!

It's Ash Wednesday and while it's not a Holy Day of Obligation it's still a day that we Catholics have to fast and avoid meat.   I'm drinking my coffee black, having small meals and tonight's dinner will be something easy and meatless.  We cut into the Valentine's Day Carvel Cake last night and for now it stays in the freezer taunting me.

I woke up at 4:30 and couldn't get back to sleep.  Today both kids have Valentine's Day parties AND it's the 100th day of school for Chiquita so she's dressed as an old lady with curlers in her hair and eye liner jowl lines and crow's feet.

    I want a nap.
  • @mrsconn23 congrats to new (official) addition to family :)

    @kvruns Such a cutie :) those cheeks!!

@charlotte989875 Agreed what @TrixieJess said, your office should find a way to accommodate.

@CharmedPam A&W use to have the greatest cookies. Soft, chewie and GIANT chocolate chunks. They were amazing. Subway is a good second up ;)

First of all, when did I get this big?

Second, I am lacking sleep. Went to be about 9:30-10pm {later than usual} and then woke up about midnight, tried to fall asleep, gave up and went down to sit with M for awhile.
Eventually I fell asleep around 2-230 but dreaded that alarm this morning :(

I'm basically assuming this is a normal day, because that's what M's insinuated. I guess we're actually celebrating when we do dinner on Sunday ... I got him a card, but I've decided to wait to see if he even did that today and if not then I'll just wait.

I'm toying with the idea of giving up ordering out for Lent. We don't typically do it {we're not Catholic - Cat a holic maybe, but different thing lol} but I feel like this is something we should do. We order food a lot *sigh*
  • I got up early this morning to make H breakfast in bed.  It was something I used to do every Valentine's but didn't the last 2 years.  One because we were leaving for vacation super early and last year was because I was pregnant and sleep was needed!  So I got back to it this year.  We will exchange cards later.  We also have gifts this year - we don't always do gifts.  H usually gets me flowers too.  I got a card for DD, though she won't know anything!  I did not do cards for DD's daycare friends, they are too young!  I don't even care if I end up being "that mom" who didn't do anything!  I provided Puffs for the class "party"!

I will probably head to noon mass for Ash Wednesday.  There is a church about a 7 minute walk away.  After work is yoga, then home.

I've been working on our taxes a little each day.  This morning I got to the part where you can enter your electric car purchase on the Fed taxes (I use Turbo Tax).  Being that we bought a 2013 car, we were certain the credit would already be used up, since it goes by how many were made/sold or something like that.  But we somehow are still getting the full $7500!  H thinks it is wrong and I'm skeptical.  But I'm going to pay a little extra to have a tax professional look over the taxes and being "insured" by them in case anything goes wrong!  I still need to work on our state taxes.  There is something wrong with my W-2 because I was on disability and received full pay for the first 8 weeks, some of my pay came from a 3rd party.  But it was all taxed like normal, so I just need to figure out how to show that!  Otherwise we owe 3500!

Tomorrow is back to a document review about an hour away.

  • I'm so tired today!  We had an event last night at a local distillery (which was really cool) and I was in the kitchen for training.  I didn't get home until around 12:30 and I'm pooped.

No real plans today.  The funeral was scheduled for Saturday, and we were able to push our DC trip back a day.  If you're ever considering buying Expedia's Travel Insurance - don't - totally not worth it.  We had to call Delta ourselves to change the flight and when we went to change dates on our hotel (less Friday - add Tuesday) they cancelled the whole reservation instead of giving us the one room left on Tuesday and now we're staying at a hotel I didn't have a lot of time to vet because someone else scooped up our days while I was on the phone.  Or so says the guy from Expedia.

The only positive is I was able to get roundtrip private car service from the airport for about 1/2 using my Expedia points.

  • @misskittydanger, wait - take out only?  Can you go to a restaurant and sit down and eat?  Or like, take out being anything you did not cook yourself?
@oliveoilsmom, good luck with that! where is that "did you purchase a new car this year?" on the turbo tax?  I use it too (basic) and can't find it.  Everything I google tells me to go here and here and here....and when I do that - there's no option. ???

  • @CharmedPam Take out/delivery. {skip the dishes lately is our go-to lol!} We are 100% guilty of doing that and too lazy to go to a restaurant often.

I hear ya.  Especially in the winter.  Leaving the house is hard to do.  But if I'm hungry enough, I'll go.  We eat out at places more than we order in! I rarely do delivery.

Worst part is we have food. We're just super lazy lol and most of the time we order late evening *sigh*

I bolded the real V-day gift you are giving to your H ;).

My H and I aren't big into V-day either.  We have a tradition that we go to a "gourmet meal to go" kind of place, ie Whole Foods, and have V-day dinner at home.  We might even skip THAT today, lol.  It's just been a lot over the last few days.  Mardi Gras season ended yesterday.  Our next-door tenants moved out.  We just want to go back to normal life and not do anything else special, lol.

From the early days of being colonized by the French, then the Spanish, then the French again, NOLA is still a SUPER Catholic place.  I'm not Catholic, but am kind of forced into the Lent thing food-wise because of it, lol.  All the restaurants, and even fast food, have Lenten specials.  Everything is fish, fish, fish, fish, fish, fish lol.

Back to the next-door tenants.  As some of you may remember, they didn't pay their rent this month and we served them with a 5-Day Pay or Quit notice last week.  On the bright side, they just moved out without any prompting or court action from us.  So big YAY on that.  On the down side, since they knew they weren't getting their security deposit back and were moving out in a hurry, they left us with a big mess to clean up.  Ugh.  Though nothing malicious.

But they don't have their own car and a friend from where they used to live (WY) came down to pick them up and drive them back there.  So they basically abandoned almost all their belongings in the unit.  Including food in the fridge and freezer.  Plus there is a LOT of touch up paint needed and two holes in the wall to fix.  The baseboards are filthy from the two dogs they had.  Though, other than that, the unit is relatively clean.  Oh.  Those poor dogs :(.  The innocents.  They were turned over to the SPCA.

Don't get me wrong.  We would rather have been left with a unit that could be turned over right away.  But here are at least some perks left behind:

    • 60" big screen tv -- my H is going to replace the 24" one in our bedroom with that one.  We'll be able to sell our 24" one for probably $60-$80.  H was so excited, he literally grabbed a tape measure...that they also left behind, lol...to check out how big the tv was.
    • Our coffee maker broke a good while ago, so we've been using a cheapie one that my H used on site for our last renos.  Their coffee maker is better, so we're snagging that and will store away the cheapie one for whenever our next reno is.
    • Speaking of coffee makers, they also have a small Keurig!  That is my one happy item, lol.  I've always wanted to try and see how I like one.  I'm going to take it to my office.
    • I cherry picked and priced out a few other items that we can probably get a total of $200-$300 for.  Artwork.  Boxed DVD sets.  Waterford champagne flutes.  That kind of thing.  I could probably make even more than that if I wanted to sell every, little thing.  But I'm not spending that kind of time and will chuck/donate most of what is left.  My H suggested we have a garage sale, but I don't even want to spend my time doing that, lol.
Disappointments.  We were hoping to score a couch and a microwave.  They have a microwave, but it is a cheapie underpowered one.  Plus the inside is dirty.  So it is curb bound and we will just stick to the slowly dying one we have, lol.  We hate our current couch, but there was not one to be had.  My H said, as far as he knows, they've never had a couch.  Weird, but okay.  Oh well.

  • But then @short+sassy, when I'm on solid foods again, I can't  have him take me out for dinner if i say "happy valentine's day.  Here's your tax documents!"

Sucks about the tenants.  H moves out at the end of the month and we're hiring a service to clean it so we can get the deposit! But if there's no motivation....

The tenants we had in this unit before them was one of my nightmare cases.  Now that I'm thinking about it, we paid a neighbor $50 to clean the floors.  Which literally had a layer of sticky grime on all of them.  That was money very well spent.  Hmmm.  Maybe we could offer that same neighbor half of that, just to clean the baseboards.  I hate cleaning baseboards and these will need a good bit of elbow grease.

  • A couple of weeks ago I interviewed for a position and was told that I'd hear something "one way or the other" at the end of last week. I didn't.

Then today I saw that the job was reposted yesterday.

    Mine, too.

I have asked and continue to ask for a cleaning lady as a present.

We're getting ready to hire someone to mow our lawn this summer - why can't we hire someone to do the inside dirty work?

FWIW, an online friend on a different board has been hemming and hawing for years about hiring a cleaning service.  Her and her H make a comfortable income, but are frugal.  They both have demanding careers that sometimes have long hours.

They're new parents and the LO arrived a couple months ago.  That was the straw that broke the camel's back and they hired a weekly cleaning service.

She says it is the BEST.THING.EVER.  And they should have done it a long time ago, lol.

They probably can, if I ask. Right now I think it's too soon to know how it's going to play out. I brought ice packs with me and have traded to get a better chair so it's been manageable.

We got one starting end of October I think and it is great. It is bi-weekly and I honestly don't mind paying for it. Now granted it hasn't motivated us to clean more in the interim like I hoped it would but it is better than what it was before.
  • @short+sassy do you have to wait any sort of time before commandeering/selling their stuff or is it assumed yours as of the end of the 5 day notice?

Those I know who have one love it.   I think I may need to just do it and see what DH thinks.    I'd also love to know if I can get them to tidy kid crap too.

It's overwhelming the amount of STUFF to do to keep a house in working order.
  • I'm constantly disgusted by our house .... I wanted to do some heavy cleaning this weekend, but I felt like crap.

We did Valentine's Day last night (and will probably do it again on Saturday).  I got some sad news from a student yesterday (I'd rather not share - it's pretty sensitive).  So, I had a good cry and we had candlelit dinner.  But it wasn't the same.  So, 2.0 will be Saturday night.  It's not too lovey on Ash Wednesday.

I have to admit, when I first heard that Valentine's Day would be Ash Wednesday, I was a bit pouty.  But I admit, it's making for some good jokes.  This is my favorite -

I have a love / hate relationship with Ash Wednesday.  As @banana468 said, it's not a Holy Day of Obligation.  But DAMN people come out of the woodwork for it!!!  Our school is next door to a church and we share a parking lot with them.  Usually it's no big deal, but since everyone decides to go to church on Ash Wednesday, my assigned spot was taken.
