How did you/are you going to handle the timing of the yichud and all the other things going on? We're doing pictures before the ceremony, and then a receiving line after it at the ceremony site, before people head over to the reception. And while we'll do a lot of photographs before, we'll probably end up doing some in there as well.

(Note: Reform/interfaith ceremony; I am not Jewish. My apologies if I say anything completely clueless, and please tell me if I do. The yichud would be completely optional for us, but we'd like to include it.)

Hi everyone,

I'm just curious. If you are Jewish, did you grow up in a community where there was a strong Jewish presence? I'm from Boston and MH is from NY, so we most definitely grew up having a lot of Jewish friends and feeling that sense of community.

We are currently considering a big move to Austin, TX. What we've seen is that there is not a huge Jewish population. We don't have kids now, but we're hoping soon. And I am not sure I would want my kids to grow up being the only one or among a few Jewish kids.

Just curious what everyone thinks about this. Did anyone here grow up being one of only a few Jewish families? What do you think?

Procession Order

Hi!
Just wondering, what is the most traditional order for the procession?? My FI and I had a premarital counseling session this morning with our Rabbi. At the end I asked him to clarify the procession order since I've seen a few version. The order he told me was very different than what I had written down from various books.
I had- rabbi and cantor, grandparents, groomsmen, best man, groom with parents, bridesmaids, MOH, then me with my parents.

He said it should be grandparents seated first before procession, then rabbi and cantor, groom with parents, best man, groomsmen, MOH, bridesmaids, bride with parents.
I didn't say anything because he had to leave for another appointment ,but that doesn't match any order i've seen before.

Rice Krispy Cake!?

FI and I REALLY wanted to do something different: a rice krispy cake! Now we're having an impossible time finding a kosher kitchen to make one for us! Our caterer said they will do it at an astronomical cost. So now I'm turning to you for advice on kosher bakers in the Ohio area that you think might be able to do it for us?

Saturday ceremony before sundown

Has anybody had any luck finding a Rabbi who will marry you before sundown on a Saturday?

I've booked a Sunday date because I was worried about finding a Rabbi who would marry us before sundown, but of course Sunday evening has its own problems.

So just curious. I'm in the DC area if that helps.

Questioning faith

Have you ever been in a situation where you seriously question faith?

DH's recent accident (crash is a more appropriate term since the other driver willfully did something so dangerous and probably illegal) is causinig me to question everything I once believed. I get angry when I hear that he survived because G-d was with him. If that's the case, why the heck wasn't G-d with him on the road and not just in the operating and recovery room.

I don't believe that G-d caused the accident to happen, or that it is a test of our faith and endurance, but it really does make me question his/her existence.

Can't find a Chuppah in NH - please help - running out of time

My daughter is getting married in April, 2010 and I can't find a Chuppah. I've spent numerous hours on the phone with vendors, florists, party renters, and some don't even know what one is. I found a small lattice one, but it was too small. The wedding will be outdoors so we have the wind to contend with. We aren't handy so I'm afraid to make one. Does anyone know of any vendor in So. My conversion date is drawing near...a week from today (will be about 3 weeks before the wedding!)

I would like to do something nice for my rabbi. He has really gone above and beyond for me...he tutored me one on one b/c there were no conversion classes being offered in the area, he has given me so much advice on many things, and more importantly, has become a friend. He's even going to be one of the beit din, so he'll definitely be rooting for me ;-)

What is appropriate to give? I'm not sure I want to give money to his discretionary fund...we'll be doing that for the wedding in a few weeks.

Hi ladies,

I'm having issues with my FI picking out a ketubah. I have found over a dozen I think would be perfect- but he doesn't like anything. I feel like I have shown him every website I can find, including the bigger companies plus individual artists in Minneapolis/St. Paul (where I'm from and the wedding will be).

We live in Miami, and during winter break (I work at a university) I'm going to drag him to see ketubah's in person. Does anyone know of any S. Florida places to look? I'm going to The Chosen today during lunch and hopefully we'll get up to the Pompano Flea Market (huge Jewish store within it) this weekend. I know there are many places on Miami Beach, but I'm not sure which cater to the conservative market.

Any other website recommendations? Possibly any individual artists I haven't come across yet?

I appreciate any help you can give!!

Our rabbi needs my mother's hebrew name, not so hard right? Well apparently yes it is, lol.

She died when I was 3 and my father doesn't remember, her sister (my aunt doesn't remember) and her uncle is very old and doesn't remember.

I took a picture (w/my camera) of my parents marriage license so I have the hebrew script but without the vowels fi and I can't figure it out. I can just show it to my rabbi but I don't want to seem like a fool.

Can anyone help? I'll email you the picture or I can just post it here.

If you used one of those glasses made for breaking, please let me know how easy it was to break. Did you have trouble with it like 2dBride? I guess I assumed that the Jewish wedding glass was very thin and made to break easily, but is it really no different than any other stemless wine glass?

Some questions about breaking glass

I'm trying to figure out the glass breaking thing. I'd really like both my future husband and me to break it together, rather than just him alone. Did anyone do this or have you seen this done? How do we keep it from looking awkward? Should we have 2 glasses to break or should I put my foot on top of his? The second option seems pretty awkward in my mind. Any advice on this is greatly appreciated.

My other question is on where to buy the glass. Are there any coupons or free shipping offers anywhere? And is it safe to order the Shardz glass through the mail or will it do its breaking business prematurely on its way to me?

how to display ketubah at wedding?

I know this has probably been asked before, but what is the best way to show the ketubah at the reception? I'm not having the ketubah company mount it because I'm not sure what kind of framing/mounting I'm going to want to do.

Is there an easy/inexpensive DIY to do this?

Hi there,

I saw your earlier post on my "gift for the rabbi" thread.

I think conversion processes can take any amount of time. I had a friend whose conversion took only 4 months. I've heard of them taking 2+ years.

My conversion started March of last year (right before passover), and will basically have taken 11 months. I had study sessions with the rabbi twice a month, and once a week for the past six weeks.

I'm not sure what type of conversion you are having though. Mine is reform, and I think if your is conservative/orthodox, it might take longer. Have you started "officially"? If you have been living "Jewish-ly" for the past year, and your wedding is 18 months away, I can't see why you wouldn't be converted in time. But I guess it is a decision up to the rabbi.

Basically my rabbi wanted me to:
-have a grasp on Jewish holidays/festivals and life cycle events
-be aware of history of anti-semitism and effects today
-learn about history of Israel and Israeli relations today
-live a Jewish life (Shabbat, going to shul, being involved in synagogue community)

It is not my, nor my fiancee's practice to keep kosher. I had planned to have kosher style catering at our wedding since that better reflects our beliefs, practices, and sensibilities. However, my fiancee really has his heart set on getting married at his grandfather's orthodox synagogue. At our meeting with the rabbi, he told us that our reception must be kosher. What to do? My first venue choice can't accommodate glatt kosher, so I have to find a new space. Glatt kosher is a huge additional expense (~50% increase over kosher style). And I don't have the option of saving money by cutting my guest list. Going to another synagogue isn't an option. What to do????

I am inviting a great uncle who lives in Israel to my wedding. I have 2 versions of his address provided by different relatives. I can't figure out what the correct format is for sending to Israel. Should everything be ordered to make the USPS happy, or should I make modifications for Israel's postal service? Can somebody help?

Here is the last version of the address as it was e-mailed to me (with the numbers being replaced with asterisks):

Petach Tikva ***** St Gad Machnes */*** LastName FirstName

Is this really the correct order for Israel? It seems kind of backwards, but maybe it's meant to be read right to left... Or should it be:

name

house # street name

city, postal code

country

And what is */***, is it apartment/house? I'm assuming the first 5 digit number is a postal code, right?
