Hey!
I live in NYC and am getting married on August 13 in Sonoma. I have found the South Asian blog on theknot.com very useful and I think it would be fun to get a group of girls together (those getting married and those who have already gotten married) together for tea (coffee). What do people think? I think it could be fun to talk to a group of women who aren't our typical friends about the woes and joys of planning an Indian wedding. I personally could definitely benefit from it. I was raised American and have never been to an Indian wedding. My fiance is American, so we are having a joint ceremony honoring both traditions.

Hello all!

I'm finally picking up my wedding lengha in NYC this weekend and am on to the next challenge: Shoes and Jewelry!

Any suggestions on where to find traditional MALE shoes to go with his outfit in the NYC area?

Also, his family wants to gift to me gold jewelry, and since i'll be there in NYC i thought i would look and maybe buy, do you have any suggestions on where to look? I'll have a car so it doesn't have to be on metro.

I have less than a month until the wedding, i'm so excited!!!

What are you serving (or what did you serve) at your cocktail hour and reception dinner? We're thinking of serving some Indian and non-Indian foods at both the cocktail hour and reception dinner. Half of our guests will be vegetarian so I was wondering how many non-veg foods I should offer. Curious to see what everyone else is serving. Thanks in advance!

I know it's a custom for Guju brides' parents to give them at least one expensive jewelry set. I wanted to know if your parents bought one or if you find the custom dated. I know so many families who gaive their daughters 8,000+ dollar sets and I do not think that is practical. I think if they're going to give me anything, one medium set I can wear with multiple things should work out just fine. I do not think that it is practical in today's age to give people multi-thousand dollar sets. I know it's custom but I think there is a middle ground. For all of you guju brides, did your parents follow through with the custom and if you don't mind, do you mind saying how much they may have spent roughly? I don't think I am the type of girl who thinks a 13 thousand dollar white gold and diamond set with pearls and all that is necessary! I'm not JLo!

Hi ladies! I still need to buy shoes for my reception lengha. I want shoes that are dressy (gold and silver rhinestones) but would also like something comfortable. I want to be able to dance all night without my feet hurting or even having to worry about my feet. Does anyone have any recommendations on which brands make comfy shoes? I would like to stay within a reasonable budget too (maybe like less than $100?)

I went to Edison this past weekend and bought my engagement outfit- it is a peacock blue and teal lengha sari. I could not find any matching jewelry. Does anyone know of websites that I can find a silver necklace set with either: clear, auro borealis or teal colored stones? I have been searching all weekend and cannot find anything even close to the color. The one set I found in Edison cost $340 and I do not want to spend that much

Curly Hair?

KP's post below about going to India and the mention ot curly hair made me wonder how many other ladies on the board have naturally curly hair?

I am Gujarati and have seriously curly hair, I think I get it from my mom's side of the family. The rest of my cousins etc don't...people will sometimes assume I am south Indian because of the curls, hah!

How many other ladies are naturally curly? Do you wish you weren't? For a while growing up I hated my curly hair, but now that I know what it will and won't do, we get along just fine :)

Bride's family giving presents to Groom's family

So my dad was telling me that it is tradition for the bride's family to give presents to everyone in the groom's side of the family. He said typically we have to give saris to all of the ladies and he wasn't sure what to give to the men. I was wondering if any of you gave presents to your groom's side of the family and what did you give? My fiance has so many aunts and uncles and I'm not really sure if we really have to give presents to the extended family, in addition to his immediate family. And then what about the cousins and if they have kids? Also, if you gave saris, how did you get everyone's measurements? Sorry for so many questions but this is the first time I've heard about this tradition. Thanks! :)

How to? House warming invite

Hey Ladies

The hubz and I are thinking about having a condo-warming...we have a guest list that may be too many people for our small place (if everyone DOES in fact show up). (I want to word the invite so it doesn't sound rude....help!)

How would you word the invite (we are using the online invite service evite.com) to include the following:

1) BYOB (We'll have munchies, basic drinks/mixes but I'm not sure how long it will last as this is the first time we are doing something like this on our own)
2) We want to tell people that they can stay for however long they want (but I don't want to come off rude by saying that our place is small)
