She is a woman several decades ago who claimed to have had visions/visits from the Virgin Mary and a shrine was built where these visions happened. Eventually her claims were refuted by Rome, but the shrine is still up and running as a functioning church (while it claims to be Catholic, it actually has no connection with the Catholic Church).
Apparently it caused a huge ruckus in the Catholic community several decades ago.

I just found out she's H's great grandmother (Mom's mom's mom).
No joke.
I found out from a family friend who knows someone who lives in the area where this shrine is. H didn't even know this. We looked more into it and sure enough, the name of one of Maryann's daughters and the birthdate of the daughter lines up with H's grandma.

Idk whether to be scared or to laugh lol.

Obviously I'm not even married yet, so I'm not planning a vow renewal, but with all the talk about vow renewals on the other boards, I was just curious as to how a Catholic would have a vow renewal if they wanted one.

I'm not talking about convalidations... completely different thing.

But just out of curiosity, if a Catholic had a Catholic wedding, and years later they wanted to renew their vows, would this be a religious thing, like in a church with a priest, or could they do it anywhere with anyone?

Renewing your vows doesn't seem to really fit in with the idea of marriage in the Catholic church, so it seems kind of weird, but I've never heard that it's prohibited or anything. So if a Catholic did want to do that, what would be proper decorum?

Hi all,
This is my first post and I see that things can get a bit heated here, so please understand that this is not meant with any disrespect.
I was raised a Catholic, but my family stopped going to church after my Communion (I was about 10yr old). I am starting to get involved with the church again but have a LOT of brushing up to do. I cannot remember anything about the teachings! Only some of the prayers. I am working with the church to find out what classes I need to take to get back up to speed, but in the meantime, as an adult, I have a few questions:
1) Are all Catholics against homosexuality and gay marriage? Again, please be kind and know that I am just looking for the Catholic perspective.
2) Are Catholics prohibited from having recreational sex?
3) My priest wants FI and I to think about what will be different for us after we become a married couple. FI and I live together and are taking care of my adopted son together. How do you all view this as Catholics?
Once again, I do not mean to offend anyone. I'm just looking to learn. FI was also raised Catholic but, like me, stopped practicing as a child.

We really want my SIL (DH's sis) to be the baby's godmother. My in-laws (MIL, FIL, & SIL) will be in town for a few weeks over Christmas, but this is the soonest we can get them here - they're coming from overseas. The only person from my family who will be around post-baby is my mom, who is planning to fly in from the east coast for a week just after the birth to help out. We're not even sure what to do about a godfather, as there won't be anyone who will be in town at all who could fit that role-we would choose DH's cousin, but he is also overseas and won't be coming to visit. (I only have a godmother, so I am not sure having one and not the other would actually be an issue.)

Ideally, I'd have liked to have the baby baptised much sooner than three months old, but this is the best we can come up with so far. I have a message in to our church to find out the specifics of what pre-baptism class is required, and what the church's baptism schedule is and what other info/requirements we may need, but when we spoke with the priest after mass yesterday, he kind of looked at us funny when we said we were asking about a December baptism for a September baby.

Does anybody have any experience with a situation like this? How did you handle it? I'm sure we'll get more info when we actually meet with the priest for specifics (we didn't go into great detail about the whys and the international travellers and such after mass), but I am just curious what others may have done.

I just viewed the website of A Simple House, a Catholic charitable organization named for memorial contributions in my brother's friend's obituary. They offer an explanation of their mission of "friendship evangelization," which I find to be beautiful and wanted to share:

"Christ is transmitted through relationship with others, and human relationship is a necessary precondition of conversion. God has willed that we know Him through each other.

"A Simple House believes that the most effective evangelists of history have worked through personal relationships and friendship evangelization. In this sense, we do not try to argue someone into the Church. We strive to love them into the Church. When Christ is our intimate friend, it feels natural to introduce another friend to Him. If Christ is not our friend, we are talking about someone we do not know and an awkwardness results. Friendship evangelization starts by developing friendship with Christ and ends with a natural, effective, and loving evangelization." (emphasis mine)

Their website is http://www.asimplehouse.org/index.php if you'd like to read more.

Hi everyone! I'm already civilly married (July 13th) but my husband and I are having our Catholic wedding ceremony in Italy (where we live and where he is from).

In Italy, they post bans outside of the church, do we do this in the States? Or would this be similiar like when it is announced in the church bulletin?

And were you "questioned" individually by the Pastor or as a couple?

I was just curious because we met with the pastor yesterday and I wasn't expecting a full on interrogation.

Hey ladies,

In a complete whirlwind of events, I applied for a job in PIttsburgh (where my Fiance lives - I'm in Buffalo, NY). I interviewed for the position on Monday and had an offer Monday night. I start there on August 27th. I'm excited about the job and the move, but at the same time I am terrified.

I am driving to Pittsburgh with my parents tomorrow to look at a few different places. I'm hoping that by the end of the day...

Regardless of all of that, I am nervous and sad about "closing up" here in Buffalo. I knew I would be doing it, I just wasn't planning on doing it until closer to the wedding in May.

Because of the short time frame, I am sort of freaking out about the move. Getting everything done, having a place to live, adjusting to a new city, etc. Not to mention wedding details. (although thankfully most of that has already been planned and taken care of).

Long story short, I'd appreciate some additional prayer support to guide me through this transition in my life.

Thanks!

My mind wandered to this question a couple nights ago when I couldn't sleep, and it's something I'd never considered before...

What do you think would be the Church's position on girls/women who have severe intellectual disabilities being placed on contraception? When an individual has the mental age of a child, she cannot give consent to sexual activity, so would contraception be for her own protection in case she is taken advantage of? (I learned in school that such assaults unfortunately probably happen more than is realized.) Would it be sinful for a caregiver to place such a woman on contraception with only this intent? Or does the role of hormonal contraceptives as potential abortifacients override the protective intent?
