band for reception?

Has anyone seen any local bands that were good? I am looking for a rockabilly kind of sound, with not all their music being covered. Have you heard of the Barrelhouse Rockets from Winterset? I heard they were good... I just want to make sure people don't end up leaving because they don't like the music and arent having a good time.

Also, has anyone ever been to a wedding with a band? I am not sure how to approach it really. Should I have a DJ for the first part of the reception (during dinner, first dance, etc.) and then switch to the band later?

I really want to have a band because my fiance hates rap and I hate hearing the same songs I hear at every wedding. Also, I think if we got a good band, it would be something different and definitely would be more representative of our tastes and personalities.

Hey Ladies,

I would love to do an outside ceremony and then have the reception in a barn or other rustic venue. I have looked at Stonehaven in DeSoto, and plan on checking out Living History Farms and the barn in Johnston. Other than that, any other ideas for doing something kind of classic country around Des Moines?

Since moving to the big city, I thought I would never want to go back to Fairfield. Between family bombardment and seeing everyone I grew up with on every corner (which makes it hard to smoke), I was perfectly content with having the wedding in Kansas City. However, when I actually began to look at venues, they were all upwards of $1000 for two hours!! What!! So, sweet Fairfield, with your $50 wooded venues and your inexpensive lodging, I will be coming back to you. See you in September.

We're putting together the last details before our wedding in less than a month...anyone have any suggestions for a last minute checklist, things or tasks the week of and the day of that they forgot or are afraid they will forget?

I'm thinking things like assigning someone to make sure all of your things made it out of the church, choosing a point person to get all of the gifts home from the reception...anything else?

We hired Tiny Tunes DJ months and months ago. We found out a few months ago that the owner had died, but we were under the impression that we would still be able to use the company. Today we discovered that their phone has been disconnected - so I think we need to find someone new. Goodbye to that deposit!

Does anyone have any recommendations? Our wedding is May 30, so hopefully we will be able to find someone good on short notice.

If you have signed a contract with Tiny Tunes beware - I think they have gone out of business!!

Fine Dining in DesMoines Area

My FH and I are looking for a fine dining restaurant in the Des Moines area for our reception. We are only expecting a dozen people or so, but want a private room. Anyone have suggestions for a place that preferably has white linen covered tables and tie/jacket required?

I've read about 801 Steak and Chop and it's on the short list to look at.

DIY invitations-pocketfold

I posted this on the DIY board but I wasn't sure how often people on local boards check those so I thought I'd post it on here, as you all have been so helpful thusfar.

I am wanting to create my own invitations and I really like the look of the pocketfolds. Does anyone have any templates that would show me how to do this from scratch? I don't want to have to buy pocketfolds from any paper store. I know it takes some cutting and folding, I'm just not sure how to get started. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Also, if anyone knows the best size to make them that will not cost extra postage that would be great too. I know square invitations cost more to mail, so if anyone knows a size that just takes regular postage tha would be very helpful!

I am trying to locate 2 items-

Square glass containers- approx 12x12x2- We will be planting wheat grass in these then setting table assignments on the grass. I have check hobby lobby and didn't find anything. I have found them online but was hoping to find them in the Des Moines area.

Cake stands- I need 3 12" glass or silver cake stands. Again, I have checked hobby lobby as well as Des Moines rental- no luck

Here's the deal- We don't care for cake but would like to have a wedding cake. We will be serving silver dollar sized chocolate chip cookies, small glasses of milk and amazing cream cheese mints. I have a picture of a wedding cake design that I love but REFUSE to spend $5/slice for a Des Moines high profile baker. I would feel different if cake was important to us but it is not. I am looking for someone that will deliver to downtown Des Moines, create a pretty cake that tastes ok (for those that enjoy eating cake) and charge $1-2 per slice. Anyone know of someone that can help me??? If they can do cheese cake as well that would be a major plus. As always thanks for your help-

alcohol-free reception???

Any thoughts on a alcohol free reception? One of the places I like (Iowa Arboretum) says no alcohol, while some winery's charge "corking fees" for anything other than their wine (White Oak Vineyards), and most places require off-duty police officers if you are having alcohol and that can cost upwards of $35/hr with a 4 hr min. I personally could care less if we had alcohol, but my FI has expressed that he thinks it would be "lame" to not have alcohol at the reception. Has anyone else had this delimia? How have you gone about makeing a decision?

Hey Couples! I've been debating places for a honeymoon and figured it'd be best to ask local brides where they went or are going.

So where is your honeymoon spot you decided on and how long will it be for? Then (if you feel comfortable sharing) how much was the total cost and what did it include?

I have a few places picked out but there are a couple issues for each like cost, fiance and I agreeing or not agreeing, and also the fact that we are pretty scared of flying because of a bad experience before.

My FI and I are going to have a punch and cake reception following our wedding at our venue about 45 miles west of Des Moines. My FI is from a back ground in which every wedding has to have a HUGE party complete with DJ and me, I could live without the DJ and dancing. We have both agreed to have the smaller reception with a DJ. Can anyone suggest a DJ that is budget friendly and who doesn't require the job to be 6 hours or more? We are thinking more like 2-3 hours... suggestions?
