I am having an outdoor ceremony and wondered what others have done for music for the ceremony? Has anyone tried a string quartet? If so, any reccomendations?

My fiance and I are getting married next summer but are on a serious budget (we just bought a house so our expenses have been put into that). We also both have HUGE families so our guest list is large just to start with. To save some money is it appropriate to send an email or call those guests who will have to make travel arrangements instead of sending out save the dates, then follow with the formal invitation later? Or should I bypass the save the dates all together and just send invitations early enough for travel arrangements to be made? I don't want to seem corny or tacky, but just the postage cost alone is terrifying!

In the meantime, I have decided to change my last name. For email, I have put my maiden name in parenthesis in my signature line. Now I need to change my voicemessage at work. At suggestions on how to do that?

Looking for a Venue in Harpswell

My fiance and I are looking for a venue in Harpswell, ME for our ceremony and reception. We need something that will accommodate approximately 150 people. We're thinking of setting the date sometime next fall, so ideally our venue will have a large indoor space in case the weather is chilly. We're open to Brunswick and Bath venues as well. Any ideas are greatly appreciated!

Post-Reception Transportation

Hello,

My fiance and I are getting married on M.D.I. next summer and need to find a shuttle to transport guests back to their hotels in Southwest or Bar Harbor at the end of the night. Nothing fancy, maybe just a 15 passenger van to run back and forth for a couple of hours at the end of the night as many of our guests will probably drive their own cars home. The couple of charter companies that I have contacted are trying to sell me something I don't need or have a crazy long minimum of hours that you need to rent for. Any suggestions out there? Thanks!

Ben Krebs just photographed my wedding and we loved him. He is really relaxed, low key and not one of the posey photographers. He just lets you go and captures the moments in a classic way. During our wedding most of the guests didn't even realize he was there. Though we haven't received all our photos yet, just the few he has posted on his website we LOVE. I've so many not-so-great things about david's bridal and I'm nervous for my appointment next weekend. I've been looking at some of the other places people have recommened and I have a question..have any of you heard about hussie's/hussy's hardware in windham? I've had about 3 or 4 people tell me about the amazing experiences they had there but I'm leery of it since it's exactly what it says..a hardware store that happens to have an upstairs with thousands of wedding gowns! haha any thoughts?

Just wanted to take a quick minute and HIGHLY recommend the Hilton Garden Inn in Bangor for your wedding. We had ours there last weekend and we can't say enough good things about them. All of our guests have been raving. The food, the venue, the service all were superb! Such a great day! If anyone has any questions feel free to PM me. Good luck in your planning! Also if you have any other Bangor area questions I can tell you who we used. We planned the wedding from Boston which wasn't easy but overall I was happy with all of our vendors!

All Aboard Trolley

Just a warning to our brides out there...DO NOT BOOK All Aboard Trolley for your wedding transportation needs. I wish I had gone with my gut instinct at the very beginning of my experience with this company! They did not return calls, emails. And now, just 5 DAYS before my wedding they have cancelled our trolley for our wedding!!! I am planning this wedding from Boston and now have to find a way for myself and my bridal party to get to and from the church! I paid All Aboard Trolley in full ($1200!!) and they have done nothing for me. Please, take my warning! This is not an fun last minute glitch to be experiencing!!!!!

Hi gals,

I am living in Portland and am looking for shoes and a slip to wear with my dress. My dress is technically a bridesmaids dress from David's and they were all out of small sized slips. (I am a size 2-4, and their smallest were 8's!) The dress looked much better with a puffy slip (crinoline?) but I dont know where to get one!

Also looking for shoes. Something very comfy for dancing!

And where to get my dress altered. Any recs on where to go or where not to go?

Single Guests Asking for Dates

We sent out all of our invitations a couple of weeks ago and I am excited to get replies back. However, singles guests we invited have starter calling, emailing and texting asking if they can bring guests to the wedding. I have been meticulous in planning the guest list- making sure to get names of all boyfriends/husbands or girlfriend/wives from guests that are in relationships so I find this particularly irksome. FILs have graciously offered to pay for extra guests but I don't want to allow them. I feel as though this is a wedding, not some random party we are throwing, and people should respect that the guest list is limited. I haven't answered anyone yet because I am very stressed out as to what to do. Is it selfish to deny the single guests dates when it isn't a financial issue?

We live in Portland, but we are getting married near Castine (nearly 3 hours up on the coast). Does anyone know of any great local bands up that way - Rockland, Camden, Belfast, Ellsworth, Bangor?!

Or, any recommendations for other Maine/NE bands that may want to make the trip?!

I have had a hard time looking for bands (and yes, we prefer a band to DJ) - overwhelmed and don't know the best way to search/decide. Hints?!

Reception venues in the midcoast area?

Hello girls,

I was originally going to have my wedding reception at the Kennebec Tavern in Bath, Maine, but it looks like it is going to be way too tight of a fit with our guest list. I am having my wedding ceremony at Fort Popham in Phippsburg, does anyone know of a reception venue in the midcoast area that would fit closer to 100 guests?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

So I bought a RD dress online, which turned out to be improperly measured (coupled with the bit of weight I've lost, we're talking... about 6 extra inches in the bust/waist). The seller said they have a smaller size (which I hesitate at, since it was so poorly measured the first time), and have agreed to pay for return shipping, plus shipping of the new dress back to me. Alternatively, I said covering the alteration locally would also be a viable option. The seller agreed, as long as it's "reasonable."

So my question is, what are your local experiences and price range? I heard very good things about Linda's Alterations in Brewer (I live in Bangor) and will be calling tomorrow, but I'd like to get a range of opinions.

I'll be bringing the dress to be altered regardless, because I'm having the bottom half chopped at the knee and using that extra material to make straps/sleeves from (I'm not a strapless girl). So I thought it would be as easy to get it taken in at the same time (since it's likely that even their "smaller" size won't be just right, and I'd have to get it tweaked anyhow).

Wedding Band instead of DJ?!

We almost booked our DJ, and I suddenly had a change of heart and really want a band (FI thinks im crazy!, maybe I am?!) ... I have never even worked with a wedding band, I know nothing about them, I've never seen one in action, but I think it would be great. Does anyone have any good recommendations? Also, they could be $1,000 or they could be $10,000, I have no idea. I feel like it would be a waste of time to sit down and meet with bands if they were closer to the second price-point, but that's what they all want to do. Help!?
