Here are my vendor reviews! I'll be leaving for my honeymoon this weekend so I wanted to get these done as soon as possible since others' reviews helped me so much during my planning. My day was perfect. The few small things that didn't go perfectly were so minor that they didn't matter to me at all in the end. You'll notice most of my vendors have excellent 'grades' because I really did have an amazing experience with most of them!

Ceremony: St. Theresa's Church (Trumbull) C

Honestly, the only reason they aren't 'graded' lower is because the Church is gorgeous and the priest who officiated our ceremony was great. They were very difficult to work with from the very beginning when I tried getting cost information and they gave me the run-around. No one I talked to was able to give me answers at first. Eventually the wedding coordinator contacted me. She was responsive when I had questions and I was excited to finally meet her at the rehearsal. At the rehearsal, she wasn't prepared or friendly at all. Everyone agreed that she was rude to us. She also didn't have the Prayers of the Faithful that I had written, so my cousin wasn't able to practice his reading. The morning of the wedding, she e-mailed me to tell me that she printed the reading. My cousin gets up there and it's no where to be found. Not a huge deal in the long run, but I was a little disappointed that the one personal touch I added to the ceremony wasn't used. I also felt bad for my cousin who was really nervous when he was up there since he ended up reading basic prayers that he had never practiced. Overall, not a great experience and they were the biggest cause of stress for me during planning. But I have to admit I'll be happy about the beautiful photos I'll have from there.

Reception Venue: Cascade (Hamden) A+++

Everyone at Cascade was wonderful to work with during the entire planning process (almost 2 years)! The best decision we made was to have our reception at Cascade. I can't thnk of a more amazing venue to have had our wedding (and I looked at plenty!). The ballroom and grounds are beautiful and we've heard nothing but great things from our guests about the ambience and food (I'm still craving the jalapeno poppers and crab cakes we had as appetizers!) Cascade really went above and beyond: They met with us after normal hours several times when the only time we could make it was after work. They also threw in some extra Portuguese appetizers when they found out the majority of our guests were Portuguese. They were always making sure we had everything we needed the night of our wedding. I'm already trying to think of a reason to have another party at Cascade... maybe a future anniversary party?!

Photographers & Videographer: King Vincent Storm A+++

Vinny and Ann-marie were amazing to work with. I haven't received the professional photos yet, but Vinny showed me some shots on his camera throughout the day and I could tell they were beautiful. (I was also extrememly happy with our E-pics). They were wonderful people to spend our wedding day with. They kept us on schedule and got a ton of shots. I wanted a specific shot outside of Cascade as the sun was setting, and they made sure to grab us when the lighting was perfect. Ann-Marie was great about making sure my dress (with its long train) and my veil looked good at all times and organizing everyone. We also did video through them and got a good deal for booking both. I'm very excited to see all the results as I know they will do a fantastic job.

Cake: J-Cakes (North Branford) A+++

I was so impressed with our cake! Even though I came up with the design I wanted, I was still floored when I actually saw the end result. It looked even better than I had imagined and tasted great! They have a huge variety of flavors to choose from. We went with half strawberry shortcake filling and half canolli filling. I had alot of guests tell me that they ate their whole piece of cake when they usually don't eat the cake or only have a bite.

Florist: Candi's Floral Creations (North Branford) A+++

A soon as I met with Candice I connected with her more than any other florist I met with. I LOVED all of my flowers. Candice completely understood my vision and then surpassed it. I changed my mind about small floral details quite a few times and Candice helped me work through my thoughts and kept track of all my changes so that I ended up with exactly what I wanted. They were more beautiful than I imagined and added so much to my day. I had a few people ask me who my florist was because they were so impressed.

DJ: David Rossi (Powerstation Events) A

We loved David. He was very energetic and just a great guy to talk to. He played the songs we asked him to and kept people dancing the whole night... That was a big accomplishment since alot of our guests are not big on dancing at all! We were very happy with him.

Uplighting/Gobo monogram light: Powerstation Events A

Our uplighting and Gobo looked awesome! It definitely added to the overall atmosphere of the room and everyone was really impressed :)

Hair & make-up: Dana Bartone & Co. (Lauren and Amy) A+

Another vendor that surpassed my expectations. I could not have asked for better people than Lauren and Amy to keep my calm the morning of the wedding. I wanted to change a few things from my hair trial so I e-mailed Lauren. She flawlessly created the style I wanted. She made sure every girl was happy with her hair, and everyone looked amazing. I also loved my make-up. Amy was so good at applying the perfect makeup based on people's skin tones. I loved my make-up at the trial but had got a slight tan between then and my wedding day. I didn't even say anything about it, but Amy noticed that I was a bit darker. I could tell that she changed some of the coloring accordingly, and I was beyond thrilled with my wedding day make-up. I'm positive I will never look that beautiful again unless I have Lauren and Amy doll me up again! haha

Transportation: Lindsey Limo A-

We rented a limo for the bridal party (and me before the ceremony) and a town car for me and H (after the ceremony). One of the drivers was excellent. He wasn't intrusive at all but kept checking that we had everything we needed- water, champagne, etc. He missed the entrance to the Church so it took a little while to turn around, but we ended up getting there right on time so it wasn't a big deal at all. The driver that H and I had for our town car though would not stop talking to us about his life. It was fine to a certain point, but H and I were hoping to just have time to talk with each other right after we were married, and it took him a while to get the hint. When we were taking photos at the park in between our ceremony and reception they followed us with a cooler which was nice. They were on time for everything and the limo had a really cool seat:

Overall a good experience and I would recommend them.

Dress & BM Dresses + Alterations : Julie Allen Bridals (Newtown) B+

I got my dress at Julie Allen's because I had the best experience there of all the bridal shops I visited. The consultants are all very helpful and friendly and they have an excellent selection of dresses. I had an issue because they were supposed to order the petite for me (I'm pretty short), but they forgot to write it down and ended up ordering the regular size, which ended up being about a foot too long. My dress had alot of detail on the bottom that would have been compromised if we hemmed the dress that much. They admitted their mistake and ordered the petite version of the dress (while keeping the original dress in the shop to ensure I'd have a dress in case the petite didn't come in on time). Everything worked out in the end but I just wish they would have been more careful with the original order since they were the ones who suggested I should get the petite and I agreed. All of my BMs ordered their dresses from there too and didn't have any problems.

Tuxes: Modern Formals (Southington) A

Overall a great experience and friendly customer service. They made all the guys try on their tuxes when they picked them up, and there was only one small problem with my dad's shirt being way too big. They didn't have the right size in the store so the owner brought over a new shirt to my dad that same night (2 days before the wedding).

Save-the-Date Magnets & Invitations: Stacie at By Invitation Only (Wolcott) A

I didn't trust myself to DIY these. We met Stacie at a bridal show and got a 20% discount off invitations (I think if you just mention the discount, then she'll give it to you)
She has a cute shop in the basement of her house. She was so nice and helpful. She always responded to any questions right away and kept me updated as to when everything was supposed to come in.

http://www.byinvite.invitations.com/

Let me know if you have any specific questions :)

I finally have some down time, so I figured I'd write some reviews for you all. Everything went so smoothly, I have very little negatives to say. I loved all my vendors! Enjoy! :)

Rehearsal Dinner (Vito's by the Park): A
I have to say I was a pretty stress-free bride, but even so, I had wanted slightly more out of the communication from the head planner at the restaurant. However, the day of the rehearsal dinner was fantastic. The food was above and beyond what I expected, and everyone raved about the amount of food served- from the stationary pizza appetizers, to the passed hors d'ouevres, to the family style dinners. We paid a couple more dollars to include lobster macaroni and cheese, and we were not disappointed!! We ended up being able to take extras home, as well! They were so accommodating- we had a video that we wanted to show our bridal party and family, in case they didn't get to the cocktail hour at the wedding, and they were able to set up a projector screen with a couple days notice. So, so good!

Ceremony and Reception (The Hartford Club, Hartford, CT): A++
I cannot say enough good things about The Hartford Club. From the very beginning, the coordinator was a breath of fresh air to deal with. She (Christine) was so on top of everything, from the day I took a tour, to the actual wedding day. She bent over backwards to ensure that everything ran smoothly. The food is phenomenal, and because we got married on a holiday weekend, we had the entire club to ourselves. One of the main reasons we picked the Hartford Club was because of their cigar lounge adjacent to the ballroom, and trust me, it did not disappoint!! The day of the wedding, we made a quick decision to move the wedding inside instead of out, because of the heat and possible thunderstorms approaching. I was not disappointed- the interior provided just the look we were going for!

Photographers (HK Photography): A++
From the first day we met them, Hubert and Alka blew up away with their photos. They were so easy to get along with, and had exactly the same vision as we did. I swear our engagement pictures, and wedding teasers look like they could be in magazines, and they somehow managed to make even my worst pictures look amazing! Seriously, I recommend them to ANYONE. We did not have one bad experience with them- they were extremely organized and had constant communication, right up to the week of the wedding. Check out the wedding teasers to see for yourself: http://blog.hk-photography.com/TravisAndAlana.html

Cake (Creative Cakes By Donna): A+
Donna works with the Hartford Club for their wedding cakes. Though I didn't have too much interaction with Donna, I felt no worries that our cake would turn out wonderful. We had a unique vision (the lyrics of our first dance song were on the cake), which she seemed to fall in love with, and she was so excited about it, we couldn't help but be excited as well! The cake was above my expectations. The one thing I would have changed was using piping instead of ribbon, but either way, the final outcome was beautiful! Because of the design, we ended up paying more than the Hartford Club covered for the cake, but she still gave us a discount, which was extremely sweet. The flavors were amazing; we ended up going with the strawberry shortcake, but were so impressed with all the cake we tasted, we had trouble choosing between that, the red velvet peanut butter, and the raspberry lemon. You can't go wrong with any flavors of Donna's! Our cake also had fondant, which I generally am not a fan of, but her fondant is out of this world!!!

Florist (Just For You Flower Design- Jane): A+
I only met with one florist, and knew instantly that Jane was the one for us. She understood what I was looking for, and made the entire vision come to life. I ended up doing the centerpieces myself, and she put them together at the reception. She was so open to the DIY projects, and was very reasonably priced for what I wanted. I had anemones in my bridal bouquet, and they were just beautiful. I'm Italian, and it was such a nice touch that the anemones were sent straight from Italy! I ended up being able to keep all of the centerpiece vases, as well as the vases at the 'altar.'

DJ (DJae Melee): A++
Loved, loved, loved Jae!! Honestly, he made the wedding perfect! He played all the songs we wanted to hear, and even some we hadn't thought of, but that we loved, of course! We had 2 MOHs and 1 Best Man, and the speeches, dances, and introductions went so smoothly. Especially well-priced, as well!! Seriously, book him!!!

Hair (Hairdresser on Fire, Windsor, CT): A++
William is my usual hairdresser, so of course I went to him for my wedding hair. :) He did an amazing job, and just the interior of the salon made for such awesome pictures! He and the other hairdressers did 7 bridesmaids, 1 bride, and 1 mother of the bride. They were quick, efficient, and true to our requests. All the girls looked beautiful!

Makeup (Face By Julia): A++
I booked Julia about a month before the wedding, and let me tell you, I am so lucky she was available. I had done a makeup trial with her that I found on Groupon, and just fell in love with how natural my look was. She was so meticulous with my makeup that I knew I had to have her do my makeup the day of the wedding. She also did my Novalashes, which still look fabulous!!! I have not used mascara in 3 weeks. ;) She did the makeup for 6 bridesmaids, 1 bride, and 1 mom, and was so scheduled and organized. She used airbrush foundation and my makeup looked flawless the entire day.

Wedding dress and alterations (The White Dress By the Shore, Clinton, CT): A++
What can I say about the staff and store, except WOW. Everything was just perfect. They were super sweet to work with, gave me 3 alterations, and made me so relaxed about the whole dress shopping experience. They were able to match the NY boutique price, which was wonderful, and did SUCH an amazing job with alterations. I also got the birdcage veil from them- it was the only one I found that I truly loved!

Bridesmaids dresses and alterations (Simply Couture, North Haven, CT): A+
This shop was the only one I found that carried the dress designer's style that I wanted. I had all the girls order from here, as well as one pregnant MOH, and they did an awesome job with everything. They took care of contacting all the girls when the dresses came in, and keeping track of who'd ordered and paid. :) Stress-free for sure, and all the girls looked beautiful!

Tuxes (Modern Formals, Middletown, CT): A++
Sal is just a breeze to work with. He is so easy going and informative, and matched my girls look exactly, right down to the exact shade of pocket square that matched the girls' shoes. He made sure everyone tried on before picking up, so we had no problems with sizing!

Photobooth (Funny Faces Photobooth): A++
What a great addition to the wedding! Because we had the entire venue, we had a separate room which housed the photobooth and bar and candy buffet. The photobooth was a HUGE hit, especially with the props. The guests got one copy of the strip of pictures, and they put the extra copy in a guestbook which they signed for us. The results were super cute!!

Cigar Rollers (Battleground Cigars): A++
These girls were amazing!! They rolled so many cigars, flavored as well as regular, had specialty bands made for us with our monogram, and also brought favorite cigars requested by my dad and groom!! They had a gorgeous setup in the cigar lounge, and everyone loved it!!!

I hope I covered everything!! And hopefully I helped some brides-to-be with vendors. ;) Don't hesitate to ask if you have questions!!

My fiancee John and I got engaged about 3 weeks ago after 2 years of dating! I was ecstatic, but then realized that we are embarking on a tremendous journey to have everything organized for a wedding of 250 people in no more then a year. I personally do not like the idea of being engaged for more then a year, it just does not work for me personally.

As we live in West Hartford, John and I started looking in the immediate vicinity at places like The Society Room, the Aquaturf and The Farmington Club. None of the places had the date that we had available, so we were a bit dissapointed. Fortunately, one of our friends mentioned a new venue in the area called Farmington Gardens right on Route 4 in Farmington.

This past weekend John and I scheduled a private tour of the facility and were impressed from the moment we pulled into the driveway! The building has tons of rustic charm and beautiful gardens. We met with Phil the event coordinator/manager and he gave us a tour of the place. We were told it was recently renovated by the new owners who said it was a former garden center. What really caught my eye during the tour was the greenhouse that was converted to a cocktail/reception area. The space is absolutely gorgeous with beautiful garden views and Chinese lanterns! The chandeliers and exposed beams in the main room truly make the space breathtaking!

What sealed the deal for our deposit was the fact that we will be the only party scheduled for our big day, even though it is a Saturday in July!

I highly recommend checking out Farmington Gardens if you are looking for immediate availabilities as they are a newer venue and just started booking dates a few months ago. They are directly across from the driving range on Route 4 in Farmington. Their address is 999 Farmington Avenue and I dealt with Phil!

I look forward to using this board for advice on the planning process!

This is my first knot post! My fiance and I recently got engaged and are planning on getting married June 2014. I have been looking online at venues and am having a hard time finding a place that is both unique and budget friendly. We are thinking around 100 guests, hoping to spend $15,000 or less. I really like rustic, barn type settings, but really anything that is open, interesting could work. I am not a big fan of typical banquet hall venues. We are only looking for reception, as the ceremony will be in a church. Also, it would be easier if it was an all-inclusive place (catering, etc.) rather than just a venue rental since I will be planning from NC, but if I really love the space that is more important. Do you have any suggestions on places to look?

Thanks!

I couldn't be more excited to start planning again with all my DIY projects and gathering advice from other knotties. I made quite a few facebook friends from the last time I was on here planning and it's so great to be able to reach out to other planning brides in CT for tips.
I am getting married June 22, 2013 at Cascade in Hamden. We are having a beachy sandcastle wedding with tiffany blue/seafoam as my main color.
Just picked my bridal party's dresses!
Congratulations to all the brides out there on this board!!
Kaila

I am currently working on making my invitations (which are coming out AWESOME), all the little decorations for the reception, and all the clothing for the wedding party.

Are there any other winter brides out there? And congrats to all you summer brides, I hope everything is coming together perfectly.

Hi all,

I am planning to reuse the lace from my mother's wedding dress as my "something old." I am going to get the florist to wrap the handle of my bouquet in it, which is easy enough. But I wanted to make some sort of bridal headband/headpiece as well, and I really don't trust my DIY skills enough for that :) Do you know of any place that would take the lace and make something beautiful out of it? Should I be looking at tailors or somebody else? Let me know if you have any thoughts about this, thanks!

Hello Everyone!
I just wanted to take a moment to HIGHLY recommend Two Pour Guys bartending available in Connecticut! The reason I recommend them is slightly different then a regular recommendation however. I got engaged in late January and we decided that we wanted to get married this September. Due to the short time-frame, we planned things very fast and got everything taken care of immediately, however, last weekend we realized what we had planned just didn't reflect what we originally wanted-a tiny picnic at my parent's house after the ceremony...not 140 people being served a full 4 course meal...this was an extremely tough decision to come to!

When I called Bob and John of Two Pour Guys and told them our change of plans, they were WONDERFUL and totally understood why we had to downsize! They gave us back the ENTIRE DEPOSIT and were simply amazing...in the future we will ABSOLUTELY use these guys because they are so professional, caring, and fun to work with!

Hire Two Pour Guys for all of your beverage and bartending needs at your wedding in Connecticut!! You will not be disappointed!

Hey ladies-

It looks like I'm going to have to be switching DJs (which I didn't anticipate but the situation can't really be helped.) Did anyone use Zach Dauphinais? I think I've read some decent reviews about him in the past but didn't pay too much attention because we had our DJ already booked. Can anyone let me know anything about him?

TIA :-)

Has anyone here had any experience with Mike Merlin as a DJ? I will be using him, and he seems like a great person, but I was just curious if anyone had used him before. Also his wife, Colleen, is doing my photography, and I like what I've seen of her work.

FH and I have been casually looking for a killer first dance song. We are open to anything,but are trying to find a song that isn't 'done' a lot. Well, we found it!

When we first started dating Katy Perry's song Teenaged Dream was EVERYWHERE. We call it our first song because every night when we would hang out it would come on the radio a million times. And now we just stumbled across this cover: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yAUMU3QQE6w

I am so pumped! We want to surprise everyone at the wedding, so I had to post it her. :)))
