Hello everyone! So I know a few of you were waiting on a review about Food for the Soul since you may have booked without a tasting, but I can assure you we are all in good hands! Tina is great! She is so thorough and goes over every detail possible, even things you wouldn't think of. We started off with 3 appetizers: - Salmon mousse with dill and mac nuts on a crostini AND puff pastry: We really enjoyed this appetizer. It was a perfect starter and the flavors are great. We preferred the mousse in the puff pastry rather than crostini, so we are going with that option - Beef and chicken satays with a spicy peanut sauce: Nothing remarkable, but the meat was cooked perfectly. We decided not to go with the satays since they were so typical, and our entree choices contain meat, so we nixed the appetizer. - Brie en croute with dried fruit served with baguette, crackers, and apples: So this is a brie wheel topped with the dried fruit and baked in phyllo dough. This was our favorite appetizer! I could have honestly eaten this the whole time and not stopped. lol. I don't even really like melted cheese, but this was great. The saltiness of the brie was balanced out by the dried fruit and fresh apples. Very delicious! You could top a cracker, baguette, or apple slice with the melted gooey cheese. So yum! - Garden salad with creamy Asian dressing: I decided to go with the standard salad since the Asian salad was a bit more expensive, but went with their signature Asian dressing rather than the balsamic vinaigrette and boy was I glad I did that! We loved the Asian dressing. So delicious, even my FI asked if they sold it in bottles. lol. The salad consisted of dark greens, shredded carrots, sliced grape tomatoes, and sliced and quartered cucumbers. I like that everything was already sliced, nice touch. The salad comes pre-mixed, but if a guest requets for dressing on the side, it's not a problem. Entrees: - Rosemary chicken with vegetable melange and roasted red potatoes: This was just ok. Nothing special. The chicken was cooked perfectly, but nothing to write home about. I loved the roasted potatoes since I am a huge fan of potatoes. The veggie melange consisted of asparagus, red bell peppers, and thinly sliced carrots. My FI enjoyed these veggies the most and Tina said it is the most popular veggie side. - Encrusted mac nut mahi mahi with lilikoi butter sauce served with lemongrass infused rice and broccoli/onion veggie side: The fish was delicious! So unique and different. I really enjoyed it. Cooked perfectly and the mac nuts were still crunchy, added a nice texture. The lilikoi butter sauce was also very good. A bit sweet for my liking, but still good nonetheless. - Organic filet mignon with pesto garlic mashed potatoes and asparagus: So so so good. The beef was perfectly cooked, medium rare as it should be! The pesto garlic mashed potatoes were my favorite starch. Yum yum! The asparagus I didn't try since I was focused on the meats and starches. The beef was so tender that you could cut it with a fork! No steak knife needed. ;) We are going to do a dual entree for everyone--the mahi mahi and the filet. So, no choices! You get what we want you to eat. lol. But, I don't think anybody will be disappointed. We are also pairing it with the rice and mashed potatoes with the side of the veggie trio melange. So, if you are thinking of planning to book Food for the Soul or if you have, just know that you are in great hands! Tina is great! This is the best "wedding" food we have ever tried and I am so glad we are working with them because I know all of our guests will be just as impressed as we were. If you have any specific questions, let me know! This was a bit general, but ask away!

Hi ladies,
We just got engaged and are planning on a Feb 2013 Maui wedding. Our plan so far is to have the ceremony somewhere like Gannons, Merriman's or Makena Beach Resort and then all go to a luau. My question is, it seems like most luaus start around 5 or 5:30pm. What time would you recommend we have the ceremony? And for anyone who has done a luau reception, did you do a cocktail thing in between the ceremony and luau or anything where you spent more quality time with your guests before the show started? I haven't actually been to a luau before, so I guess I'm not really sure what to expect.

Thanks!

Its been almost a year since my wedding in Maui, July of 2011. Please find below my reviews for the venders we used Wedding Planner - we didnt use anyone. After months of research, we decided not to use one, to save expenses. Plus, it was easier to get rid of the middle man. The only thing we had to depend on was the reveiws we came across. Location - This was a hard one. We orginally were going to go with the Five Palms, however a few months after we put our deposit they up'ed the pricing minimum. Even though we put our deposit before the Minimum was increased, we were still required to meet the new minimum. We decided to cancel. It was a good thing that happened, because it allowed me to stumble upon Merrimans. Unlike Five Palms, I found Merrimans to have a more elegant style. Plus. the food reviews at Five Palms were not the greatest. Merrimans truly deserves a A+++++.We worked with Danielle Kuck, who always got back to us immediatly, unless of course she was working a wedding and even then she would apologize. There was a total of 15 people that attended our wedding. We rented the Cabana. The restaurant has everything one would want in regards to backdrops for photos. They have a grass section that overlooks the ocean, they have black rocks that sit on the ocean, they have a fire pit; we incorporated all of this into our pictures, it was just astonishing. Food was great, drinks were great, atmosphere was definitely great. I highly recommend getting the cabana, you will enjoy the privacy and intimacy it provides. Flowers - We used Dellables. Plain and simple arrangements did not come out the way we requested; appeared to be a rushed job. She deserves a B due to being somewhat cheaper then other florist, and coming through with the flower arrangements. (Remember, I went in this blind hoping no one would run with my money). Music - Ginny Morgan, Harpist. Ginny was kind enough to allow us to book her last min. All day it was sunny, however, when our ceremony began it began to rain. Due to the rain she was unable to play due to her insturment possibly getting destoryed. With Danielles quick thinking, she rushed back into the restuarant to obtain an umbrella to provide her with some shield against the rain. She did play to the best of her capability, we were only able to hear bits and peices, which sounded lovely. She deserves a A++++ as well. She was truly a trooper. Hotel Accomedations - We used VRBO.com. We stayed at the Honua Kai at one of the
Maui Blue Properties locations. They provided everything we needed. They had towels, pans, plates, utensils, boogie boards, washer/dryer, etc. It felt like home away from home. VRBO Listing #230549

Revern - Rev D De Rego was who we used. I would give him an A++. He was so kind, and polite. He brought his daughter, who was just adorable. Hair- Oh man I wish I remember who I used so I can warn all of you to avoid her. She was a disaster. Pictures - Our Photographer was Ian Shepherd. Let me tell you something about Ian, he was a blessing. He is sincerely, the most nicest person one can ever hope to work with. Out of the 12 days we were in Hawaii, the only day it rained on was my wedding day. As I mentioned earlier, the lady who did my hair created a disaster. IT looked as if a child did my hair, my mother ended uptrying to make the best of it. I wish I would have just did it myself. My curly hair, mixed with all the hair spray that lady put on it plus rain just made me want to cry. Ian, witnessed all this and felt so bad, he told me that he would do another photoshoot on another day at no additional charge. So not only did he worked with us on our wedding day for a few hours, we also were lucky enough to head out to Makena Cove on another day for another couple hours. He was so kind, and asked for nothing in return. Knowing that we had a at home wedding reception planned when we got home, he quickly worked on the photos, corrected them and got them back to us within 10 days of shooting.

Mind you I have never met this woman in my life, she is a new gf and she was meeting everyone for the first time anyway. I just smiled and said "oh you are?" What the hell is wrong with ppl? Who does that? She JUST met me, like 5mins prior....Since we were staying with friends that whole weekend, I didn't have the discussion with FI yet, but I needed to vent this anger before I went crazy. Some ppl hear you are getting marriend and just assume they are invited AND they can bring whom ever they want. Last time I checked FI didn't tell me that he invited anyone besides his parents and now his OTHER bff and bff's fiance are saying they are gonna try to go to! WTH folks?! This is not our wedding with FI's friends.
About to nip this and FI in the bud real quick. What was this man thinking?....Do any of you have to worry about stuff like this? please tell me my FI isn't the only one who did something like this......

Hi everyone!

Got hitched over a week ago at Olowalu Plantation Estate on Maui! yahoo!!!! Everything was unbelievably gorgeous, we had the time of our lives! Honeymooned on Kauai, which was amazing! And now settling into our married lives...

I haven't posted much but I did read this board a lot during the planning stages, so just wanted to say THANK YOU for all the great suggestions, ideas and sharing on here.

Since everything is so fresh in my mind (and I am avoiding doing some laundry), I thought I'd share my two cents. The planning got overwhelming, stressful and so time consuimg so I went with a coordinator. Excellent decision and I highly recommend it. I was able to relax, still give plenty of opinions and make plenty of decisions. All in all, we had excellent vendors- it all went really smoothly so almost all A+ across the board! Probably because my coordinator did all the hard work! ;) Feel free to send any questions my way!

Here's a quick recap of the vendors:

*Belle Destination Weddings & Events
A+
We worked with Lena and she is awesome! We clicked from the beginning and she is so worth what we paid for her services. I did look into a few other coordinators and was not impressed and did not "click" with them as I did with Lena.

She is an excellent communicator, quick to respond/easily reached, always on top of my changes, very personable and sweet, shared great ideas with me, helped cut our budget when needed, understood my "wedding visions" and brought them to reality, she even got a stain out of my dress just before I walked down the aisle. The wedding party loved her too.

Gourmet Events Hawaii
C+
We chose not to work with this vendor. They weren't our style , they were definitely working on island time and although they were pleasant and friendly, it just never felt "right" to me when I talked with them.

*Olowalu Plantation Estate
A+ for beauty & space | C for early stages communication
Gorgeous venue!! Exactly what we wanted for our "backyard" wedding in Maui. Like others have said- even more beautiful in person. Interiors are incredibly restored too! I'd live here in a heartbeat.

In the early stages - booking a date, asking questions about contract, etc - they were difficult to get in touch with. C- for service I suppose it was worth it!

*Maui Executive Catering
A+
Food tasted delicious and was presented beautifully! Professional service. Had passed appetizers and the servers were kind enough to go out of their way so I could sample some- without me asking - so nice! Accomodated several different child meal selections and served them earlier than the rest to keep them happy. Accomodated guests with food allergies and a vegan- everyone was happy!
Also, they use fresh, local and mostly organic foods! We live in San Francisco and are spoiled here - the meals were top notch and again- so beautifullly presented! I made a point to eat my entire dinner as I always here that the bride/groom don't eat - we did!

*Garnish Events
A++
AWESOME bar service. We made room in our budget specifcally so we could include this pricey option - but it really helped set the mood we desired and was memorable. Delicious cocktails and gorgeous presentation! We had 3 signature beautiful, tasty cocktails, beer, wine and whiskey. They use all fresh squeezed juices in their cocktails, flower garnishes, those cute paper swirly straws, vintage-esque glassware. (We overbought alcohol and took it back to our friends' condo) . I loved everything and wanted to take home their stuff! Service was excellent too. After the ceremony a server walked quite far with a tray of cocktails to where we were all having family photos taken. He patiently waited for us to finish some photos to serve us. I really want one of the blueberry mojitos right now.

Maui Makeup Artistry
Liz Javelosa
A | Makeup
B | Hair

Liz was great- super sweet, fun and timely. She came to my hotel room to do the Hair and Makeup. Loved the makeup and lashes application. I haven't seen professional photos yet but the ones friends have taken - makeup was great. I didn't want to look overdone and didn't want to look washed out. I think it will be perfect.

The hair was maybe my fault as I didn't show her photos, I just described what I wanted. I described it as beachy waves and wanted it 1/2 pulled back. She seemed to understand - her curls that day was exactly the curl I wanted. I thought it was a pretty hairstyle- many girls would love that look. It didn't look like "me" so I ended up recurling pieces of it and taking down one side so it was a little more relaxed. I would have asked her to redo it- I'm sure she would have been fine with that but we were running a tad late and I wanted to get to the venue - stat!

Bella Blooms
A+
I gave Lena (at Belle Destination) the list of flowers I loved, a photo of my "dream bouquet," photos of tabletop flower arrangements that I wanted (several smaller arrangements of mismatching heights and vessels) and it all was perfect! I had to cut down as my flowers were quite expensive. It was still plentitiful and I could have cut back more. Gorgeous flower arrangements!

Hyatt
A+
Gorgeous hotel, rooms and pools. Upon check-in I gave the clerk a bag of SF chocolates as a treat and told him why were visiting. He was so nice in return too and gave us a few champagne coupons, 2 spa day use coupons and a coupon for an app and bottle of champagne!! Awesome!

Great pool area for kids, separate from the "adult" pool. Fun grotto bar, great pool scene. Umulau food and drinks were great but pricey (probably like everywhere else).

Duke's Restaurant
A+
Had our "rehearsal dinner" here for our 48 guests. My MIL did the planning for this but I think she had great communication with staff. We had a pre-set meal to choose from. Everyone's meals arrived at nearly the same time. It was delicious and beautiful and festive!

Star Noodle
A++
Absolutely delicious meal -possibly the best meal we had the entire trip! A big group of us went the night after the wedding for dinner. We were blown away. It's a must-try!!

DIY
*Linens & Escort Cards
Fabulous Mother-in-law sewed all the napkins!! I chose 6 different fabrics in the same pinks/coral hues. Each table had a different napkin. The escort cards had a circle of their corresponding napkin fabric. Super cute!

*Fabric Ribbons
Matched the napkin fabrics. Easy to do - just cut a slice into the fabric and tear lengthwise. The ribbons were tied to the sides of the chairs lining the aisle and to the back of bride/groom chairs. Approx 48in in length.

*OOT Bags
Again fabulous MIL did these. She printed a program of events and cute labels. Included: maui potato chips, homemade cookies, chocolate mac kisses, POG juice, Maui coffee. Guests appreciated these and were pleasantly surprised. Only issue was trying to "drop" them into guests' rooms. Some hotels weren't open to this so we handed them out at our Welcome Mai Tai party at their condo.

I think that wraps it all up! :) Best of luck to all the brides-to-be!!!

We are only inviting adults to our reception. We do have some single young adult friends that we are inviting as well (because that's what we are currently until we get married). My parents are good friends with a couple that have 3 children so we are inviting the parents. The older 2 children are both in their 20s and friends of mine so they'll be invited as well. Also, the older of the 2 is getting married a week after we are and we are invited so of course she is invited. The youngest is a son, probably about 11 years old. He probably has no interest in attending my wedding and will have to spend all day at a wedding the following week. I don't really know him or vice versa. If we invite him, he will be one of the only kids there. Is it OK not to invite him although we are inviting the entire family?

Hi All,
Just wanting to know how much time and effort you put into trying to find the best flights and accommodation for your guests. I have been spending a bunch of time researching condos and hotels and flights for our guests. There will be about 80 joining us. Some are families who want condos, others are friends who are couples and want to stay in hotels. I am finding it very difficult to arrange and find the best deal/way to book for everyone. Some of my friends have told me that's not my responsibility but I feel like if people are coming such a long way for our wedding the least I could do is provide them with some options. But since everyone wants different types of accommodation and will be coming and staying for different times it is getting frustrating for me. I don't know how much time I should spend on this.

Any tips or experience with this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
